Golden Oldies

Do you ever watch black and white movies or other classic films from generations ago? Are there any legendary actors that you admire for their great talent or beautiful and handsome faces that you can't forget? Maybe you like timeless songs and voices from the olden days. If so tell us about your favorites here.

I really like Judy Garland. She was an expressive actress and has one of the most powerful and soulful voices ever. I never tire of watching her luminous charm in the Wizard of Oz. The movie is over 80 years old and as beautiful as ever, one of my all-time favorite movies.

Other favorite classic movies of mine include 1965's Doctor Zhivago starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, and a black and white French adaptation of Beauty and the Beast directed by Jean Cocteau. The movie my Fair Lady with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison is another one I love, and my current avatar comes from it. The 1947 movie The Red Shoes. I really enjoy the films of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa too. I like seeing old mystery television series as well like Twilight Zones with Rod Serling.

I'm starting to get into Frank Sinatra. I was on vacation once and went to the Hollywood wax museum with family and there was recording playing of Frank singing My Way. His voice blew me away.

Sarah Vaughan is another legendary singer I have always loved, she's really sassy--which was her nickname, and has all this stage presence and this sexy, confident contralto and amazing vocal range. She just sparkles.

Tell me I'm not the only one out there who looks back at entertainment of the past sometimes with intrigue?

Psycho and The Birds are two of the greatest horror movies ever made and you can't change my mind. That being said, it's fairly uncommon for me to watch movies from before the 1970s and the older the movie is, the less likely I've seen it or have any huge desire to. There is a handful of old black and white movies I'm interested in seeing maybe, but they aren't high on my list of priorities.

It's much more likely you'd catch me listening to older music than watching older movies. I'm not a super-fan or anything, but every now and then I'll listen to something from someone like Nina Simone, Etta James or a few others in various genres. Again though, the majority of my favourite artists tend to be from the 90s onward.

Classic Don Bluth animation, man. That was the stuff of legends..
