1st Gen Help Build my Team for Stadium R2

Previously, I have cleared Round 1 of both Stadium 1 and Stadium 2.

Now, I am taking on Round 2. I'm building a team for all available cups. Not just the best, but also varied enough, as I think that'll attract views. I don't have to worry about TM count or chain breeding, only that they're plausibly legal. I won't include event moves, though.

I'm aiming to start posting my battles this July.

The teams are ordered by the cups I'm chronologically entering. My teams are WIP:

Phase 1 - Lower Levels

I'm starting off with the fastest Dragon Rage user. Since Pika Cup is fought within the Lv. 15-20 range, 40 HP damage should be a lot. The rest of the moves are just fillers, though. Maxed its level for highest speed possible.

I will be using the same Nidoking I've used previously on R1's Pika Cup. By right, my team should be made up of 4 at min levels of 15, and 2 at max of 20. Unfortunately, it's already at Lv. 16, so I've decided to deduct one level from Alakazam for whenever I want to use them together.

Backup Dragon Rage user. Arcanine can learn Fire Spin as an egg move.


Exeggutor Lv. 15
- Leech Seed
- Sleep Powder
- Psychic
- Toxic

A sleep inflictor would be helpful. And while I'm at it, it can set up Leech Seed, too. Toxic is to inflict bad poison as an alternatively to sleep. When a seeded target is badly poison, the toxic counter applies to seed effects as well. Exeggcute can inherit level-up moves Leech Seed and Sleep Powder as egg moves in Gen II.


Tauros Lv. 15
- Body Slam
- Earthquake
- Thunderbolt
- Hyper Beam

I think I could go for another speedy sweeper. Body Slam for STAB, EQ for coverage. Thunderbolt is for Water-types. It runs on 70 base Special, so it shouldn't deal that low damage. I picked Hyper Beam as the last option so that when the opponent is at their last mon, I can pick an instant win. While it does not require recharging when knocking out an opponent in Gen I, this effect does not apply to mechanics in Stadium.

Elekid @ Quick Claw
- Thunderbolt

- Hidden Power [Ghost]

One of the fastest electrics. Since its Attack is similar to Sp. Att and it's faster than Abra and Gastly, I thought it could beat them with HP ghost, exploiting their poor physical defenses.

Potential Item
When it comes to items, I don't know what would suit best for an attacker. I don't think a type-enhancer would help with 1 more point of damage, and I'm reserving Miracle Berry and Scope Lens for another Pokémon. In the end, I decided to go with quick claw so that it'll stand a better chance of breaking the speed tie with Diglett and land an Ice Punch.

Another faster powerhouse. Not among the fastest, but close. Thunderwave for paralysis support, as I find reducing the opponent's speed to be helpful. The Miracle Berry is the Gen II counterpart of Lum Barry, where it heals status effect.


Poliwag @ Berry Juice

- Hypnosis
- Body Slam
- Ice Beam

I picked Poliwag next as it's Abra-fast. Surf for STAB, Hypnosis for sleep support, Body Slam for paralysis support and Ice Beam for coverage. Hypnosis and Body Slam are level-up moves, but can be obtained by breeding.


Scyther @ Scope Lens
- Sword Dance
- Slash
- Wing Attack
- Hidden Power [Ground]

A powerhouse speedster. I paired Slash with Scope Lens to increase Critical hit chances. I could go further with Focus Energy, but I chose Sword Dance instead, as the boost it provides is consistent. For Hidden Power, I picked Ground over STAB Bug for coverage. Focus Energy, Slash and Wing Attacks are level-up moves, but Scyther can inherit them when both its Scyther parents know the moves while breeding.


Chikorita @ Leftovers
- Giga Drain
- Light Screen
- Protect
- Leech Seed

I think I would need a Grass-type to safely switch into Diglett, as it is one of the fastest. I would also change it a little from R1: In addition to keeping Leech Seed, I would also add Giga Drain and Leftovers for passive healing.


Magnemite @ Gold Berry
- Rain Dance
- Thunder
- Thunderwave
- Hidden Power [Water]

The last speedster I have to worry about is Scyther, so I thought this would be the right Pokémon to switch into. Like Chikorita, I've brought it over from R1.

Thunderbolt or Thunder?
On one hand, Thunderbolt is a safer, more accurate option where I could attack straight away safely without spending a turn setting up Rain Dance. But on the other hand, the intended target could just switch out or, if they have coverage, KO Magnemite before it could attack. I think setting up rain instead of immediately attack would benefit in in the long run rather than risk hitting an immunity.

Razor Leaf can be bred into Oddish. Double Edge is the last resort to hit foes resisting Razor Leaf. It's to at least do something after inflicting sleep/bad poison, and if there's no other reserve that could be a better matchup.

Disclaimer: Knows a little about Generation 1 and 2 mechanics, but not tons. Has not played either Stadium in ages. Evidently changed some mechanics from the main games.

A few thoughts:
Stadium 1:

• Charizard: Perhaps Earthquake over Fire Spin? Could try Swords Dance + Body Slam over Fire Spin + Slash too. Makes Fly more threatening with the latter selection. (Swapped Slash to Body Slam to reduce the odds of critting and ignoring the Swords Dance stat boost.)
• Parasect: Appreciates the strength of Spore. Lacks many other advantages than that. How do you plan to use it?
• Persian: Maybe Double Team over Pay Day? Nerfed evasion from the main games. Could be an option if you have time. Alternatively, Body Slam for the paralysis chance.
• Pikachu: Presumably chose this for a specific cup. Perhaps Light Screen over Growl? Allows Pikachu to paralyze, set up a Light Screen, and then let someone like Dodrio come in and stack Agility (or whatever other combo).

Stadium 2:

• Meganium: Maybe Curse over Reflect? Should be able to stall reasonably well with Meganium with Synthesis. Could even drop the Grass move for Earthquake. (Might want to consider someone like Snorlax for a Curse strategy, though. Only fears Fighting types.)
• Jumpluff: Considers it a little on the frail side. Might not get tons of use out of Synthesis. Have you considered Encore? Works best if you see a Ground or Grass move coming. Switch Jumpluff in, then Encore it to lock it into that useless move continuously. Should have the Speed to pull it off.
• Girafarig: Why Baton Pass? Gave it no boosts to pass on.

• Charizard: My original plan for charizard is toxic + fly + fire spin to stall as much. But since they are unreliable for their inaccuracy, swords dance set might work better.
• Parasect: For now, I have none.
• Persian: I think body slam would be better as I don't trust evasion boosts to work in my favor.
• Pikachu: It's meant for Prime Cup, Master Division. Unfortunately for this gen, Light Screen will wear off when Pikachu switches out.

Stadium 2: I might not end up using any of the Pokémon you've suggested making changes on, TBH. I was just listing out the possibilities with no intention of using all of them. Girafarig had Agility to pass speed boosts onto the next Pokemon, but I replaced with with Crunch for coverage. Would consider changing it back if I were to add it to my team.

If Substitute on an incoming status move, Moltres can survive a little longer for Sky Attack. Leer is to set up revenge-killing, as a worst-case scenario.

Confuse Ray instantly confuses the enemy for stalling. Screech is for lowering defense, not only to increase confusion damage but also to set up revenge-killing. Double Edge is the strongest attack to dish out. Sunny Day is for supporting Fire-types. Miracle Berry is the Gen II version of Lum Berry, and I think a quick recover from status would help it setting up.

It needs to be Lv. 55 to enter fully-evolved. Extremespeed is for priority backed by its high Attack. Surf and Flamethrower are for coverages. Thunderwave is for paralysis support. For priority attack and paralysis, King's Rok's flinching complements its capability to hit first despite its average speed.

Incidentally, Dragonite can't learn EQ in Gen I-II. so that idea of coverage is gone.

I'll enter this starter here to teach it Surf. The best I think it could do is paralysis support and defense-lowering to set the opponent up for revenge-killing. Thunderbolt is for STAB, but I think the best damage output is Seismic Toss.

I think STAB + Thunderbolt is all the attack it needs. Amnesia is for set-up if needed, and Recover is to heal back when it gets worn down.

I've replaced Ice Beam with T-bolt so that when it comes to Water-types, it can deal with them itself rather than having to switch out.

Lugia @ Scope Lens

I previously gave it Hydro Pump, but I find it 80% acc too unreliable so I downgraded it to EQ as it has better coverage, specifically towards Electric. Surf could deal with Rock-types better, but I decided to drop as I could switch into Suicune to tank the hit and return a Water STAB. Scope Lens is to raise its crit rate higher, especially when Aeroblast does that too. IMO, 90% acc and above is an acceptable risk, so I decided to keep Aeroblast. If I turned out to be wrong, though, I'll replace it with Surf.


Raikou @ Miracle Berry

A revised set that no longer depends on rain. I've replaced Thunder with Crunch for extra coverage, and Rain Dance with Reflect as a support. Halving physical attacks would be useful to my team. For an item, I gave it a Miracle Berry as I think status would hinder its role much.

Celebi @ Leftovers
- Psychic
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Heal Bell

With Leftovers, Giga Drain and Leech Seed, it is a passive healing specialist. It's also a cleric, carrying Heal Bell to fix up bad status from other teammates. Psychic is its alternate STAB Move.
