"He's a very strange one, that doctor.."
When Marlow was still a Mortal, and was known to many as Marlow Galahad, Doctor, or just 'Crazy Scientist', he used to live in a small English town known as Clovelly, born and raised. When his mother gave birth to him, in his fathers health home, he was named Marlow, perhaps out of irony since their house was on a hill near a lake.His father was a doctor, and in turn, his father too was a doctor, and Marlow also became a Doctor. The Galahad family line had been looking after the town for 5 generations. He was entrusted with the lives of many, and was expected to look after them, to help them when they had trouble, a simple and quiet life.
But Marlow's quiet life was soon about to end, or rather be reborn.
Marlow never got too attached to anybody, perhaps it was because he repelled them. He wasn't the most sociable type, generally staying in his home on top of the hill, reading books, writing down medical notes. His daily routine was shockingly bland, but he never really minded it. Occasionally someone would be brought up to his home, seeking medical attention. He provided them with the medical assistance they required, and they left a few coins and left, besides Emily, the beautiful daughter of the inn-keeper. He had been infatuated with her ever since he met her at the Inn, to go have a drink for his day of birth. Emily was an occasional visitor, often coming because of silly accidents. This time she came because she had cut her arm while she was cooking food. How one manages to use a knife as unskillfully as her, he would never know. Generally it was Marlow who opened up conversation, but this time, the roles were reversed, and his current patient started to ask him about work, family, and then things got more personal.
"Doctor, how come you never come down to the town?" asked Emily while I was applying alcohol to her cut, letting out a small whimper. "Well, I don't think people think too kindly of me. I'd only be a bother if I were to go down, and please, call me Marlow." Responded Marlow, fetching gauze from inside. Upon returning into his living room, he wrapped Emily's arm in gauze. "Alright, you're all patched up. You be careful now, don't go cutting yourself." Said Marlow, before he heard a rapping coming from the door. 'Busy day today..' He said as he opened the door, revealing what appeared to be a middle-aged man. The man didn't look particularly injured, and he definitely didn't seem familiar, which was odd, considering that Marlow had treated every person in the village. It wasn't a particularly large village at the time. "Good evening.." Said the man at the door, a certain raspiness in his voice before he collapsed on the ground. Marlow yelped from shock, and brought him inside, putting him on the couch. Little did Marlow know that his hospitality would result in two deaths that evening.
As he was attending to the man, putting a wet towel on his forehead and checking his temperature, the usual, Marlow noticed, upon putting his hand on the mans forehead to check for a fever, that the man felt strangely cold, and looked very pale. Marlow, thinking he had a dead body on his couch (and he wasn't half wrong) immediately went into a state of panic, until he noticed the man shuffling about slightly. "Emily, can you watch over him while I go bring some herbs and a blanket from inside?" Asks a relieved Marlow. Emily hadn't left yet, concerned about the old man. "Sure, I don't mind." She said, in her cheery attitude of hers. Marlow went inside to wash his hands, and as he had just dried them off, he heard a blood curling scream. The shocked Marlow ran out of the bathroom and into the living room to find the man having pounced on top of Emily, and was... biting her.. "E-Emil-" was all he managed until the man averted his gaze to me, with a look of curiosity. He removed his teeth from Emily's neck, and let her fall from his arms, as her limp body hit the floor with a thud. He didn't know how to react. He didn't even resist to the man digging into his throat. After that, everything happened in a flash. He heard people running up to the house, and then the bite around his neck loosened.
Why? Villagers burst through the door.
Why? People were screaming, someone was crying. I didn't bother looking. My gaze was affixed on the dead body 3 feet away from me.
Why? My vision darkened. I woke up some time later. I don't remember much after that. Only walking, talking, sadness.
Why was I left to live?
