[Intro] Hello everyone, nice to meet you

Tyrantrum is one of my favorites alongside the other Gen IV and VI fossils. The Gen VIII fossils look goofy but it's such a weird concept I'm definitely interested in using one when I play Sword and Shield. Other than that, Farigiraf is the one I want to try the most out of the latest two regions I haven't played. I've been a huge fan of Girafarig since I've got memory playing Pokemon Crystal and it finally getting an evolution in Gen IX is something that's got me really excited to play those games. Gen IX Pokemon in general just look so cool, their design sensibilities really remind me of Gen II for some reason. I think in time the Gen IX designs could become my favorites in the franchise. I won't be able to tell for sure until I play Scarlet and Violet, but it feels that way just looking at the Pokemon.

Other than that, I'd like to use Barraskewda for Gen VIII and Veluza for Gen IX. I tend to like the standard fish Pokemon like Lumineon that may be a little understated in the games, so I always try to use them, and have a lot of fun doing so. And at least one Paradox Pokemon from Scarlet, the ones that look like they're from the past, if I choose to play that one. I really like all those designs.

I've actually gotten a taste of Gen VIII already with Legends Arceus and the few new Pokemon that game introduced. Overqwil was the one I used that stood out to me because I also always really liked Qwilfish, plus it reminded me of Glalie because of its round shape, which is another one of my favorites. It was part of my main team that I leveled all the way to level 100. All of this about a year ago or so. In time the experience I had with Legend Arceus will probably turn into a fond memory in the same way the older games have and Overqwil may end up becoming one of my favorites as well. It's already pretty close honestly.

I'll give the about me section a check, for sure! I also noticed that picture of Stocke in your signature. I didn't recognize it at first but I thought it was familiar, and then I remembered Radiant Historia. That used to be one of my favorite games back when I played it in the DS, I used to think it was one of the best games ever, but sadly I could never finish it back then. That's another one I need to get to.

I know this is a looooong shot, but I've gotta ask anyway. Have you ever even heard of the game "Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine"? Cause I named the Gen 8 fossil 'mons after some of the characters from that and doing so made them extra special to me because of it lol.
There are a lot of Gen 9 Pokemon I fancy as well, and it even has my favorite all time starter Meowscarada. Gen 9 as a whole was... Alright. But it is one of the easiest games to shiny hunt in, and as a hunter, that's been really good for me! I hope they're able to meet your hopes for them when you get the chance to play!

Cool to see someone interested in the simpler fish Pokemon! Not something I see often lol. Regardless of which game you pick, I can help you out with the other game's exclusives if you'd like. (it certainly woundn't be the first time I've helped someone out with exclusives trades)

I've yet to play L-A, as I'm waiting to finish my playthrough of SP before I move on from it, but I'm really looking forward to trying it out eventually.
It was really neat to see Pokemon like Qwilfish finally get some evolutions of their own! (even if it was annoying to find out I'd have to see Stantler yet again... >.>) Did you give that Overqwil a nickname by chance?

Yo, always nice to see another Radiant Historia fan! Game's super underrated in my opinion lol. If you get the chance, I'd recommend trying out the remaster they made for the 3DS, mainly for the ending, really. (one of my favorites in any RPG game ever, actually) Regardless of that, though, I hope you do get the chance to play it 'till the end someday, cause it's fantastic.

Hi everyone, how's it going? It's been a long time since I've been on a forum like this. I used to be a part of a few forums way back in the day, they were vBulletin forums, all before the internet changed so much, and I've missed communities like this.

It's been about a year since I was able to start playing and then beat Legends Arceus, which I loved, and I'm wanting to go back this year and start playing the rest of the switch games which are the only ones I haven't played yet. It's been a rough time for me lately, and Pokemon has always been good at kind of grounding me throughout my life, since I've got memory. I always end up coming back to it one way or the other, thankfully. I lurked around and used the site plenty to look at hacks like Unbound, but this is my first time joining the forum proper.

I love videogames in general and like I said I've been playing Pokemon since I've got memory. I used to love the spinoffs. Explorers of Sky used to be my favorite game at one point.

Anyways, yeah I'm hoping I can meet and talk with all the nice people here and be part of a nice community. It's good to meet you guys!
What's up! I'm fairly new to this forum as well. Nice to meet you. What would you say is your favorite gen of Pokémon games?

My favorites are Joltik, Galvantula, Kanghaskan, Nidoking... And the list goes on... Normally I prefer Poison, Steel and Bug types, but Fairy and Water are always present in my teams too
Great choices. Steel and Water are also some of my favorite types. Fairy is high up there as well, but even though it came years ago by now, it still feels too new for me for some reason. I guess once I play the Gen VIII and Gen IX Switch games I will get more used to it.
Hello!
Legends Arceus is a nice game, though I personally feel like the research tasks are too dang grindy... if you're going for a Perfect Dex that is.... which is what I decided to go for when I started playing it and have yet to finish it... though SV did distract me for a long time due to shiny hunting.

If you're going to play the Switch Pokemon games, any intent of picking up New Pokemon Snap ?
It's got some nice scenes you can unlock of interactions with Pokemon to take photos of. It's a change of pace from the normal mainline games.
Yeah the research tasks end up being pretty repetitive even if you want to get research level 10 on every Pokemon, though since it had been a long time since I had last played a new Pokemon game when I played Legends Arceus, and I liked the world and gameplay so much I actually didn't mind so much, it felt like an excuse to keep playing a little longer before the end. I actually ended up grinding research level 10 on every Pokemon before battling the final boss of the post game, because I thought I needed to do so to get Arceus, I didn't realize you just needed to catch them. I ended up being close to level 100 if not there with most of my main team by that point. Like I said though, it's all good, and I did get the shiny charm for it which was a nice surprise.

I'm assuming a perfect dex means every task goal completed for every Pokemon, and that does sound like an ordeal. Good luck with it. That's the kind of stuff that leads to burnout if you're trying to force yourself to do it, so it's good you're pacing yourself with other games and such.

I'm definitely going to be trying New Pokemon Snap, yes! I played the original Nintendo 64 one back when I was a kid and it was a classic. Really charming, laidback game. I hope the new one has that same vibe. I may even try it before starting with the main series again, as a way to ease me back into the franchise.

I am aware of the old LucasArts Indiana Jones games, but I don't think I ever played that one specifically, sadly. I did play other LucasArts games during my childhood like Day of the Tentacle and Maniac Mansion, and I remember playing Indiana Jones' Desktop Adventures way back in the day. That game was really primitive but it was so fun to go through the randomized worlds it created. It may have been one of the first games I've ever played period. Really good memories with all of those games. It was a long shot but worth asking anyways, it reminded me of those great games. Have you played any of those as well?

Meowscarada is my favorite of the Gen IX starters as well. Even though I also like the other two a lot from their design alone. I loved shiny hunting in Legends Arceus, it actually made me interested in looking into shiny hunting in older games, like using the Poke Radar in Platinum and XY, which I had always known but never really cared that much about. It turns out is a lot easier and more fun that I was making it out to be all the way back when I first found out about it. Between you and ReKoil both mentioning shiny hunting as a point of interest for SV, I'm excited to hear it seems to be really fun, maybe even more so than in Legends Arceus!

I hope you get to enjoy LA as much as I did once you play it. As a big fan of Platinum who hadn't played a new Pokemon game after the 3DS, I went into it pretty skeptical and even though I don't know if I would put it amongst the best games in the franchise I do think it's a really fun, charming experience which at moments made me feel the same way I felt playing Platinum all those years back. It was rare, but the fact it managed to do so at all was something incredible. I'm also open to chat if you get any doubts or questions during your playthrough, of course.

I do relate to naming Pokemon after games you love and that making the Pokemon feel extra special. Some of my favorite Pokemon come from memories of me doing that exact same thing while replaying Pokemon Platinum. I actually tend to name Pokemon like that more often than not! I do it a lot with characters from other RPG games, since Pokemon is also an RPG, it tends to remind me of why I love both the game I'm referencing at the time and the Pokemon game I'm playing, as well as the Pokemon I chose the nickname for.

As for the Overqwil I used in that playthrough, yes. I did give it a nickname. I nicknamed a lot of Pokemon actually. I always nickname the ones I believe are going to be part of my main team. Overqwil in particular I named Jagos, after a funny youtube video by Justin Kuritzkes. If you don't know that channel, it's basically a guy that uses webcam filters and acts out ridiculous scenarios. He's mainly known for the Potion Seller video that was popular a few years back. In one of those videos called "Summoning" he uses a filter for a character named Jagos that made his face remind me of Overqwil's face, so I named mine that because I thought it was pretty funny. I recommend you watch if you want and tell me if you notice the similarity, it's pretty hilarious.

Other nicknames from my team of that game include the starter I chose, Cyndaquil, which evolved into Hisuian Typhlosion, which I named "Chris", after a character from the King of Fighters franchise of games that uses purple flames, and in that same vein I used a Torterra, which has been my choice of starter for Gen IV all the way since I first played it, so it felt fitting to use one in this Platinum inspired game, and I named him "Yashiro", after another character from King of Fighters that belongs to the same team as Chris and uses Earth as his element.

Yes, Radiant Historia is really underrated. It used to be one of my favorite games when I was younger even though I never got to beat it. That kinda speaks to how good it was to me. It's on the top of my list of games I have to beat right after the Pokemon games. I'll definitely start with the 3DS version. I remember being so hyped when they announced that one at one of the last 3DS focused directs. Atlus really did a lot of good work with that console
What's up! I'm fairly new to this forum as well. Nice to meet you. What would you say is your favorite gen of Pokémon games?
Hey there! Glad to meet you as well. And welcome! Hope you and me both have a great time in these forums. My favorite generation overall is Gen IV, because of a lot of factors. Spinoff games, mainline games, timing when it came to my life, , etc. etc. I think every generation has something to love as well though, which is why I'm excited to play Sword and Shield and then Scarlet and Violet later this year. What is your favorite generation?

You'll love sword and shield, very underrated imo. I totally agree, I've played every gen of games and can say that every game has its own charm for sure. My favorite has gotta be gen 6. Probably still to this day the most ambitious shake up of the series with everything they introduced and the most ambitious remakes as well. I love the jump to 3D and everything they introduced! I wish Kalos got a Z version though. But even with that gen 6 is still amazing

Really cool you know about those in general, even if you aren't familiar with Infernal Machine! In fact, I've never even heard of those others you mentioned, since IF was released on both PC and the Nintendo 64, and the 64 version is the one I played. (and is the better of the two in some aspects from my time looking into the PC version, though it doesn't have some of the animations the PC version does) I grew up with Episode 1 Racer, Jedi Power Battles, Shadows of the Empire, and other stuff like that lol.

I don't mind the other starters either, in fact, I've done a few playthroughs of Scarlet to get a few extra Koraidons for people and had a chance to use them all. They're solid in battle and in design, just something about my little showmancat gives it a special place in my heart lol.
The hunting in Gen 9 from what I know can give much better odds, but it lacks a lot of the QoL of hunting in L-A, such as the sound that happens when you find one around, and they don't sparkle at all until you run into them. So it becomes more of a 'is that a shiny?' when dealing with Pokemon who's colors remain very similar between both shiny and non-shiny versions. I can't say if it's more fun or not, but I went from having only a very select few over multiple Gen games to having multiple boxes full just in Violet lol, so it's at least the most profitable if quantity is your main goal lol.

I most likely will. I was pretty sure there was going to be a story path in Gen 9 revolving around catching Pokemon and was very disappointed when I found out there wasn't, as that's my personal favorite aspect of the series. So playing a game mainly about being a researcher catching and studying Pokemon sounds exactly like my cup of tea lol.
In the event we're still chatting by the time I finally get to playing it, I'd be more than happy to talk to you about my playthrough as I go through the game.

I've made it a personal goal of mine to nickname every Pokemon (eventually lol) cause it helps me remember them better than just leaving the names default, and it also helps me bond with my teammates when I do playthroughs. Though I pull name inspirations from pretty much anything as long as it comes to me while thinking about it.

I don't know his channel specifically, but I have seen the classic "Potion Seller" vid back in the day due to how much of a meme it became. Jagos is honestly a really good name for an Overquil regardless of where you got it from in my opinion, but it's funnier when someone looks it up and finds a funny video featuring a 'character' with the same name.
I looked it up and you're so right LOL. The lips and the look in their eyes fit especially.

I've never heard of King of Fighters sadly, but it's cool you liked them enough to name Pokemon after characters from them! The nickname I'm saving for H-Typhlosion is Pyre due to it being part Ghost, and pyres generally being made for funerals and such. I usually pick Piplup in Gen 4, though in my recent playthrough of SP I chose Chimchar instead, who I named Blazer. Nothing quite so referential about that name beyond fire, though lol.

Really cool to hear you'll be doing the remaster! Depending on how you acquire it, you can also get the original character portraits if you happen to like the looks of those better.
I'm not directly familiar with all the games Atlus put out on the 3DS, but it's very possible a lot of the games I liked on there came from them in some way. I just didn't really pay a lot of attention to stuff like that at the time, more just 'game looks cool, so I play game and it is in fact cool, so game is good' (oonga boonga lmao).

That's what I'm hoping! Back when it came out there was a lot of noise because of it being the first switch game and the whole removing the Pokemon from the game thing. I'm not saying I don't think there were valid criticisms surrounding the game or anything, but I think playing it now removed from all of that will allow me to form my own opinion and enjoy it more calmly and clearly than if I had done so at launch.

Gen VI is probably my second favorite generation, either that or Gen V. It was the first time I actually met people in real life that liked Pokemon, and it was during that period where hype was a common thing around Nintendo's fanbases, so I ended up really following the entire Gen VI and all of its announcements until the end with a lot of excitement. Honestly, the biggest problem I have with that gen is that it ended way too soon. They could have done so much more with the concepts and frameworks they introduced during XY and ORAS, in terms of story and gameplay both. Pokemon Z being the biggest one, like you said. but they moved on to Gen VII and kinda dropped a lot of stuff that was being built up. I'm hoping with Z-A coming out we can see some of that Gen VI wonder back.

I just didn't really pay a lot of attention to stuff like that at the time, more just 'game looks cool, so I play game and it is in fact cool, so game is good' (oonga boonga lmao).
Oh right, that was around the time they were branching out to Nintendo 64 games as well. Yeah, Shadows of the Empire is really popular, so I've heard of that one for sure. Haven't played any of those 3D games sadly, but I know they're all highly regarded.

I'm looking forward to the shiny hunting! Since you have yet to play Legends Arceus, I can tell you from my part that the shiny hunting in that game was really fun as well. I had a similar experience to you with SV where I only had a few select shinies but then Arceus made it seem so accessible and entertaining I ended up getting about half a box or so in that game. It was the last thing I was doing before I stopped playing it in fact. You do have to wait until the very end of the postgame or so to get the mechanics to actually hunt in the most comfortable way, but once you get there it's a cool thing to do after you've done everything else in the game. And the game itself is all about catching Pokemon and traveling the natural landscapes, so I'm sure you're going to love it if you're into that part of the games! My favorite part of the game beyond the memories from Platinum was definitely using the ride Pokemon to move through the world. At first it's kinda clumsy but after a while you get used to the controls and find yourself switching seamlessly between all the ride Pokemon to move through the land and then stopping to survey Pokemon, and then go on the move again. It feels really fun and really smooth.

Nicknaming Pokemon is a very understated part of the games, it helps so much to get attached to them. I've been nicknaming Pokemon for every playthrough I've done for a long time already. Like I said I mainly take inspiration from other games I've played, and some times I'll be thinking of one game or franchise while playing a Pokemon game and so name a lot of my team after characters from that specific franchise. In the case of Legends Arceus it just so happened to be King of Fighters. It's a fighting game series that I mainly played during my childhood and was thinking about at that moment, and because it had loads and loads of characters I ended up getting inspiration from a few of them during that playthrough. Good choices on the names of your Pokemon as well! Pyre sounds really cool.

Atlus on the 3DS was mainly known for releasing the Shin Megami Tensei and Etrian Odyssey JRPG series, and they released a lot of them during that generation. Like I think over a dozen between the two or so. On top of a bunch of other games from other franchises, or standalones like Radiant Historia. I haven't played many of them myself either so don't worry, but I was always in awe at just how many games they released for the system.

I like to nickname Pokémon too!
My first Pokémon (Charizard in Red) was called Reptor, my Delta Charizard (Insurgence fan game) was Shadowyrm, Serperior (Black 2) was Vyper, I like to call Gardevoir Grace, and Milotic, Searen, to cite a few!
What about you ?

Really creative nicknames. I remember Delta Charizard from Insurgence, it was that cool skeleton dragon right? So Shadowyrm fits it perfectly.

As for me, right about the time I played Legends Arceus I had replayed Omega Ruby. I thought it was before Arceus, but now I'm realizing it was actually right after, so I think that's the last Pokemon game I played right now, technically. I replayed it because I wanted to relive the memories of playing through those remakes. It was a very hype time back then. I had played Alpha Sapphire back when it released, so I decided to go for Omega Ruby this time.

Because I played it after Arceus, I ended up getting into shiny hunting in this game as well, so I ended up getting a bunch of shinies through the DexNav and by soft resetting some Hoopa Legendaries. From that playthrough I had Pokemon like my starter Kim the Blaziken (Also named after a King of Fighters character, this time Kim Kaphwan, who's a Korean Taekwondo fighter who uses kicks much like Blaziken), Shiva the Krookodile, Black Eyes the shiny Delcatty, which was the first shiny I got through the DexNav and I did so really easily, which is what gave me the motivation to shiny hunt in this game as well, so that was a special one, Blurry the Masquerain, Bits N' Bops the Garbodor, and a shiny Registeel I got while soft resetting on a whim called Minty Fresh, after its mint green color. Later I got Party the Meganium, as one of the starters Professor Birch gives you during the post game.

That's surprising to hear, most of the time when I find someone's opinion online about SotE it's generally negative lol. I don't mind it, personally, but I understand where those people come from too, the game can get pretty confusing and hard at points.

Congrats on finding so many shinies in Legends! That's very likely to happen again in Gen 9 as long as you don't mind the differences. The waiting until the end of the game for best odds/mechanics is also a thing in Gen 9 unfortunately, but still very much worth the wait. Yeah, searching all the areas for any uncaught Pokemon until my Dex was near full was one of the first things I did when I started my first playthrough of Violet! I only wish there were more of the Dex available in Gen 9, but *shrug*.
Thankfully the mount Pokemon in Gen 9's pretty solid after some upgrades to it are found, but I do wish it was possible to travel around on more than just Miraidon/Koraidon.

Absolutely agreed. I started with my very first (official) Pokemon Charmander, (who I nicknamed Inferno, after a Transformer I really like, yes I'm a nerd like that) and haven't stopped since lol. The only Pokemon I've ever had on one of my teams I never nicknamed was my Chikorita starter in Heart Gold for a reason I've since forgotten.
Ah, makes sense I'd not heard of it before, as I'm not really into fighting games much. But hearing it has a lot of characters to pull names from is cool, especially with how many Pokemon there are to match it! And thank you! Sometimes what I come up with is more thought out and theme appropriate, and sometimes it's just random like my Swalot named Dave lmao.

Ah, I've heard of the SMT and EO game series plenty of times, but didn't know they were Atlus. I'll have to look through my 3DS again to find out if I had any others beyond Radiant Historia, though if there are, they'll be lesser known or stand alone games for sure. I seem to recall at least one game having their logo on it, though I don't remember what game it was anymore.

welcome!! let us enjoy a familar sense in this community and i hope you find people here that you enjoy to talk with
Thank you friend. I really hope so as well.

It's one of those games that went through phases of public opinion alternating between it being a classic of its time or not. Like a lot of N64 titles. It was a pretty experimental period so it's understandable that the opinions surrounding it would swing every once in a while.

I'm looking forward to playing Gen IX then. I'll go through Sword and Shield first though, so I'm hoping that one also has a lot of unique stuff for me to enjoy. I'll make sure to let you know how that goes when it happens if you want, including the nicknames I decide to give my team. I also sometimes go for stuff that seems pretty random. And then there are times I don't remember why I named a Pokemon what I named it, like Shiva the Krookodile I've mentioned earlier. It may have just been a cool nickname I decided to give it. Even so that still becomes attached to that particular Pokemon and grows to become something special in and of itself.

That makes sense indeed. It does make me wonder what good things people had to say about it during those points, though.
I hope you have a good time with Gen 8! Shield (as I might've mentioned?) is my personal favorite, so that Gen has my support obviously. :wynaut-laugh:
And please do! I really like hearing what others think about it, good and bad. Sometimes it even helps me look at things in new ways, which is always really cool.

From what I remember of being on the internet around those times, people used to consider it a milestone in terms of videogame adaptations of popular franchises. The public perception of pre-N64 movie adaptations was and I think still is pretty bad, so Shadows of the Empire was seen as one of the games around the point when consoles got advanced enough and videogames popular enough that an actual effort started being made to create games that explore the worlds of all these popular franchises in a way that's faithful and honors their quality. Most of the praise I remember was focused on the graphics, the setting, and the story, about how it felt like it fit naturally into the world of Star Wars, which people love. Nowadays people probably pick on the gameplay but I remember back then people talked more about the experience and what it meant for the medium at that time.

If Shield is your favorite Pokemon game then you're definitely going to love Legends Arceus. And I'll make sure to let you know about my experience once I play through it. I think I might post a thread in the appropriate forum once I finish it, detailing my thoughts on it.

Ah, so people around that time online treated it like people do "A Link to the Past" nowdays, then. The gameplay of Shadows (especially on higher difficulties) can be extremely jank at points, but people were right about how nice the story is, and while they look terrible by today's standards, I also love how the game looks graphics-wise. But I also grew up with the 64, so that's gonna be true with all the games I played on it lol.

I very likely will. I've yet to hear anything about it that's made me question if I'll actually enjoy it so far anyway, and that's rare for a Pokemon game for me these days.
I'd suggest either a game journal in the Video Games section, or whatever they call them in the Travel Journals section. And I hope you have a good time with them!
