Hi everyone, how's it going? It's been a long time since I've been on a forum like this. I used to be a part of a few forums way back in the day, they were vBulletin forums, all before the internet changed so much, and I've missed communities like this.

It's been about a year since I was able to start playing and then beat Legends Arceus, which I loved, and I'm wanting to go back this year and start playing the rest of the switch games which are the only ones I haven't played yet. It's been a rough time for me lately, and Pokemon has always been good at kind of grounding me throughout my life, since I've got memory. I always end up coming back to it one way or the other, thankfully. I lurked around and used the site plenty to look at hacks like Unbound, but this is my first time joining the forum proper.

I love videogames in general and like I said I've been playing Pokemon since I've got memory. I used to love the spinoffs. Explorers of Sky used to be my favorite game at one point.

Anyways, yeah I'm hoping I can meet and talk with all the nice people here and be part of a nice community. It's good to meet you guys!

Hello and welcome (officially) to PokeCommunity!

As far as I know the pokémon games have this charm that makes us always come back to playing it again.

Do you have a favorite Pokémon generation?
If we're talking generations as a whole and not individual games, it'd have to be Gen IV for me, I think. From what I remember, I had been playing Pokemon since Gen II and been a fan since Gen III, but somewhere around Gen IV was the definite moment when I saw the magic inherent in the franchise and what solidified my love for it. There's so much about that generation that made it the unforgettable peak for me. The Gold & Silver remakes, all the spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon and Ranger getting several games where they explored new creative venues and polished what Gen III had introduced a few years ago, all the way back to even the prerelease of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl on the then new Nintendo DS, seeing low quality CoroCoro scans of Grotle and Cranidos. That was also when I became active in a lot of the internet communities and was able to see the love of the games shared by other people, so to me the franchise felt more "alive" than it ever has been since.

Gen VI and Gen V are close seconds as well. Gen VI had more potential it could have lived up to sadly, and even though Gen V started off rough for me, towards its end it was becoming something really special too. The Pokemon roster, B2W2 and Pokemon Conquest alone are enough to elevate it for me.

I do like every generation a lot though. What is your favorite gen?

My favorite generation is Gen 5, gen 4 being very close, and being the second favorite

That's great. Gen V was a peak for the franchise in a lot of ways. If they had continued pushing the spinoffs like they had during Gen III and IV it may have been my absolute favorite as well. Have you ever played Pokemon Conquest? I'm due for a replay one of these days myself.

Hello SouthernLabrax, and welcome to the forums!
    PokéCommunity's number one fact-checker here!
I can relate! I have been playing since Red, and never went too far from Pokémon since!
Besides ROM hacks, have you tried some fan games ?
How about meeting and talking with a Pokémon ? ^^
It is good to meet you too!

Never played pokémon conquest, actually, never even saw anything related to it 😅😅
It's really fun if you like tactic or strategy games like Fire Emblem. Has lots and lots of content as well.

Hi! I've tried a little bit of Uranium but didn't get too far, and when I was younger I used to play a lot of fan games, but since that was so long ago they were not nearly as advanced as today, I don't remember much of those. Lately I found out about Pokemon Reminiscencia and a whole other bunch of fan games that look really great and extremely polished so I've been wanting to play those, but I think I should hold off until I finished playing the official games I've got left. There's also Mystery Dungeon DX and New Pokemon Snap that I want to play and like I said I want to go back to some of the old spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon which I haven't played in forever. So I think I've got my plate full with that for the moment.

Would you recommend any particular fangame or game in general?

About talking with a Pokemon, that's what got me into Mystery Dungeon back in the day. I was really young and getting ready to move out of the franchise around Gen III and that's when somebody I met on the internet told me about these games where you played as a Pokemon and could speak with other Pokemon. So I got instantly into it and that allowed me to get even more into the franchise until Gen IV came around and became the peak like I've said.

I can recommend Zeta / Omicron, Solar Light - Lunar Dark, Insurgence (my top favourite fan game!). Then there is also, if you are into top level battles and challenges, Reborn (also with hairpulling puzzles) and Desolation (not finished yet but already dozens of hours of playing)!

Happy to know you enjoyed it! I sure wish there would be regular Pokémon with roles in the main games!
It is one like that, in a fan game, who inspired me and made me join PokéCommunity years ago! A Gardevoir in the Reborn fan game!

I watched a playthrough of Insurgence back when it first fully came out and it was really really cool. Even though I wasn't playing it myself I do remember it feeling like a journey. Don't know why I didn't play it then, but out of every fan game I've seen played that one probably made the biggest impression on me. I vaguely remember the Gardevoir you're talking about. Once I'm done playing all the official games I've got left, I'll definitely check that one out!

Also, if you haven't played the first Mystery Dungeon, Rescue Team Red or Blue, or its remake, Rescue Team DX, I recommend you check it out, there's a Gardevoir in that game too that plays a really important role and is a really cool character with a superb story line.

I sure felt the same! A great journey ending with a soft, relaxing theme in the Oort Cloud, where the last Legendary Pokémon to catch awaited!

Certainly my favourite character in every fan game! In Desolation, the next game from the same ones who made Reborn, there is also one. I am eager to see what role she will have in the next parts of the story!

I did play MD! That story was great!
But on the gameplay, personally, the alike halls and rooms, the hunger system, the traps and the 99 stairs dungeons don't appeal to me. I would love one with maps like those of the main games!

Yeah, the roguelike gameplay is not for everyone, for sure. Me personally I love it, but I understand why people are put off by it. Thankfully I believe a lot of fan game creators of the community have been inspired by stuff like the story and depth of that game when creating their own main series based games.

I hope at some point the franchise starts making creative detours like that with the same frequency as they used to, outside of phone games. Maybe with the Switch 2, who knows. Here's hoping.

Hello there SouthernLabrax, and welcome to the PC!

If you're looking to chat more with the rest of the community, the Off Topic and Forum Games sections are really good areas to meet others! And if you like Pokemon themed games, Pokemon Trivia is another section to take a look at too!

What are some of your favorite Pokemon?

I second that! We need new concepts with regular Pokémon doing more than using moves and being caught!
Yeah, spinoffs used to fill that niche for me back in the day. Nowadays it seems they're focusing on mobile games however. The last proper spinoff I remember is Pokken Tournament DX, but I haven't been able to play that one.

Hi! Thank you for the welcome. I'll be checking those sections out then, thanks!

My favorites tend to lean towards Gen III and IV, since I suppose those are the ones I had the most time to make memories and get attached to. Although that notwithstanding, I also really like the newer designs from the games I haven't played yet, just looking at the visuals. I also tend to favor Psychic-types and fossil Pokemon. Some of my favorites are Girafarig, Xatu, Rampardos, Bastiodon and Medicham, but my list gets bigger and bigger the more I think about it.

    What are you guys' favorites?

Cool to hear, I hope you're able to make lots of forum pals!

Xatu... I had one I nicknamed CronoTwitter lmao. What are some of the Pokemon you're looking to try out in the newer games? And speaking of fossil 'mons, the ones from Gen 8, while looking a little goofy, some of my farorites among that catagory, though my absolute favorite fossil 'mon is Tyrantrum. (and that's one I've actually gone through a playthrough of X with)

Some of mine are Absol, Weavile, Meowscarada, Luxray, Gardevoir, Mimikyu, Tyrantrum... I've got a fair few lol, the full list is in my 'about me' section on my profile if you're curious.

For me, that would be Charizard (always been number one!), Gardevoir (who would have guessed ? ^^), then, in no particular order, Rayquaza, Salamence, Milotic, Tyrantrum, Swampert, Serperior, Tyranitar!

Thank you, I hope so as well.

Tyrantrum is one of my favorites alongside the other Gen IV and VI fossils. The Gen VIII fossils look goofy but it's such a weird concept I'm definitely interested in using one when I play Sword and Shield. Other than that, Farigiraf is the one I want to try the most out of the latest two regions I haven't played. I've been a huge fan of Girafarig since I've got memory playing Pokemon Crystal and it finally getting an evolution in Gen IX is something that's got me really excited to play those games. Gen IX Pokemon in general just look so cool, their design sensibilities really remind me of Gen II for some reason. I think in time the Gen IX designs could become my favorites in the franchise. I won't be able to tell for sure until I play Scarlet and Violet, but it feels that way just looking at the Pokemon.

Other than that, I'd like to use Barraskewda for Gen VIII and Veluza for Gen IX. I tend to like the standard fish Pokemon like Lumineon that may be a little understated in the games, so I always try to use them, and have a lot of fun doing so. And at least one Paradox Pokemon from Scarlet, the ones that look like they're from the past, if I choose to play that one. I really like all those designs.

I've actually gotten a taste of Gen VIII already with Legends Arceus and the few new Pokemon that game introduced. Overqwil was the one I used that stood out to me because I also always really liked Qwilfish, plus it reminded me of Glalie because of its round shape, which is another one of my favorites. It was part of my main team that I leveled all the way to level 100. All of this about a year ago or so. In time the experience I had with Legend Arceus will probably turn into a fond memory in the same way the older games have and Overqwil may end up becoming one of my favorites as well. It's already pretty close honestly.

I'll give the about me section a check, for sure! I also noticed that picture of Stocke in your signature. I didn't recognize it at first but I thought it was familiar, and then I remembered Radiant Historia. That used to be one of my favorite games back when I played it in the DS, I used to think it was one of the best games ever, but sadly I could never finish it back then. That's another one I need to get to.

For me, that would be Charizard (always been number one!), Gardevoir (who would have guessed ? ^^), then, in no particular order, Rayquaza, Salamence, Milotic, Tyrantrum, Swampert, Serperior, Tyranitar!
Really cool choices. Charizard and Gardevoir really became Pokemon I liked when Gen VI introduced Mega Charizard Y and Mega Gardevoir, respectively. I'm glad there seem to be a bunch of fans of Tyrantrum as well here! I always thought that it was very underrated for being a giant fossil T-rex.

    Hello!
Legends Arceus is a nice game, though I personally feel like the research tasks are too dang grindy... if you're going for a Perfect Dex that is.... which is what I decided to go for when I started playing it and have yet to finish it... though SV did distract me for a long time due to shiny hunting.

If you're going to play the Switch Pokemon games, any intent of picking up New Pokemon Snap ?
It's got some nice scenes you can unlock of interactions with Pokemon to take photos of. It's a change of pace from the normal mainline games.
