Good Anti Virus downloads?

    Does anyone know of any good Virus Protection software? Most of mine have expired so I want to get some more just to be on the safe side.

    • Depends on what you can afford or if you are looking for something free.

    Free: AVG. I used it and it didn't let me down.

    Buying: Norton 360 3rd edition. I hate the other 360 versions, but this one has been flawless. Hasn't let me down once and its other useful features make it my recommendation so far.

    • AVG really can't compare to Microsoft Security Essentials, in my opinion. But that's just my experience. Maybe AVG 9.0 is better than AVG 8.5 was. I do know that MSE uses Windows Update to update, though. And it's lighter on resources than most of the free AVs out there.

    Is Microsoft Security Essentials free? Or does it cost money?

    @My friend downloaded 8 different Virus Protection and his computer runs really fast.

    It's free to download. Microsoft has apparently seen it as in their best interests to create a competent free antivirus program. It also has a built in anti-spyware component, if I recall correctly, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

    Free ones don't conflict quite so much, but they still conflict and bog it down somewhat. That friend of yours must have a much newer computer than you if you think it runs really fast.

    • Well I use spyware doctor, I apparently got it when it was free and its pretty good keeping virus's off my computer. But now you have to pay for it to actually remove the virus's off your computer :/

    Just one question first, how do you know if you have Windows XP or not? I'm pretty sure i have it but I want to make sure. :x

    On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: winver.

    I'd like to sort of-but-not really commandeer this thread for a moment.

    My mother managed to acquire a virus or something that opens IE and creates a bunch of tabs linking to the Viagra website, as well as making her profile slow down to snail speed. =/ Our McAfee subscription ran out so she hopped over to my profile, renewed it and got the exe file the site gave to her. It wouldn't install properly, and so I cancelled it from Task Manager. Now I can't find the thing. I was considering getting a free antivirus just to oust whatever we have now, and sort everything out later.

    Malfunction, need input.

    I agree with donavannj. I've been using all the free versions of Avira AntiVir, AVG and avast! and they were giving me annoying false positives, among other things. I'll quote myself:

    It's close to the same thing, at least in my eyes. Oh well, it's fine. We got it all sorted out.

    First of all, all anti-virus programs have the same problem; they may give false messages or miss viruses. That's just something unavoidable. What IS important though is WHICH viruses the program misses.

    That said, in my opinion Avira Antivir is one of the best free anti-virus. It has protected my pc so far from viruses.

    As for the best paid anti-virus, I would go to Windows Live One Care. Sure, it's expensive, but in my experience it detects almost anything unusual on your pc. Sure, this means it's very sensitive, but thus far it has found most viruses, including though ones that not any other anti-virus could find.
