The tab was picked up by the company A-Affordable Bail Bonds of Brainerd.

This is different than the Minnesota Freedom Fund. That is a non-profit organization that pays bail for low-income people who can't afford it and pays the immigration bonds for immigrants. A-Affordable Bail Bonds isn't charity, it's a business. Evidently you can make money as a bond dealer in a similar way to a loan agency. What a country we live in!
The agency guarantees your bail, but will charge a non-refundable fee. The standard rate seems to be 10% and up of what the bail is set at. Bail money is meant to be just returned to you if you show up in court like you're supposed to, in this case though the bail bond company will taking a cut out of the money.
If Chauvin meets all the conditions of his bond then they don't lose anything, they only make money off of the situation. If he runs though it's a business loss for them. I read of A-Affordable Bail Bonds nation-wide website that they seize collateral you placed with them if you break the agreement.

Also bond companies from what I read really don't like it if you try to dodge, because then that means they're the ones stuck paying the court, and some of them send bounty hunters out to track you down to make sure you're in the defendant's chair if the time comes. That way they don't lose their investment.
I'm glad that nobody actually donated to help this man. I also have a little more confidence that Chauvin will be showing up to stand trial even if he has to be hog-tied.
