Just started playing Diamond the other day, just gotten to the 3rd gym and I realised I have no grass pokemon!

Where can I go catch at least one?

catch a budew at route 204. it already knows grass moves. once it evolves to roselia (for me around lv. 24) move tutor for some poison moves, or use tms. if you don't, its going to be hell using it in battle sometimes.

Level (except gaining 1 more level) has nothing to do with Budew's evolution, it has to be very happy and you have to level it up 1 level during the day time.

    You didn't pick Turtwig?
Then if you don't want to raise a Grass type, (Budew might be a little underleveled at this point if you don't want to train) just teach Grass Knot to whichever starter you picked. Both Empoleon and Infernape can learn Grass Knot IIRC.

    Nope, I started with Chimchar!

You can't really get any good grass types unless you trade for them. Budew is your best bet but if you've trained Chimchar enough, you'll easily be able to own all 8 gyms with Infernape. I usually get them to evolve into their second form before the first Gym Leader.

Do you mean the third gym (at Veilstone) or the fourth gym (at Pastoria)? I don't see why you need any Grass type Pokemon in the third gym...

    I don't need them, I just want a grass type! :)

People here are really underrating the Budew/Roselia/Roserade line... it rocks, IMO, at least once you get Roserade.

Roserade has high Sp. Attack, and it learns Toxic Spikes which can be useful in the E4.

Chimchar is the best choice of starter pokemon as it and it's evos are the only 4th gen pokemon in the sinnoh dex unless you can stand having a Ponyta (Heatran and Magmortar is when you get the national dex).

    What about Carnivine?

Teach one of your Pokemon Grass Knot and call it a day.

Yeah, if you have a Piplup teach it Grass Knot, or go on the GTS to find a Grass Pokemon. It shouldn't be too hard. But Budew is really your only choice right now.

Why would you give him 3 grass moves? You don't really even need a grass type. If you want one then catch budew and evolve it into Roselia and Roserade.

Carnivine is more fail than Roserade. I use Roserade because I want to, even still, it sags behind in a team.
