Guide to competitive pokemon needed

So I went and bought DS Lite after playing gen3 pokemon on my phone via emulator. I am keen to start competitive pokemon and have done research on topic.
My questions right now are following.
How to battle other trainers?
Is gen 3,4,5 wifi battles still a thing?
What gen to start with?
Some other tips? I know about EVs IVs etc but everything that could be of use will be much appreciated.

Starting is hard as I dont know where to start.

Hey stanttu,
Unfortunatel gen 4 and 5 wifi battles no longer exist. Wifi was discontinued for thise games.
If you want to start battlling conpetitively I'd suggest 6th gen and doing so in a battle simulator, Pokémon Showdown.

That's very encompassing for a wide variety of aspects you'll need to familiarize yourself with if you aim to git gud.

Best advice I can give is make sure you actually learn things instead of just plug'n'chugging what others tell you. Understand what the fuck is actually going on, and you'll be a lot better off for it.
