Natsuko Soyokaze

Dewford Town
Tsu stops to stretch after getting off the ferry. This one was considerably smaller than the one she'd come to Hoenn on, with no room to walk around or take pictures. It had been a sort of snap decision, boarding the ferry so early, but standing here in Dewford, she's glad she made it. Leaving Slateport feels right, like actually starting her journey.
She pulls out her PokéNav as she and a dozen other people leave the dock, giving Aunt Nyamo a call. She picks up on the first ring, as though she'd been waiting for Tsu's call. Or just playing on her phone, no need to be dramatic...
"Hi Aunt Nyamo! I made it to Dewford! The trip was long, slow, and boring, just like you said."
"That's great to hear, Tsu! I wish you would have stayed for longer, though. We barely got to spend any time together!"
"That sounds fun, but it's not much of a journey if I don't go anywhere, you know? Besides, I had to leave before I got too comfortable. Like a bandage, right? Just rip it off and get it over with."
"Well, I'm glad to hear that leaving us was so painful." Nyamo laughs, and it makes Tsu smile to hear. "We'll have plenty of chances to talk. I know you'll keep me posted. Any idea what you'll do first?"
Tsu had to think about that. "Probably get more information. It's a small town, but there's plenty to do here. There's a Gym and a Contest Hall, so I'll probably check those out at some point. But I should probably check in at the Pokémon Center first."
"That's my girl! Remember to use your head. If you want to see the country, you need to be smart about it."
Speaking of Pokémon... "Oh, how's Sandygast doing? He's not a hassle, is he?"
"At first, but I think he's settling down. I think meeting Rena was good for him. He probably just needed a friend." She sounds slightly smug about that. Rena is Aunt Carrie's Mightyena, and Natsuko can only imagine how that meeting went.
"Well, that's good. Sorry to just leave him like that, but I don't think he'd like going traveling with me." And, to be honest, she doesn't want to travel with him, either. "And if he's too much, you can always release him back into his home."
"Sure, but with my help, he could learn to behave, and I might take him to class with me. I think the kids would love playing in a sandbox that can play back."
"What? Aren't you afraid he'll try to eat them or something?"
"Not at all! He'll probably just absorb a little bit of energy from them, and if he spreads it out, they'll barely notice! Maybe they'll actually go down for nap time this way..."
Tsu stares at her screen, shocked and amused at the same time. "Aunt Nyamo, that's horrible!"
Nyamo laughs at Tsu's expression. "I'm just kidding! Hey... how'd it go at the Contest Hall? Did you get signed up?"
"Yeah, but I didn't compete. I was going to, but... I think I just got nervous. That's why I got on the ferry. Just needed to move forward, I guess."
Nyamo frowns, but her expression softens. "Natsuko... you have nothing to be nervous about. These Contests are supposed to be fun! Just get up there and be yourself! Show how wonderful you are and how skilled your Pokémon are. I'm sure you'll do great. Especially with how much the Contest Pass costs."
"No need to worry about that! It was only ₽2000. You know how Dad is, I probably have more money than you do right now."
Again, the humor went out of Nyamo's face. "That's not fair, Natsuko. And you shouldn't be so cavalier with your money. It's all fun and games until your check bounces, and then where are you?"
Tsu winces, making a mental note not to joke about money with a teacher. "Sorry, Nyamo. I'll be more careful, I promise."
Nyamo sighs, taking a second to compose herself and give Natsuko a smile. "Take care of yourself, Tsu. I'll let you get back to your journey now, but give me a call later. I'm sure Carrie would like to see you, too. And maybe call your parents, if they're not too busy. I love you."
"You too, Aunt Nyamo. Bye!" Tsu hangs up, wandering aimlessly while she collects her thoughts. She heads south along the pier, stopping at a small shack to get directions. She notices a sign, offering rental gear for fishing at a local Fishing Spot for only ₽500. Despite the conversation she'd literally just had, she eagerly takes the man up on his offer.
