Wednesday, September 30th @ 1500 - Winston Ranch (Route 102)

Rest of the job went without problem, as the Winston Ranch crew herded up the Tauros for the order, and they didn't need Clint to bring them down to the docks, as that was going to be handled by the full-time guys, leaving Clint finished up with his work. All in all not a bad diversion from the journey, as Clint met a useful resource in Sergei, as well as the money to come on top of that.

Right, he thought, Clint still had to head up to the farm house to collect his payment. He was promised twenty-thousand for his work, good money for a couple long days on the ranch. Clint had to return the Mudsdale he was riding, so he had to make the long walk up the laneway to the farm house. The Winston's house was a large, old style farm house painted white. It was quite an imposing building sitting on top of a hill, and the laneway took you up the hill, forcing you into looking up at the house.

Out in front of the house was Irving Winston yelling at Issac and Sam about something they screwed up on, before Irving throwing up his hands and walking off. Clint caught up to Irving on the steps of the house and stopped him.

"I'm here to settle up sir, before I take off."

"I owe ya some money then don't I kid," Irving replied.

Clint nodded in agreement, and Irving took out a wad of cash, before counting out fifteen grand and handing it over to Clint. Clint looked down at the cash, a little bit shy from what he was promised, but it was better than zero. He was also asked for his trainer number, apparently they get a tax break for hiring trainers for short-term work or something like that. Clint obliged, despite being shorted on the payment, even he wasn't sure why he did so. Screw these guys is what Clint's attitude should have been, but who knows in ten years from now when this trainer thing didn't work out he might need to come here again. So Clint thanked Irving Winston for the work, and left the ranch.

...

Clint found himself walking aimlessly around what was known as the Trainer's Corridor in the middle of Littledale, taking the afternoon to relax after a fairly eventful last few days. Despite the nature of his journey, where he needed to be on the move frequently, he wouldn't mind spending more time in Littledale. The small farm town was more of his vibe then the bigger cities like Slateport. Sadly for Clint, they liked to put gyms and tournaments in big cities. He would have to learn to live with that fact, but in the meantime Clint could appreciate the time he got to spend outdoors, where he felt more at home.

Of course, a voice that unfortunately became familiar for Clint to hear over the past couple of days was chirping at him yet again. Sam Winston, from the ranch was complaining about Clint being a coward, because they hadn't battled yet. Suppose Clint could partake, after all who was he to turn down free practice, especially when it finds him, and not vice versa. Clint turned around to see Sam walking over to him.

"So you's thought you were gonna waltz into town, collect a payday, beat our gym leader and leave, didn't ya," Sam asked.

"That's exactly what I had in mind," Clint snapped back.

"Well that ain't how its gonna work, I'm gone beat you so bad you turn around back the way you came," Sam insisted.

"I'll believe it when I see it," Clint shot back, his right hand hovering over the Pokeball on his holster containing his new capture, Ralts.

Sam readied a Pokeball of his own,

"I only got the one Pokemon right now, if I knock out one of yours I win," he clarified.

Clint was fine with that, and sent Ralts into battle, Sam's sole Pokemon was a Numel, at least that's what Clint's Pokedex had led him to believe. According to the fancy device everyone insisted trainer's have with them, this Numel was a fire and ground type. Would have been easier to go with Poliwag if that was the case, but Ralts should be able to get the job done. Now to get Ralts' moveset ready to go. Sergei had shown Clint how to use the PokeNav to find out the moveset of any Pokemon you caught, was just a manner of Clint sorting it out. As Clint was scrolling through the menus, Numel used the attack Flame Wheel, covering itself in fire and charging Ralts, sending him tumbling back, rolling on the ground a few times before dusting himself off and standing back up.

"I thought you were a tough guy, can't come up with an attack," Sam prodded,

"I know Nu's moves off by heart."

Doubt you caught your Numel yesterday, Clint thought to himself. Clint continued to struggle his way through the PokeNav's menu, but could see Numel charging again with another Flame Wheel. But this time, Ralts had took it upon himself to use Teleport to get out of the way. Guess these psychic types could be pretty smart themselves. Disregarding the PokeNav now, Clint recalled that Ralts used Confusion on his Poliwag yesterday, so now he directed Ralts to use it now that he was clear out of the way of Numel's Flame Wheel. The waves sent out by Ralts clearly hurt Numel's head, even the two trainers watching could feel a little pain as well.

Clint tried to recall what other moves Ralts used, figured those were the moves to use. One of those moves was Double-Team, if Sam's plan was to Flame Wheel Ralts into submission, being harder to hit would go a long way into defusing that strategy. Like clockwork, here came Sam with another Flame Wheel. Rinse and repeat with a Teleport to avoid the attack, and a Confusion to counter-attack. This left Sam scratching his head, as if this is the first time he's been thrown a curveball like this. Sam had Numel take a deep breath and focus in on Ralts, that move went by the name Focus Energy. Made critical hits more likely. Ralts went with a Double-Team once again, making Ralts more likely to evade those more likely critical hits. Ralts was moving so quickly back and forth Numel couldn't tell where to aim its Flame Wheel, but still managed to connect on the attack, launching Ralts back, also appearing to burn Ralts as well.

"Looks like I got your Ralts burning now, I got you where I want you," Sam taunted.

But just after he said that, his Numel starts smoldering as well, somehow Numel had started burning. Sam had a look of shock on his face. Clint, who was also confused on what had just transpired, gave off a smug look like he knew what had happened.

"I ain't never seen anything like this, what sort of tricks you pulling," Sam shouted.

"Its called Synchronize you idiots," a voice came out of the trees, as well as a woman with brunette hair, looked to be early 30's, who knows exactly plus according to Clint's father it was rude to ask a woman her age anyways.

"If a Pokemon with Synchronize gets afflicted with a status condition, it passes the condition on to the opponent's pokemon that gave it the condition. Of course you'd know that if you joined the 21st century and learned how to use a PokeNav," this woman explained, grabbing the PokeNav out of Clint's hand.

The woman pressed a variety of buttons on the PokeNav before handing it back to Clint, now the PokeNav had all the data on his Ralts on the page, including the ability Synchronize and his entire moveset. Clint hoped he'd be able to find it by himself one day.

"Better learn how to work that thing soon kid. That whole 'tough guy' act you got is going to wear thin once people realize you're an idiot," the woman continued on. Clint just stood in silence, suppose he had to take his lumps on this one.

"Aren't you that May woman from the Institute," Sam asked.

"Yes I am Winston, does your grandfather know you've escaped the insane asylum," May quickly retorted.

"They ain't know I'm gone," Sam answered.

"Suppose you should head back before they find out," May dismissed Sam,

"As for you tough guy, you dress like a local but I've never seen you."

Clint finally took his turn to speak, rather meekly,

"Well I ain't from here miss, I'm taking on the league here."

"And how's that working out for you," May snarkly asked.

"Got a couple badges so far, one in Dewford the other in Petalburg," Clint answered.

"Petalburg, not bad kid. Maybe you're smarter than you look, or maybe just luckier," May laughed,

"Either way, have fun with Merry. You two should get along just fine, y'all could pretend electricity was never invented," May said, walking away waving good-bye to Clint.

May was a bit off-putting, she had a point though, Clint would have to put up with the modern world every now and then. Focus now was finding Merry.

A fair chance to prove yourself
Saturday, October 3rd - about 9 a.m. - Mauport Bridge
That high-pitched yelp sort of woke me up, but wasn't enough to make me spring up from my bed. I opened my eyes, looked at the ceiling, listened for what was happening, but soon went back to snoozing. Snoozing, but not quite sleeping.

When I woke up, I tried to play it safe, but could already notice Avril being slightly more nervous than usual. Of course, I could also notice Rei being more nervous than usual. I usually let him stay in my backpack during some nights and from there, he works his magic on most of my stuff… like the flashlight I remembered to buy after the Dewford misadventure. But when I checked my bag, the pocket that I had closed shut was now slightly open, the stuff inside was not in the position I left it in, and Rei was… very awake. And that yelp, I still remember it well.

I think I know what's been happening, but I wait it out until after breakfast - kindly offered by the Bed and Breakfast staff, obviously. I simply try to talk about what I'd like to do next, which is… head straight to Mauville and stay there for a while. But as is predictable, Avril doesn't seem to agree, and from there…

"Well, why not give you a chance now?" I smile, facing Avril on a small makeshift battlefield. She's definitely conflicted, I can see it in her eyes, but Poppy nods to her and flies forward, twirling around Rei. And the blonde girl doesn't stop her, so I assume we can start.

As per suggestion of the B&B owner, this will be a Sky Battle. Both Pokémon can float by themselves, meaning that instead of getting KOed, a battle can simply be won when one of the Pokémon touches ground in any way- for some reason, Avril seems quite reassured to hear that.

I let Avril start and, cleverly I should say, she tells Poppy to go for a Wish. A small comet is shot up from her body as I tell Rei to… wait it out. He moves around, zipping around the Flabébé, but doesn't do much, earning some confused looks. "Thunder Wave!" I then call out, and sparks spread out from my Pokémon. Poppy dodges a few but then is hit as she looks busy with something… probably controlling her own Wish, because after she's inflicted with Paralysis, the small comet comes back down, impacts on her body, and shatters without any real effect. Avril is not that happy.

I can tell Poppy has slowed down, which means it's time for my next stage of Rei's bare-bones strategy. Easy enough when you only have those 4 moves, uh? As I was saying, it's time for Charge Beam, which Rei keeps trying to hit over and over while Avril really doesn't give Poppy that many commands. I can still appreciate it though… how Poppy is able to dodge most of those attacks with blowing Fairy Wind in the right direction.

Avril is not telling her nothing but her Pokémon is still doing great, that in itself… is interesting.

I have to change my strategy here, though, or at least try. Poppy is still able to hit back with Magical Leaf from a range. And so I tell Rei to go for Spark… and it works! He's much faster than her, and this allows him to put some nice blows on Poppy. All while Avril, again, isn't sure what to do.

I mostly hear her giving… inspirational quotes or something like that. "We have to do this for Venus!" She calls out. All while I stand there and look at the battle ending in my favor.

It's when Rei comes closer for yet another Spark that Poppy does something… new. My opponent - the trainer - has been telling her to use that Magical Leaf quicker, or something like that. I can see Poppy has been trying to keep some leaves around her in case Rei would come closer. But now it's a rather large whirlwind of leaves, no… petals… surrounding that tiny sprite… where did that come from?

This is a situation I've seen in other battles too: my opponent does something new or pulls a trick I didn't expect. I already know I can't predict all of those strategies and really, I don't care much, as long as I can still react and do my own thing. I'm not excessively scared even when Rei is pushed back considerably due to all the petals hitting him at once, because I can see him recover quite quickly.

"Wow, that's Petal Blizzard!" I hear from the side of the battlefield - which really, is only a small opening on the side of the main road, stretching between the Bed & Breakfast and another separate building. Some more people seem to have appeared and are looking at the ongoing battle… which in itself makes me feel that strange mixture of pride and pressure. Bad news Avril, now I have to win this.

After a few more Petal Blizzards, coming my way, Rei is starting to understand how it works. As far as I know, that's a relatively new move for Poppy and Avril, which makes it less threatening than it could really be. The only issue is how to deal damage, but I find a way eventually… with Tynamo launching himself upwards and coming back down with a Spark.

Petal Blizzard is not enough to block the attack, only slow it down a bit… but it seems Rei knows what the objective of this battle really is. I see him waving his tail around, pushing Poppy towards the ground as he hits her. She tries to slow herself down with a Fairy Wind but… the stem of her flower touches ground nonetheless. And that is the signal for me to celebrate.

Letting yourself go
??? - ??? - Littleroot Research Lab

What is it that you want? Why are we still doing this?

A tall fiery Pokémon glares down at me while I shrug towards the girl who holds my Pokéball. For an undefined amount of time I've been here trying to survive, fighting for my life but failing on every possible level. This bird is fast, it can anticipate my moves, it blinds me when it attacks, and it hurts badly. I can feel my body losing its shape and consistency as its flames reach me, I can feel my insides literally erupting beneath my skin and flailing to escape.

I have tried every trick in the book and at first it worked. I evaded a few attacks - a big accomplishment against this thing - with the techniques I use most of the time. For example, I launched myself up, blowing air with my second mouth to get momentum, and avoided a sweeping kicking attack, then I tried to get some more speed advantage, but it blocked my bite and I was forced to let it go.

And from then onwards, nothing but pain. My attacks avoided, my movements predicted. My rage was building up more and more, knowing it was the one to start the fight in the first place, and for no good reason. Not like there's any normal food around here for either of us.

Sometimes, the bird stops in its place and taunts me. It wants me to come forward and attack even when the both of us know how it's going to go. Some background voice tells me to do something even if I'm not really in the mood anymore, but then I just let myself go and attack again. Of course, I try to invoke some pity as well. I try to look defeated, I try to look submissive, I think I'm doing it well, but my opponent doesn't agree.

Then the voice became something along the lines of "Let yourself go." Or "Do what feels better for you." I think I've also heard "Concede" once but I have no clue what that word means specifically. I looked for the girl - she was still in her usual place.

I grind my teeth. I know there's no way I can win this battle, my attacks are easily avoidable and even when they're not, they barely hurt. But what alternative do I have? Running away? Don't think I haven't tried it - I was just stopped, picked up just like I usually pick up my snacks, and kicked or punched around like a metal husk until I was conveniently in the middle of the battlefield again. All while I still hear things like "Give up!"

And then? And then what? At this point, I have blood-shot eyes. It's all I see. Don't know whose, but I know it will spill eventually. I cough up my last sparkles, mixed in with some dirt, and make my last strides towards my enemy. All it does is dodge my charge.

My last breath howls through my drooling mouths before the larger one drags my whole body with it and I fall down to the ground. Fine. Be quick… I cry out one last time, before my eyes close and my brain shuts down.

Who would've thought, I would've soon been opening those very eyes again? Apparently, my new life was just getting started.

Edison Kintobor

Route 110 Land Bridge

When the sun rises the next morning, Neo wakes up Ed with a low buzz and a weak zap of electricity. Ed attempts to wake Addie by gently shaking him, to no effect, but the rustle of unwrapping a food bar and the smell it emits awaken the hungry child immediately. Addie happily eats his breakfast while Ed gets dressed for the day.

As he packs up his tent, he tucks the odd cloth from yesterday deeper into his bag. Whatever signal it was putting out yesterday is weaker today, and he can't hear the noise it made anymore, but he doesn't want it to distract him. Once that's taken care of, he settles his bags across his shoulders and sets out in search of breakfast.

Perhaps if he'd payed more attention to the local area, or ever read a field survival guide, this would be a much simpler affair. But what he had paid attention to was Pokémon physiology, and he knows firsthand that Munchlax have an incredible sense of smell, and his in particular has an insatiable curiosity. So, by letting Addie lead the way, the Kinyo Trio move aimlessly from one patch of grass to another, which leads to an interesting discovery: mushrooms.

The massive bridge overhead blocks out a majority of sunlight, and combined with the moisture and lower temperature near the water, the large support beams of the bridge prove to be an ideal place for mushrooms to grow. Ed isn't sure what kind of mushrooms there are, but the most common mushroom is a small brown variety with a slightly nutty aroma.

After gathering a small amount, his next challenge is to cook them. He's heard of the dangers of wild mushrooms, some of which are even toxic, but he's confident that cooking will alleviate that issue. To that end, a good stick isn't hard to come by, and he's able to skewer his mushrooms upon the stick. Next, he balances it atop some rocks, and watches as Neo's Thunder Shock works sweet science on the fungi. After a short amount of time, the mushrooms are darkened and steaming.

He carefully plucks a piece from the stick, popping it into his mouth. It's hotter than he anticipated, and he burns his tongue slightly as he chews, breathing with his mouth open to try and cool it. Overall not bad, there isn't much flavor to them, though they are dense and a little spongy. Good enough for a light meal, although he would prefer something more tasty.

He finds a solution to that closer to midmorning, when their meandering path leads them to an encounter with a wild Pokémon! Passing under a small tree, Ed narrowly dodges a stream of seeds. He looks up just as a second volley hits the ground near his feet. Sitting on a low branch is a small, black and white bird with a red stripe running from its beak to the crest on its head.

Ed immediately backpedals, stepping out of range of the tree. Neo sticks close to him, but Addie inspects the seeds on the ground. He seems disappointed in them, and the bird, Pikipek, chirps aggressively at him.

"Addie, get back here! We don't want to intrude on its habitat, it's against the rules!"

Addie looks up at Pikipek, but immediately gets distracted by something behind it, in the branches of the tree. Ed looks, and spots some ripe-looking fruit, perhaps plums, hanging there. Pikipek chirps again, spittle more Bullet Seeds at Addie. The little Munchlax covers his head with his arms, but otherwise shrugs off the attacks.

Pikipek swoops down toward Addie, but Ed quickly orders Neo to use Thunder Wave, paralyzing the winged menace before it can attack Addie with its formidable beak. Neo dutifully levitates up into the tree, shaking several plums loose for Ed to collect, along with a small nest. Ed looks to Neo in confusion, but upon closer inspection of the nest, he spots a small spherical object with a black top and a yellow marking. It's an Ultra Ball!

"What's this doing in a bird's nest?" He vaguely recalls that many birds collect shiny objects, keeping them as trophies to attract mates. He momentarily considers writing a report on Pikipek, but quickly dismisses the idea when he realizes he'd have to intentionally seek out more of them. Instead, he and his team make off like bandits before the bird can recover from Neo's shock.

The plums are tart and juicy, not to Addie's preference, but Ed doesn't mind so much. "To be safe, let's avoid any more trees if we can. We'll probably have better luck looking for berry bushes closer to the ground. They'd be sweeter, and with less risk of birds in them."

Which is exactly how they spend the next few hours, with Addie investigating any bushes he can find in search of berries. And luckily for him, they actually find quite a few. It seems that blackberries are in season, and Addie happily chows down on any he can find, with Ed grabbing some for himself if he can.

Ed looks over his haul when they stop for lunch. Addie has already sampled some of everything, but Ed still shares what he has with him. He's left with a few plums, a handful of berries, some brown mushrooms, and a small mushroom with a red cap. It reminds him of the mushrooms from that game about two mustachioed brothers rescuing a princess, but he has no illusions that it's some kind of power-up.

He sets up his cooking stick, popping a berry into his mouth as Neo charges up their Thunder Shock. Thinking about it, Neo hasn't eaten anything recently. They eat electricity, but there hasn't been much of that around while camping. They've never complained of hunger before, but Ed hasn't gone this long without a place to recharge, either...

He digs through his backpack, finding a few rechargeable batteries that still have some juice in them. He offers one to Neo after they finish cooking his lunch. They buzz happily, and he sets it down so they can drain it for sustenance. Ed smiles at his Pokémon, then looks out over the expanse before them. It will take another day or so before they reach Mauville, but he's enjoying his time out here so far. He'll have to do this more often...

Chapter 3: Part 8 - vs. Wally, Part 1
15:00 - 15:07 Petalburg Gym
I take a look at my XT's clock, 15:00, it says. It's time.

I'm standing in front of the door that would take me to the battlefield. Where Leader Norman used to take his challengers, where the audience will see me, Jordie Huges, beat Hoenn's Hall of Fame, Wally Greene.

Yesterday was certainly the worst time to have contact again with the people in Unova. It just added more to how anxious I was feeling with challenging someone who got to the Hall of Fame at a young age, a prodigy, that's what Wally is.

But I'll be fine! I trained for this! I'm ready to take his challenge!

I keep telling myself that as I give my final breath and go past that door.
I hear the audience cheering as I walk into the battlefield. I bow my head at Leader Norman, who's acting as the referee for this battle, and Wally, who walked in at the same time I did. Needless to say most of the cheer was for him.

"Are both challengers ready?," asks the retired Gym Leader.

"Yes, Master Norman!" Wally nods and I follow shortly after, with my hand on Gabby's and Maroon's dusk balls.

Norman nods at both of us. "Both of you, give it your all, then. May the battle begin!"

Spoiler:

"Let's go! Indy, Deedee!," Wally calls, sending out his first two pokemon, both of them are Indeedee, apparently, Normal and Psychic types, one of which sets up the Psychic Terrain upon entrance. I smile. Is that what Hui's brother meant when he said I was ready for him?

"Gabby, Maroon!" I throw both dusk balls in the air. The green sparks fly upon opening, and Maroon drops their anchor on the ground upon entrance, with their helm floating in place.

"Trick Room?," Wally asks, giving me a blank stare.

"W-wha-!?" I snap, and so does Gabby, who's more intimidated than I am. He really identified my strategy by just seeing my first two pokémon. That comes with experience, I guess.

Wally seems to retract that statement after Norman clears his throat, though.

"N-no, it's not bad! I mean, it depends a lot on team synergy, right?," he says. "If you are able to use it then I guess those two badges were well earned… I didn't want to sound intimidating, sorry!"

"... sure. As long as you don't feel you have to go easy on me…"

He looks at Norman, trying to see his reaction, but then grins. "Never."

"Well then, Maroon, Gyro Ball at Deedee! Gabby, position yourself behind Maroon and start charging for Trick Room!"

Gabby does as told, and Maroon lunges forward and raises their anchor like a scorpion's tail. They start spinning it like a lasso before throwing it at the female Indeedee.

Deedee's eyes glow in a pink light before disappearing from her spot and taking Indy's place instead, who blocks Maroon's attack with a green barrier. After the anchor touches the ground, Indy does a maneuver with his arms and his barrier takes the form of a pink-ish fireball that is shot at Maroon with great strength.

'Tsk. Okay, that move was more risky than I thought.'

"Gabby, you ready?"

Gabby chirps positively and unleashes all of her energy to get Trick Room running. Gabby instantly switches places with Maroon, and they grate their anchor and helm, forcing both Indeedee to cover their ears because of the sound that makes.

This gives Gabby time to land Hidden Power two consecutive times at Indy, my biggest threat at the moment, but Indy manages to block the third one with Protect, shielding him from the noise while Deedee manages to position herself and gathers the terrain's power to shoot a Terrain Pulse at Maroon to make them stop.

Deedee's next move is directed at Indy. She shoots another pulse attack, but this one heals him from the two super-effective hits he just took. She closes her eyes and both her's and Indy's horns start glowing until Indy casts a second Mystical Fire, which this time is a bigger and stronger fireball, which is aimed at Maroon.

Gabby switches places once again to take the hit and deal all the damage she's received so far back at Indy with Endeavor before recovering her health. Meanwhile, Maroon takes that opportunity to Wrap their helm around Deedee and then use Gyro Ball to launch her against Indy..

Maroon picks up Deedee once again, this time wrapping around her with their anchor to restrain her, slowly weakening and draining her health and drawing her closer.

Wally frowns and tries to think of a way to take Deedee safely out of that situation, but it's Indy the one that takes the initiative this time, running closer to where Maroon is to get into range with Ally Switch and switch places with Deedee.

"Indy, what are you-?"

Deedee looks at Indy and then looks back at Wally. The trainer nods and she does as well, making their horns glow once again.

I see how Indy's hands start forming a circle and the pink fire starts forming and instantly understand where this is going to.

"Maroon, get out of there!"

Gabby tries to switch places with Maroon, but Deedee comes at her with a Draining Kiss, which completely upsets her and interrupts her move.

"Shit-! Maroon, Giga Drain!"

Maroon tightens their grip around Indy, draining what little health he has left, and Indy grins the moment he launches his attack.

There's an explosion and the sound of Maroon's anchor falling is heard. The smoke disappears from the battlefield and Maroon and Indy let themselves be seen, the latter sitting on the floor.

"Can Indy keep battling?," asks Norman.

Deedee's horns glow, but Indy's don't. She shakes her head.

"Indy and Maroon can't keep battling! Both challengers have 3 pokémon left!"

Gabby looks at me with a sad face, probably feeling her reaction to Draining Kiss could've changed the final outcome. She's never been a fan of physical contact of any kind, honestly. I can just hear Hui's brother laugh at her.

"Don't worry. We'll look into that later."

"How much time has passed?" Wally chimes in.

Norman looks at his watch. "Three minutes." Wally nods, and blankly stares at the ground mumbling something to himself. "Wally."

"Hm?" He looks back at Norman, who just looks at him knitting an eyebrow. "Yeah, I know. I'm just thinking what would be better to send out now. They are good, I can be a bit more merciless this time, right?"

Norman sighs. "In the end it's up to you, just remember you're not participating in the League Tournament anymore. Both of you have your pokémon ready?"

Wally smiles, next pokéball in his hand. "Yes, Master Norman! Go, Sloane!"

"Bane boy, your turn!"

Three minutes. Gabby's Trick Room lasts up to five minutes, it's probably the same for Indy's Psychic Terrain.

Vigoroth is a fast pokémon, compared to the other members of its evolutionary line so I still have the advantage now. If I manage to set up on Curse enough times, this should be easy.

"Let's start with some set-up! Sloane, Focus Energy!"

"Bane, set-up as well with Curse!"

While both pokémon concentrate on gaining more power, Deedee starts charging towards Jo's side of the field, zig-zagging between Bane and Gabby's lines. Sloane charges against Bane later on, with its claws gaining a dark colour, with clumsy movement for each step, due to how Trick Room is affecting its mobility.

A direct attack without any kind of speed control? He must be kidding.

"Bane, Iron Head! Gabby, distance yourself from Deedee and use Hidden Power!"

Gabby moves to her right and Deedee follows her, while at the other side, Bane starts charging forward at full speed, lowering his head to smash the Vigoroth at full force.

When Bane starts getting close enough, Sloane once of its arms to catapult itself against Bane, rapidly spinning both arms before being teleported to Deedee's place.

Sloane takes a direct attack from Gabby's Hidden Power, but it still manages to sneak a Night Slash at her that didn't weaken her too much just because Hidden Power pushed it away for it to damage her just with the point of its claws. Still, that attack did a lot of damage to Gabby.

Sloane has trouble getting up, which gives enough time to Gabby to deal damage with Endeavor, except that the damage received by Sloane doesn't seem to be too much. In fact, Gabby seems to have gotten a bit more of health back. I'm pretty sure that's what Pain Split does. Gabby still Recovers the rest of her health.

Sloane finally gets on its knees and tries to swing another Night Slash at Gabby, except that that hit is taken by Bane's Protect, who then uses Iron Head to push her down again before using Mud Slap to blind her for a while.

"We got that one! Gabby, Hidden Power! Bane, Iron Head again!"

Both attacks are directed at Sloane, but it's actually Deedee who takes them, putting the Vigoroth on a safe spot and managing to use Healing Pulse on it before falling to those attacks.

"Deedee can't keep battling! Leader Wally has only two pokémon left!"

"Sorry to break it to you, but I need her to be able to battle for now," Wally says. "We've been at it for two minutes, right, Master Norman?"

Norman takes a look at his watch again and then nods at him.

"Great, I don't have to worry about the terrain now," he snickers, his final pokéball in hand. "Go, Leon, show them what you got!"

Wally's final pokémon is a Kecleon. I've heard about those, but not much outside of their ability to change their typing after getting hit.

As soon as Norman tells us to keep battling, Sloane pounces at Gabby. Her mobility increased by a lot now that Trick Room is now and right now she's the most dangerous now. She's still having trouble seeing, though, so after missing her first attempt to attack her, she stops to rub her eyes.

"Gabby, start charging for Trick Room."

Before Gabby starts gathering power, Sloane jumps back at her with another Night Slash, forcing her to use Ally Switch instead so Bane could block her attack with Protect.

Leon keeps its distance and the only thing that happens from its side is that its eyes flashes, but I can't identify the move it just used and can't take a look at it with Sloane attacking incessantly at Bane until she gets to break his barrier and strikes him with Shadow Claw this time. Leon's eyes flash again after that.

Sloane jumps over Bane and pounces at Gabby once again with Shadow Claw, while she's finishing charging psychic energy for her second Trick Room, forcing her once again to use Ally Switch before unleashing that energy.

Bane takes the hit from Sloane and also a Shadow Sneak from Leon before distancing itself once again with the same move to stay out of range.

'Priority once again, really?,' are my thoughts. At least Trick Room is up now. Sloane's movements become clumsy again and give space to another attack Psyshock from Gabby, which she doesn't bother dodging. But Leon's Shadow Sneak is a problem. I have to be faster.

"Bane, use Curse again, then attack Leon with Iron Head!"

Bane barks in agreement and begins setting up, but the Kecleon suddenly changing its color to a light purple and instantly going back to green catches my attention. Next thing I see is Bane's fallen on the ground.

"Bane can't keep battling! Challenger Jordie has two pokémon left!"

"W-wait, what!? What did you do!?" I quickly take a look at my pokédex to find my answer. Bane's summary. Type: Ghost

"Skill Swap," Wally answers. "It's a bit of a gimmick, but it's quite effective."

Leon's color shifts to light purple once again and then goes back to normal.

"That move came with a small price, though. I would have hoped that Curse wasn't aimed at anything, but it seems it got Leon. He's taking Curse damage now."

I can't believe it. He really baited me to use Curse. Is that the skill of a trainer worth his name in the Hall of Fame? Am I going to lose?
Gabby forgot Endeavor and learned Pain Split!

Chapter 3: Part 9 - vs. Wally, Part 2
15:07 - 15:12 Petalburg Gym
Spoiler:

Neon is my last pokémon, and it all goes down to how much I'm able to do with his almost nonexistent mobility.

It's hard to think straight when I just got caught off guard like this, though. Wally might not look like much, he looks like a kid, but he's my most dangerous opponent so far after Hui's brother.

"Um, are you okay?," asks Wally. "Didn't mean to demotivate you with that play. I can-"

"Don't you dare go easy on me! I'm just thinking. I still hold the speed advantage here, I'm not going to lose."

"I mean I just say because you've been looking at nothing for a while. Something wrong?"

'Well I have the reminiscence of my last battle and my parents telling me I wasn't ready to take the challenge in a different region… and yesterday's chat with Andrea… why is that even relevant now?'

"... No, nothing. I'm fine."

Leon's color changes once again.

Norman chimes in clearing his throat. "Challenger, in the light of one of your opponent's pokémon being afflicted by a deteriorating status condition, I'll ask you to send out your next pokémon right now!"

"Y-yeah, right. Sorry, didn't mean to…" I pick Neon's duskball. "We can do this, Neon. I'm counting on you."

Leon's eyes flash once again as soon as Neon touches the ground.

If the flash in Leon's eyes is what Skill Swap looks like, then he used that move exactly two times before Bane fainted. The first time was to give the Ghost type to Bane, and the second one… Gabby still has her ability, otherwise Leon wouldn't be taking Curse damage. Sloane has no reason to use Rock Head, so it makes sense Bane got his ability back.

That means Leon gave Color Change to one of my pokémon again.

The question at hand is what pokémon did he give it to. Wally would benefit with both Neon's Static or Gabby's Magic Guard, either to make it more easy for him to take speed control with paralysis or to negate Curse damage.

Trick Room is now up, and Sloane is the most affected by it. As annoying as Leon is, he's not the strongest pokémon in this battlefield, Sloane is, not to mention Wally would rather have Neon with Color Change over Gabby, since Gabby takes super effective attacks from Night Slash and Shadow Claw anyways.

It's in Wally's best interest to slow Sloane down.

"Leon, Shadow Sneak!"

"That won't work this time. Neon, Camouflage!"

Leon manages to strike Neon with Shadow Sneak, but he mixes himself with the terrain and changes his typing to Normal when Sloane leaps at him to attack with Shadow Claw, effectively making himself immune.

Sloane tilts her head and grunts confused the moment Neon sticks his tongue at her before exploding a Mud Bomb on her face, making her back off away from him and blinding her once again.

Leon distances himself from Neon with Shadow Sneak to dodge a Mud Bomb directed at him too and shoots a Psybeam at him to change his typing again, but Gabby switches places with him and counters with Psyshock.

Leon takes Curse damage so Wally has him use Skill Swap again, this time on Gabby.

"Magic Guard, nice!," Wally cheers, looking at the pokédex in his hand.

Leon then approaches Gabby with Shadow Sneak and gets electrocuted upon touch, falling on his back but being able to dodge her next attack with ease despite all that.

Despite her current condition, Sloane keeps fighting, desperately aiming her attacks at random, but swinging her arms with great strength. Her attacks are mostly aimed at Gabby, but she is able to dodge her moves with no problem, despite Leon's various attempts at slowing her down.

At one point, Leon catches Gabby, jumping at her from her own shadow, giving Sloane a chance to hit her, but Neon draws her back with another Mud Bomb, and then Gabby pushes Leon away with Psyshock.

"Gabby, Recover!"

Gabby tries to get her health back, but is interrupted by Leon jumping at her again with Shadow Sneak, this time also using Skill Swap, before jumping away from her, aiming to where Sloane is.

Sloane leaps at Gabby, touching Leon with her claws in the way and misses the attack after falling due to the electric shock.

Leon takes Curse damage while he's on the ground and uses Skill Swap after getting up.

Gabby starts going back to my side of the field, being followed by Sloane who managed to hit her once despite her still being slightly slower than her.

Sloane pounces at her, ready to land another blow, but takes a direct hit from Neon's Thundershock, sending her back to Wally's side of the field.

"Gabby, get ready to use Trick Room once again."

Wally tsks and shakes his head. He nods at Sloane, who maliciously grins at Gabby before grunting at her and opening her arms, showing off her chest and claws at her. Gabby shakes her head and backs off, getting closer to where I am. The only thing she's able to do when Sloane starts getting closer at a higher speed is shoot another Psyshock at her.

With Gabby being unable to trigger another Ally Switch to have Neon block Sloane's and Leon's ghost-type attacks, she becomes an easy target. Under Trick Room, she's still faster than Sloane, but the Vigoroth's now increased mobility makes her really dangerous with Leon bugging the hell out of Gabby with Shadow Sneak after Shadow Sneak.

Gabby tries to defend herself from Sloane using Psyshock once more. She's quick to get back on her two feet, though and pounces at Gabby, preparing her death blow.

Sloane's paralysis disables her leg's movement and has her lose her balance middair, but she's very quick to retaliate, building up momentum with her arm, and maneuvering against her to crush her with both claws, dealing enough damage to leave her out of combat.

"Gabby can't keep battling! Challenger Jordie has only one pokémon left!"

"Dammit! Those fucking priority moves!"

I'm between the wall and the edge of the sword. Leon isn't taking Curse damage anymore, so I can ask for some time to breathe and think!

Right now, Neon is immune to most of Leon and Sloane's attacks combined, and I don't have to worry about Leon using Skill Swap again, there's no reason for Wally not to stick to Magic Guard.

Which means I have to use Neon's Camouflage in a clever way. As long as he has that, he's safe.

Sloane is tired, she's panting too much from moving around incessantly. She might as well fall soon, which is good for me, because she's the most dangerous pokémon here now.

Without Gabby here to take Trick Room down, Neon is the slowest pokémon in the battlefield, so I have to battle doing what Neon does best: Defend.

"Neon, hide yourself with Camouflage!"

The Stunfisk blinks while looking at me -I'll take that as a nod- and starts to become invisible using said move. Of course, now he has to focus on doing that while moving around slowly. Wally knows that -Kecleon use a similar stealth mechanism-, which means that he knows that unless Neon is using a different move, he won't stop hiding.

Wally nods at Sloane, who carefully scans the battlefield until she senses some movement not too far from the spot in which Neon was positioned earlier. She starts to taunt him the same way she tried taunting Gabby, and that's exactly what I wanted.

"Now! Mud Bomb!"

Neon's attack is, like always, directed at Sloane's eyes. It takes her by surprise, and unable to see anything at all for the third time in this entire battle, she gives in to desperation again.

"Sloane, calm down," Wally calls, but it's useless, the Vigoroth is already attacking at random, slamming her claws against the ground, trying to look for Neon with no results.

"Right here!" Neon starts spouting mud out of his mouth, which covers the entire area around him, giving away his current location. It's counterproductive because it also falls on him, so turning invisible becomes useless, but it doesn't matter anymore. I won.

Sloane obviously goes to where she sees Neon. Neon backs off with a single jump to get out of reach, which forces the Vigoroth to go inside the muddy area, slipping with the mud covered floor and leaving her vulnerable for Neon's final attack.

"Thundershock!"

She's too tired, and with the slippery floor and paralysis impeding her movement, Sloane is unable to do anything to dodge being zapped by Neon's attack. And while Thundershock was weakened because Sloane was covered in mud, it's still enough to take her down.

"Sloane can't keep battling! Leader Wally has only one pokémon left!"

At this moment, the tension can be felt in the air. Just until now, everyone was cheering for Wally, but now almost the entire crowd has gone quiet and they are just waiting for the conclusion of this battle. Both of us are at our last pokémon, and both of us have the same chance of winning.

Neon is tired, moving is not his strongest suit, even if he doesn't do it continuously and just at small distances. On the other hand, Leon is paralysed, which yes, gives him more mobility in the case of Trick Room, but also makes him unable to move at all whenever that paralysis kicks in.

I look at my XT. Wally and I have almost been battling for ten minutes, so Leon's advantage in mobility is almost at its end.

Leon shoots rings of psychic energy at Neon, changing his color to pink before returning to normal with Camouflage, time Leon takes to get closer to Neon with the help of Shadow Sneak. When Leon leaves his hiding spot, he is welcomed with a Mud Bomb from Neon, which blinds the Kecleon too much for him to be able use long-ranged attacks efficiently, forcing him to get closer.

Leon shoots a Psybeam at close range and immediately proceeds to use Shadow Sneak on Neon, who, unable to move away and dodge, stomps the ground with his tail, causing it to shake violently as rocky blades come out of the ground.

This forces Leon to interrupt his attack, using Shadow Sneak not to attack but to dodge what otherwise would be a fatal blow on him.

Leon jumps out of the ground to dodge and dives once again under his own shadow, this time using his speed to move around Neon and find a weak spot to attack.

Neon begins charging electricity and shoots random Thundershocks at the shadow, but Leon has no trouble dodging all of his attacks.

Neon starts becoming more upset at having his attacks dodged that after charging enough power for a final attack he stomps the ground with his tail once again. This time not to use Fissure, but to Discharge all of that electricity with that shockwave.

This doesn't help with having Leon leave his hiding spot, but it sure causes a reaction on Wally.

At his command, Leon's rushes to the mud puddle and leaves his hidden spot to use Camouflage there to become a ground type. This makes him immune to Neon's Discharge, and puts him close enough to use Shadow Claw on him.

"Neon, Camouflage!"

Neon changes color and becomes immune to Leon's attack again allowing him to hit him with Mud Bomb once again.

Leon gets startled and shakes his head after being hit and tries to clean his eyes, giving Neon an opening to stomp the ground again, this time to finish him off with Fissure.

"Leon can't keep battling! Leader Wally can't keep battling, so Challenger Jordie is the winner!"

"Oh, damn!" Wally complains, bringing Leon back to his pokéball and breathing heavily. Well, it doesn't seem like a complaint, he's actually smiling a bit. "Congratulations, Jordie. That was fun."

"Th-thanks… for a moment I thought…"

"Yeah, I thought so too. But I guess you're just better, I don't know." He looks at Norman, who's just standing there with a badge and a TM Case in hand. "Oh, right! For beating the Gym Leader of Petalburg Gym, you have earned the Balance Badge. As an additional prize, you also get a TM for a status move any of my pokémon can use, even those I didn't use for this battle. There's Coil, Skill Swap, Focus Energy, Tau-"

"Psychic Terrain."

"What?"

"I want Psychic Terrain. One of your Indeedee had that, didn't they?"

"Uhh, no. Psychic Terrain was just set as Indy's ability, Psychic Surge. I don't use the move myself, so I don't have it."

"Not even as a backup for that ability?" He shakes his head. "Well, shit. I'll take Protect, then… although… Psycho Shift… nah, Protect is good."

"Sure!," Wally says, looking into the case for that disk. "Here you go… uhh… congrats on winning, I guess."

"Thanks!" I start making my way outside the battlefield, looking at my new badge before putting it in its case, but something stops me. I have more questions to ask.

"Umm… Leader Wally?"

"Oh? Did I give you the wrong TM?"

"No, the TM is fine. I just wanted to ask you something," I say. "I know a few things about you. For example, that you fled home without telling anyone to go on your journey."

Wally instantly knows where I'm coming from.

"The only person I didn't tell anyone about what I was doing was my father."

"But he eventually found out, didn't he?"

"When I got my name in the Hall of Fame, yes." He smiles. "He was pissed, but he was worried more than anything... He always thought I needed to be protected from the outside world because of my health problems, as much as my mom tried to convince him otherwise."

"Did you ever regret leaving him in the dark?"

"No, I didn't." No hesitation in that answer and he doesn't elaborate either.

"I see… Thanks for the answer." I nod and turn around.

"If I can give you some advice…," he adds. "This journey and what you achieve with it is yours. Some people might not like the path you take, and that's okay, not everyone can understand, but there will always be people that will support your decision no matter what, and having them close to you is the best thing you can do. I had my family in Verdanturf and my mom to support me, I don't know about you."

The first person that comes into my mind is my brother, and what Andrea told me yesterday echoes in my head: I should be thanking him for his support.

And for going against my parents during the whole Hoenn journey debacle too.

"Maybe… I think I have someone," I say with a smile. Wally smiles back and Norman nods at him. "Thanks for the advice."
Neon forgot Thundershock and learned Discharge!

Mauport Bridge

Mauport Bridge is even prettier in the day. Or maybe it's exactly as pretty, just in a different way. Without all the lights, the buildings themselves are more plain, but that just makes all the art stand out that much more! Tsu has to stop herself from taking pictures of every cool piece she sees, reminding herself to keep it personal.

She'd arrived shortly after sundown last night, and had immediately been attacked by a saleswoman offering her a bicycle. It was tempting, but sadly outside of her price range, especially since she had to pay for a room for the night. She'd had enough to cover it, barely, but that had led to a whole other conversation…

She shakes her head, not wanting to dwell on that. Long story short, she's ₽4000 in debt again, this time to Aunt Nyamo, but at least she has some spending money now.

So naturally she immediately went back for the bike first thing in the morning.

She regrets nothing, and even though the basket could hold a Pokémon, the only one she has that would fit is Riptide, and wrangling him would be a tall order. So instead, Shiny is keeping pace beside her, enjoying the opportunity to trot without leaving Tsu behind.

"So, where should we go first?" Tsu asks Shiny. "Should we find a shop, a restaurant, or an activity? I'd like to try something local, and I don't want to carry a bunch of extra stuff, so I'm thinking restaurant."

Shiny snorts, tossing her head.

"Yeah, I guess you're right. We did just have breakfast. Let's see what people do for fun around here! Look for someone friendly, we can ask around while we browse."

Riding her bike inside the market area is apparently a faux pas, so Tsu climbs off before looking at the stalls. It takes her a minute to figure out how to fold it up, but she figures it out. Shiny presses her head against Tsu's side as soon as she's finished putting the bike away.

"Oof… you see something you like?" She follows Shiny's gaze to a tall tree a distance away. It moves oddly, not like the wind is blowing it, but like it's alive. She peers closer, realizing it's a Pokémon! "Wait, is that an Exeggutor? I've never seen one so tall before! Come on, let's go check it out!"

Apparently she's not the only one who's noticed the Alolan Exeggutor, as a small group of people have gathered around it. Still, some people are leaving, and a few of them are holding flyers. If this is an advertisement, then it's an effective one. She gets closer, wondering what they're selling, and sees two girls by Exeggutor's side, one handing out the flyers and the other dressed in a mascot costume.

Two girls she happens to recognize.

"Come visit Bell's Berries, locally sourced and fresh picked! Located at Southside Market, just past Rydel's Cycles!" Sunny Dey calls out from inside the Pinap Berry costume, while Marie Rachelle Mocinno gives out the physical advertisements.

Tsu stares, not entirely sure what she's experiencing right now. Confusion and curiosity for sure, along with excitement and amusement, with just a hint of trepidation. For better or worse, she considers these two her friends, but maybe she shouldn't approach them while they're working? Not to mention, the last time she'd seen either of them had been very emotionally charged.

The decision is taken from her when Marie spots her in the crowd and waves her stack of flyers. "Natsuko! My favorite girl! Come visit for a moment, will you?"

Sunny looks over at Marie in surprise, then over to Tsu. Her eyes widen and her face turns a little red, and she completely forgets to advertise for a moment.

Tsu grins a little. Now she has to go over. "Hey girls! Didn't expect to see you two here. It's been a while, how are you?"

"Well it's a lovely day, I'm handing out flyers, and Sunny is a Pinap berry. I'm having a great time!" Marie tugs Tsu into a one-armed hug, stack of flyers smacking her gently in the cheek as the taller girl's other hand passes one off to a bystander. "How's the rich girl life?"

"Ha ha… I wouldn't know!" Tsu slips free of the hug, hiding her eyes with her hat. "Turns out I'm not very responsible with my money when I have it."

"You out of money, too?" Sunny speaks up, looking grumpy as usual. "You want a turn in this suit? They pay you."

"You have to be at least as sour and spicy as its current occupant to pull it off, though," Marie stage-whispers.

"Oh. Then that won't work, I'm too sweet." Tsu clasps her hands by her cheek and flutters her eyelashes in a display of mock innocence.

Sunny rolls her eyes in disgust at both of them. "I hate you both."

Tsu laughs, knowing she doesn't mean that. "Where are you advertising? I want to look it up on my phone…" She holds her phone up, pretending to pull up a search engine, but actually going to her camera. A picture of Sunny in that costume will be sweet payback for that video of Stacy almost eating me.

"It's a berry stand back near the start of the bridge, called Bell's. You can't miss it." Sunny points in that direction, and Tsu takes a picture when she looks back toward the camera. "Hey! Was that a camera click? Delete that!"

"Oh, good idea! Let me get a photo!" Tsu slides up between Marie and Sunny, trying to fit all three of them into frame. Sunny doesn't make it easy, but she's not saying no, either. A fourth, fifth, and sixth face appear relatively in-shot as Tsu clicks the button- the grinning Exeggutor hums excitedly to see itself appear on the screen.

"Cutie! Sneaky boy!" Marie laughs, patting one of its cheeks.

Tsu puts a hand on Cutie's trunk, grinning at his photo bombing antics. "He just wanted to be in the photo! More than the other plant type here!" She playfully jostles Sunny, who swats at her hand.

"I'm never living this down, am I?" Sunny shakes her head, but still smiles a little. Maybe Tsu and Marie's playful energy is infectious?

"To be honest, I probably wouldn't have come over here if we hadn't seen him. He's great for drawing attention to yourselves, I had no idea it was you two! Actually, I would never have expected to see you two together, at least without Ed. Is he here too?"

"No, he's…" Marie backs up a few paces to peer over the rails. Sunny follows, awkwardly tilting her whole body in her costume, while Tsu follows more warily. "Down there."

Sunny sighs at the green expanse below, turning to lean her back against the rails. "He could be anywhere, really. He could be right below us and we wouldn't even see him."

The wind gusts up and Marie's hair smacks her in the face. Tsu peers over the edge herself, trying to test that theory, but of course she doesn't see anyone. "Huh. Neat. But he's always been… you know, kind of weird, he's probably having fun down there. But there's fun stuff up here, too! What are you girls doing today?"

"This," Marie shakes her bouncy hair out of her eyes and goes back to handing out flyers. "Potentially something else with similarities to this, those similarities being: getting paid. We have to work when we're broke, don't we? It's what trainers do."

"I suppose it is…" Tsu nods sagely, thinking back to the odd jobs she'd done before and after her disastrous debut that had put her so deep in debt. Sunny had tried to fast track her with Gym Battles and Contest victories, but at the end of the day, hard work and perseverance had literally paid off. "I think that's what I'll do today, then. I'm going to go find a job of my own!"

"Good luck! There are a lot of weird ones around here, we had to choose carefully," Marie says, as if Sunny isn't dressed as a giant berry.

"Thanks, you too! Maybe we could go do something later! Give me a call or…" Tsu thinks about it, pulling out her phone again. "I don't have your number, why don't I have your number?"

"Because you left in such a hurry last time we were together, remember?" Marie's cheeky wink reminds Tsu of why she'd left, and she ducks her head to look at her phone again.

"Ha, right! I did that… I was just, you know, I felt like I could have, well, you know. What's your number?"

Sunny looks between the two in confusion, but Tsu doesn't elaborate and Marie keeps that knowing grin in place as she recites her phone number.

Tsu types it in, and after a moment Marie's phone chimes. "Just sending you a text, so you have mine as well. I'll talk to you later! Byeeee!"

She waves as she walks away, leaving her friends to their job, but glad she got to see them. Marie is right, she should find a job to help get her out of the hole she's dug for herself.

But first, she wants to go look at that jutting out section of bridge over there. Who knows what that's for!

As it turns out, it's a nice little rest area. Some benches, some garden plots, even a fountain. And it looks out over the water, which is always a nice… is that woman fishing?

"Hi. Nice day, huh?" Tsu casually slides up to the woman, looking down at the water. Are there fish down there? Maybe treasure? There's a mansion of some kind down there, Tsu vaguely recalls passing it when she split off from Sam.

"Yes, it is. Though it might get a bit windy later." The woman returns the greeting, but is otherwise focused on fishing.

"Right. Wind." Tsu is not good at small talk. "Hey, is that your fishing rod, or is there a place where you can rent one around here?"

"It's mine. Not many places to fish here in Mauport, so no one would make money loaning out rods. This here is pretty much the best spot, trust me."

Tsu curses under her breath, really wishing she could just buy a fishing rod of her own already. She wonders where she could get one, but her thoughts are interrupted by a rod being shoved in her face.

The woman smiles knowingly, offering Tsu her rod. "You like to fish? Go ahead and take a few casts. It'll give me a chance to rest."

"You mean it? Oh, thank you!" Tsu drops her pack, jumping as it clatters to the ground. She'd forgotten about her rental bike. Shiny sniffs at it, her soft nickering sounding like laughter.

The woman laughs too. "Excited, are we? Here, I have some bait over here…"

"No need!" Tsu tosses the naked hook into the water, hoping for treasure like Marie had fished up at the point. She'd taken the bobber off, so the hook sinks into the water. She wonders if she should have put a weight on it to help it sink further.

"Okay… and you've done this before?"

"Lots of times, sure."

"So… you know you're not likely to catch anything without bait, right?"

"I'm hoping I get lucky, I guess." Tsu slowly reels the hook in, hoping to snag something. Marie was probably exceptionally lucky when she fished up a gold nugget, but Sunny managed to fish up some rare Poké Balls, and that would be good too. "I'm not looking for Pokémon, I'm trying to see if I can pull up sunken treasure."

The fisherwoman actually laughs, clapping a hand on Tsu's shoulder. "Good luck with that! The tides tend to sweep everything onto the shore, or leave them behind in the pools when they go back out. There's a lot of lost items down there, but if you're looking for treasure you're better off going below and looking by hand."

"Oh…" Tsu feels very silly. Fishing is a lot like gambling, but in this case the deck is stacked against her if she's hoping for a big payout.

"Bring that hook back up, we'll get you kitted up so you can catch something proper. Lot of different kinds down there by the Trick House, you never know what you're gonna get."

"What's the Trick House?" Tsu starts reeling the hook in, but it catches on something. She jerks the rod sharply, and hears a *pop* from below as something tugs at the line. She pulls harder, reeling the line in. There's definitely some weight at the end now. "Hey, I think I caught something!"

With some effort, she reels in the line until she can see what's caught on her hook. It looks like a deflated beach ball. It must have gotten caught on her hook and popped. She reels it in with much less enthusiasm, but stops when she sees the bottom. There's a Pokémon clinging to the ball! It's some kind of dog-faced seal or something, and it clings to the ball with a look of fear and regret in its eyes.

"Hey! That's a Popplio! Good catch, kid!" The woman helps Tsu pull it up, rather than just leave it dangling over the side.

Popplio lands on the bridge with a sigh of relief, then sadly puts a flipper on the deflated ball. Her eyes trace the line back to the rod in Tsu's hands, then narrow into an accusatory glare. She barks at Tsu angrily, smacking the ruined beach ball for emphasis.

"Um… here, this is yours." Tsu hands the rod back to the fisherwoman, who accepts it with stunned confusion. "I think I should go now, bye!"

Popplio isn't having it, and jumps in front of Tsu. She barks again, gesturing to the beach ball, then whimpers as she mimes something being lifted.

Tsu can't look Popplio in the eye, starting straight ahead with a guilty conscience. "...yeah, okay. That's on me. You could have let go, though."

Popplio barks again, pointing to the- to her popped ball.

"I guess I do owe you a new one… fine, let's go." She picks up her backpack, unfolding the rental bike and gesturing to the basket. "Hop in, we'll go look for a vendor."

Popplio looks at Tsu warily, then raises her flippers, demanding to be picked up.

"You can't be serious…" Tsu mutters, but does as the Water type asks, placing her in the basket. She rolls her eyes at the amused fisherwoman, offering her a wave. "Thanks for letting me borrow your rod! I guess I have to go deal with the consequences of my actions now."

Popplio barks impatiently, and Tsu gets on the bike and heads back toward the market at the entrance to the bridge.

Thursday, October 1st @ 1100 - Littledale

Here Clint was, at the Littledale Gym. Situated in the middle of town, nice and easy to locate fortunately. The gym itself was styled like a barn, just happened to be in better condition than any barn Clint had seen before. Clint looked around, noticed the place itself was pretty quiet. Clint walked up to the building, and slid one of the big barn doors open.

The place looked abandoned, like no one had used the gym for anything. The place was kept clean, but you could see a thin layer of dust covering everything. Clint couldn't help but be confused by this. Sure the leader's weren't going to be there 24/7, but at least it should look like its been battled in recently. Clint heard someone behind him, which caused Clint to do a one-eighty and place his hand on his holster. An older woman, who looked like a farmer, was there to greet Clint,

"Merry ain't here friend, they're out working."

Well this was unfortunate, Clint didn't want to do anymore waiting then was necessary. Clint quickly mulled over his options, either wait around or go find this gym leader. neither one guaranteed any success.

"Any idea where I might go looking for Merry," Clint asked.

"Could be anywhere, they're very busy. I can let them know you're looking for them If I see Merry first, what's your name kiddo," the woman replied.

"Clint. Shaw."

With that, Clint headed out, determined to find Merry on his own as opposed to waiting around.

Thursday, October 1st @ 1600 - Littledale

After a few unsuccessful hours of aimless walking around town looking for Merry Richtide, Clint figured he'd enlist the help of someone with a little more familiarity with the region. Luckily for Clint, Sergei had just finished his work for the day and agreed to help Clint, only condition was that Clint would have to put on a show in battle. Easy price to pay for a little help. Sergei had brought Clint to a saloon, which apparently a cousin of Merry's owned, and Merry stopped by at sometimes. Clint and Sergei walked in together, and took a quick look around the room. No Merry, just a few people sitting around tables relaxing after a day's work. The two walked up to the bar, and took a seat. Sergei ordered two shots of whiskey, which caused the bartender to ask if Clint was old enough to be in there. Sergei said don't worry about it, so the bartender shrugged his shoulders and poured the drinks.

"I can tell you're all jittery, take this and calm down," Sergei suggested.

Sergei was right in that Clint was a little on edge, but he wasn't sure that Sergei's suggestion on how to fix it was the right one. But heck, it was a fool's idea to turn down free booze so Clint took the shot.

"So what's the plan Sergei, wait here until Merry shows up, while you get drunk," Clint teased.

"Hmmpf, you wanted my help kid, let me do my thing," Sergei replied, ordering just himself a second shot,

"What, you got something to do today, I don't."

Clint was a little annoyed, but he had hitched his wagon to Sergei, best to sit back and see what he comes up with. When the bartender came over, Sergei asked him if he had seen Merry at all recently. The bartender mentioned that Merry had been by earlier to drop some supplies off, but not much more than that. Apparently they were behind on their farm work due to a string of gym challengers in the past few days, and so now Merry has been working around the clock to catch up. So either Merry was worn out from a series of battles, or their skills were sharpened from some recent practice.

The bartender also let them know that the Richtide's had been restoring an old abandoned section of farmland, trying to get it going again. This seemed as good of a place as any to search. Clint thanked the bartender, and Clint and Sergei left the saloon, on to search this old farm.

Thursday, October 1st @ 1800 - Littledale

The sun was setting on the sleepy farm town of Littledale, yet Clint still found himself in some farmer's field. Clint and Sergei split up to cover more ground, yet stayed in earshot of each other in case they found something, or someone. Clint's search brought him to an old barn, not completely dilapidated but for sure needed some work. Speaking of needing some work, Clint could hear someone inside, swinging a hammer. Had to be the person he was looking for. He called over Sergei, who slowly started to make his way over. Clint climbed the wooden fence for the pen that had been built by the front door of the barn, his feet scraping the dusty ground as he dismounted from the fence. Did he feel a bit nervous? Yes, and the fact that the commotion inside didn't stop certainly wasn't helping, but a few slow breaths in and out and Clint continued closer to the door, but not too close. Clint paused for a second to muster up the courage, then shouted,

"MERRY RICHTIDE!"

The noises in the barn ceased, and the barn doors swung wide open. Standing in the doorway was a figure shorter than Clint, but a lot stronger looking. Due to the lighting of the situation, Clint couldn't get a clear look at their face.

"Howdy partner," Merry started off, with a slow drawl,

"You lost or something kid, what ya doin' out in these parts?"

"Think you know why I'm out here. Looking for a gym badge, and I wasn't gonna' sit around and wait for it," Clint replied.

"That was my first guess, heard there was an enthusiastic trainer looking for me. In that case, I'm Merry Richtide, Littledale's Gym Leader, its they/them by the way, I know how you Winston boys like to mess that up," Merry introduced themselves.

"I ain't nobody's boy, since we're in the business of clearing things up," Clint snapped back.

Clint and Merry stared each other down as they moved into position on opposite sides of the pen.

"Fair enough kid, here's my rules. Four rounds, one on one rounds, three rounds to win, ties go to me, the leader," Merry explained,

"Speaking of rules friend, we need a ref, doubt we're going to find one all the way out here."

"Don't worry Merry, the kid's got a ref with him," Sergei said, as he entered the pen, standing at the edge.

"Sergei? Long time no see, what brings you out 'round here with this kid," Merry said, shocked as could be.

"The love of the sport never leaves you Merry, you should know that," Sergei answers.

Merry nods in agreement with Sergei,

"Enough of the chit-chat, let's get this over with."

Spoiler:

The two trainers squared off, way out of the way of the crowds that formed around other challenges, just two trainers, and their respective parties. The sun overlooking them was steadily disappearing behind the horizon, adding an additional air of intensity to the match. Clint was the one to break the staredown, sending out Grovyle as his first combatant, while Merry matched that with a Tauros. Clint's dealt with enough of those over the last couple of days, what's one more?

Tauros began the festivites by charging directly at Grovyle with a Horn Attack, which Grovyle avoided with Detect, dodging the Tauros like she was a Matador. Tauros turned his head to look at the Grovyle he missed, who was giving him a funny look. Grovyle then replied with a Quick Attack, striking the Tauros in the shoulder, causing the Tauros to stutter step slightly, but not a whole lot of damage was done. Grovyle jumped over Tauros following the attack and landed over near the fence.

Tauros, only slightly disturbed by the quick attack, turned around to face Grovyle, and dug at the dirt with his hoof. Then, the top of Tauros' head, including his horns, were covered with a white aura before charging directly at Grovyle, slamming into her and taking the two of them for the fence.

"Dang it, gon' have to fix that later," Merry complained.

Grovyle retaliated with Assurance, striking back at Tauros while surrounded by a dark energy, this attack being enough to knock Tauros back into the fenced in pen. Grovyle then followed back in, perching on top of a fence post while Tauros stared her down, his tails waving about wildly.

Grovyle made the next move, starting off with a solid kick to the jaw, followed by another one to Tauros' chest to complete the double kick, sending Tauros upright and tipped over. Tauros was still able to get up without too much trouble, simply rolling over and rising back up did the trick. Tauros lined up for another Horn Attack, but before he was able to build momentum Grovyle charged in first with a quick attack, knocking Tauros down, the bull pokemon skidding off to the side past Grovyle. Tauros then got back up, despite appearing to be fatigued, and prepared another attack.

Tauros used Wild Charge, covering himself in an electrical field and charging right at Grovyle, hitting her and launching her into the barn doors. Grovyle sat up against the doors, clearly in pain from that attack. Standing in front of her ready to charge again was Tauros, digging into the ground with his hooves, panting heavily. Grovyle made the first move, landing another double kick on Tauros, and this seemed to be the one to seal the first round win, as after Tauros laid on the ground, clearly having difficulty getting back up. Merry put their hands on their hips, huffed and recalled Tauros back into his Pokeball.

"Tauros is unable to continue battling, round one goes to the Challenger," Sergei explained,

"Trainers ready up your Pokemon for round two."

Sure, Clint had taken the first round, but nothing was guaranteed at this point, he wasn't in the clear yet.

Painful Surrender
Saturday, October 3rd - noon - Mauport Bridge

I have officially surrendered to Hikaru. What else could I have done? What else could I have failed at?

I can't say I didn't try, either, because I tried to get back that Mawilite twice: playing by the rules, and breaking them blatantly. I can't say I didn't care enough, because I sure do care about that little promise I made with Venus. Perhaps even more now that she's no longer by my side - who knows how it's going over in Littledale…

But now - I talk to myself as I grab my bike and follow Hikaru - now, I have to look forward.

What I see is just more time in the company, or maybe in the shade, of this quirky figure. But that's fine, right? When they discovered I left Mawile behind they were clearly annoyed, but I can't believe they would outright forget I essentially saved their life back in Dewford Cave. That's right actually, I essentially saved their life…! They must have at least some amount of gratitude for that. Possibly some admiration too. Maybe this is why they're still giving me a chance. Maybe this is why they said… "this is my way to help you out".

Or maybe… they really are making the best of the situation to just use me again. They're making me think I still have a chance to get that stone, and that's now the carrot they dangle in front of my eyes, so that I can keep working for them… at their own pace.

At first, I keep my distance from them. We bike onwards towards Mauville, mostly keeping to the center of the bridge so that it's easier to dodge people on foot who are just looking at the various shops and amenities. Some Taillow fly over our heads or behind us, chirping loudly but never really scaring off Poppy, who in turn looks at the world around her from under her blanket (my bandana). Hikaru looks back a few times, crossing their eyes with mine, but that's as far as we go.

See, I don't think they're done with me. They probably need me around more. Or maybe they really think I'd be able to use that Mawilite to its full potential someday or another. But whatever it is, it should explain why they're looking back at me. Of course, that means I could very well get another chance to prove my worth as a trainer: and it's not just me, but my Pokémon too, who have to be ready.

That's why I try to spend my lunch with them by my side.

Poppy is just Poppy. We know each other, we love each other, we have fought together, me and her, just this morning and it proved once again that we're a good team, or… at least that she knows her stuff. She even got to use a new move I'd never seen! Petal Blizzard, if I got that correctly. Can't help but wonder if she did that just because she wanted to win that battle so badly but, regardless, I hope Hikaru can appreciate her commitment, at least.

Wisteria, from what I've noticed, is a carefree, happy prankster. He probably thought me and June were cute together or something and he just had to try and get our attention, didn't he? Luckily… I have no hard feelings. That's all in the past. I'm just not entirely sure if… if we'll become good friends in the end. We haven't battled much either, I just know he's useful to have because of Hypnosis and such.

Angie, or rather, Hydrangea… I wonder if I let her down, I kept wondering for a couple days now. I caught her after a rather exciting fight on the beach, after me and my friends Tsu and Jo baited her and two other Shellos to come out of their hiding spots… and then I don't let her fight as often, let alone fight to get more food. She's the one who'll need to get used to this, but I wonder if there's any way I can help her do this. Or even use her own personality to get what I want from each fight. For now, back in her Pokéball she goes.

And Thistle. Oh, I just need to check on her. She should be fully healed by now, it's just that there's no Pokémon Center that can validate that. Add to that the fact that she seems to be barely able to walk, even now… and I'm slightly worried. It's also true that I still don't know exactly all of her moves - or rather, how they work. But… I guess I'll get there. For now, she gets a few more nudges on that soft wool of hers.

Hikaru makes some comments on my Pokémon while I munch my food. They're a quirky group for sure, they say. They're quite diverse, they say. They mention how Rei is much like their own version of Poppy, but they haven't really connected that well with the rest of their team because battling and training is a big part of their interactions. I shrug at that, not sure if there's any way I can help them with. It's not like I'm that good at understanding my own Pokémon either, uh?

If I look straight west from where I am I can see the railing of the bridge. Then, there's the sea, the coastline with that dense forest… and what I can only assume is the Trick House barely visible on the side. Maybe if I went right up against the railing, I could see it better. Oh, but what I'm immediately reminded of is what's way beyond that forest, ironically. That would be Littledale, where Venus is.

Some minutes pass before I get up from that bench and reach that railing, getting a much better view of the Trick House and the whole area around it. I lean over the railing just barely, getting a stunning view of Mauport bridge as seen from the sea, essentially - all of these buildings suspended on top of the waves thanks to a never-ending series of white pillars, with many gaps in between and a few more lookout spots like this one where we stopped. Well, my moment of awe is interrupted way too soon by me getting startled by more Taillow and Wingull flying by, but it was nice while it lasted. I look back towards Hikaru, and this time it's me who would like to be followed, but they seem still busy on their X-Transceiver or something like that, so I leave them be. I try getting a single photo myself, but I'm sure they'll say it's blurry. You bet!

There's even someone fishing from this lookout, not too far from where I'm standing. That goes without saying, but it reminds me of when I tried fishing with Tsu back in Petalburg, or when me and June found ourselves meddling with a Basculin in Cottage Grove. If I remember correctly, the bridge didn't quite help with the variety of Pokémon in these waters, but I still wonder if there's still some more resilient creatures in these waters. Maybe the same Shellos from Slateport? Maybe the Basculin from Cottage Grove? If it's not that one thing that could create a school in a matter of seconds and turn into a giant monster, maybe…

"Yes Hikaru?"

🚲🚲🚲

"Hikaru…!"

Nah, maybe I can still keep going for a bit longer and spare myself from arguing with them again. As long as my legs can take me places… it must be a good thing they didn't hear my voice just now.

When they walked up to me on the railing, I hoped it was to appreciate the scenery with me and take some time to relax. But that was more like what I wished would happen, because if I'd known better, I'd immediately realize what was going to happen. Needless to say, Hikaru just wanted me to hurry and just resume traveling.

They weren't looking very serious or very worried or very angry… just their usual self I guess. I already decided I was going to indulge in their schemes for a while, though, so I let go of my hand and walked back to our benches with them, picked up all of my stuff, and got back on my bike. I was a bit sad that I had to leave that spot, don't misunderstand me, but I didn't give it that much importance, either.

Once we got up to speed though, the issue I was dealing with was clear. They were going fast. I wasn't tired enough to complain to them just then, and force them to slow down, so I hoped they'd do that on their own. And for some moments, I thought I was even getting closer to them! But…

I've never been that good at sports. I don't have a lot of stamina. I don't know how good Hikaru is at those things, I don't even care that much, but the point is… it doesn't take much to outperform me. Or rather - let me correct myself, because apparently I'm not falling behind as fast as I thought - it feels like I'm giving it my all to keep up with Hikaru. I'm starting to sweat, my face is turning red (for the wrong reason) and my glasses are starting to slip down. But they don't, they look… relatively fine. For all I know they could crash in bed tonight and be all groggy when they wake up, but I wouldn't know!

Plus, I just don't get this obsession about getting places without enjoying the journey. Why do they have to be so apathetic about Mauport Bridge, when it has the potential to be just as interesting as Mauville (if not more)? Do they not care about the people that live here and make this place vibrant? And on a more general note, do they not care about the little details that change every so often? Maybe tomorrow that one shop could have a different assortment of paintings for show, maybe that other one that's closed today would finally open up again.

And yet, as I said… I'm not feeling ready to stop them. I noticed them looking around a few times, and it's less than before - it's stressful, it's like a mind game, and I'm here constantly worrying about when they'll look at me next - but it's something. If they would end up seeing me trailing away because I actually can't give it any more, maybe that would be the best scenario, because they'd know I really did all I could to keep their pace.

If I just told them to stop, there's still the chance they could not wait for me. I'm trying to think of reasons why they would do that, or why they'd want to wait for me, but it's hard to read them. Many of their actions suggest they want to help me and stay with me, even if it means having to force me into submission by bringing up the Mawilite they somehow still hold in their hands. But then why would they not give a damn if I'm struggling? There's got to be a limit to everything, unless they're too dumb to see it. Or maybe there's another reason why they're so headstrong.

What's got into you?

Littledale, uh? Is that Oldale + Littleroot?

I'll probably take Reed's advice and leave for Mauville real quick, after beating the Gym and finding those two trainers, of course. I don't know much about them, just that they are from the same generation of trainers as Wally, which means they must be good.

Is one of them the Gym Leader? Nah, Reed would know.

Unless he doesn't want to tell me.

I'll find out when I get there, but first…

I haven't really stopped thinking about what Wally told me. The thing about keeping people that support you on your journey close and whatever, that's why I talked to Reed in the first place.

But I keep circling back to think about my brother. You know, the one working at the Battle Subway that's taking care of Boo right now.

'Maybe I should text him', I think, opening another chat while I have time until my pokémon get healed.

"hi"

I hesitate to press the "send" button, my finger hovering over it just as it did when Andrea called yesterday.

But this time I don't do anything.

I don't know what to tell him, y'see? I'm almost completely sure he doesn't want to talk to me. And he has good reasons for it, because I completely ignored him even after he supported me when I wanted to come here.

I close the app just before I get called by the nurse to get my fully recovered pokémon back, and it's when I start putting my duskballs back on my belt that I hear a notification on my XT. And I would have loved it was Reed again, but no, once again I messed everything up!

A fair chance to prove yourself
Saturday, October 3rd - afternoon - Mauport Bridge
₽ 100,000?

If I remember correctly from my time in the Slateport library, that's... almost the amount of money I'd make by selling Avril's stone. But if all I have to do to get that money is win a Pokémon battling tournament... Oh, count. me. in.

I had just overheard some people walking by, talking about this tournament in Mauville with a big prize or something along those lines. A quick search on the XT actually wasn't enough to find anything, because most of the results I found were talking about competitions for professional trainers who already have travelled through an entire region. But just as I was about to lose hope… I found some random post talking about this Winstrate Cup. A monthly tournament for trainers that are still starting out with their journey. Two to four badges, it says - and I happen to have just enough.

Of course, there's an obvious problem. I have to reach Mauville to sign up, and there's only 32 spots. Sign-ups have also been open for at least one day as I'm reading this. I have no idea how many people are actually interested, but the ingredients are in place to have a snowfall of trainers coming in, if nothing else for that sweet, sweet reward at the end. Oh, and I don't care if I'm not that good of a trainer yet, I don't care who I'm up against, that is not going to stop me from trying my absolute best to win.

Starting now. Time to speed up on this bike, no matter how tired I'll get by the end.

Come on Avril!

💸💸💸

Ain't it funny how I'm always after money, uh? I used to hate that way of thinking, I used to think I'd never chase it the same way my parents would, but look at me now!

Money sure has some positives that I have been enjoying more and more. Asking for a favor and being subjected to people questioning your choices is a memory of the past, thanks to a well placed banknote. Many objects become available to you more easily, and they can actually become yours in seconds. It's obvious, isn't it? But I have to thank money for getting to be myself, through and through. I have to thank money for being here in the first place.

What I hate about money is how it gets to people's heads. Earning money is necessary to live, I guess, but selling your life for the sake of earning money is not worth it. That's what my parents did, that's what they tried to make me do, well… I ain't having none of that! If money has allowed me to express myself, it sure can't become the reason why I shouldn't be able to!

Am I asking too much? Back in Castelia, people would have definitely thought so. I thought so too, being surrounded with that kind of people everywhere I looked… and even later on, I knew I had to play that game too. I worked at a bunch of different jobs, and the employers were mostly fine. But you could tell from the looks of other employees, or passerbys, or clients… that not everyone seemed ok with me getting that wage - the same wage as other people who perhaps looked more responsible, reliable, and boring. That's another thing that money can do to people, perhaps.

Tournaments for trainers are stirring the pot though. I didn't even consider them to become that important throughout my journey as a trainer, but this is the moment. Now, with the Winstrate Cup, is the moment I realize their potential.

Is this really how the life of a trainer could work? Spending time with their Pokémon teams, honing their skills at their own pace, and then joining whatever tournament is open at any given moment, winning it, and getting money that way?

All the external judgment would be gone once you can prove you're the best of the bunch at… Pokémon training. That is the only focal point of all the pressure coming from outside, all the judgment coming from other people, all of your personal fulfillment. It's definitely like putting all the eggs in one basket, but what a basket it is.

Route 110 Land Bridge

The red mushroom was a mistake. Shortly after packing up and moving again, Ed had started having problems. Nausea, dizziness, and most frightening of all, a difficulty forming coherent thought. He'd managed to purge the mushroom from his body, but the side effects remain and he's still feeling shaky.

"I don't think it's lethal. I didn't ingest enough to kill me, but this is not ideal!" He clings to Neo, holding the mechanical Pokémon close as he forces himself to keep walking. "How could I be so foolish? Red, vibrant red, a color of danger and warning! It says 'Stay away!', but I ignored it! Oh, curse my hubris! Thinking I was prepared for this expedition!"

Neo buzzes in concern, and Addie pulls at his pant leg. It takes Ed a moment to realize the road has curved, and that he's marching steadily into the water again. He curses his misfortune, removing his socks and shoes once back on dry land.

"Sunny used to go barefoot, back in Kinyo." He explains to Addie as he gingerly walks the path. "She had calluses on her feet, but they protected her, made it easier to move about the rough terrain. I could never do it, my mother would have been very upset. She didn't like the idea of me going outside and getting hurt, always told me to stay safe. Especially after... wait, I never told you that story, did I?"

Addie shakes his head, and even Neo buzzes a negatory.

"Ha!" Ed barks out a laugh. "It's quite the story, actually. You see, it was August, and I was only five..." He trails off, looking into the distance.

Neo glances at Addie, who merely tilts his head in confusion. Ed stares forward, his breathing becoming more strained and his eyes widening slightly. Addie pushes against his leg, but Ed remains catatonic. Together, the two Pokémon push him toward some rocks, managing to knock him over into a general sitting position.

Addie digs through his fur, retrieving one of his favorites, a Pecha Berry. He waddles up to Ed, shoving the berry into his trainer's mouth. Ed pushes back on instinct, but Addie is heavier and stronger than him, and swallows the berry, though his eyes remain distant.

Neo buzzes a warning, and Addie steps back as they charge electricity in their magnets. They zap Ed with a low power Thunder Shock, causing him to lock up and grit his teeth in surprise and pain.

He gasps as the current stops, stumbling away from the rock and rapidly muttering under his breath. "...Professor Elm said they don't usually go that far west, they prefer the mountains, probably looking for food... huh. Why do I taste sweet?"

Addie hugs his leg, while Neo eyes him critically. Ed rubs at his eyes with one hand, his head still pounding. "I think I shouldn't push myself. I know we just stopped for lunch, but I might need a short nap. I'll just sleep off this headache, you two just stick close. Maybe you could explore around here?"

He shucks his satchels, lowering himself to the ground and leaning against the rock. He lowers his goggles to shade his eyes, blocking out the world around him and manually slowing his breathing.

After a moment, he appears to be asleep, and Addie crawls onto the rock to keep watch over him. Neo beeps at Addie, questioning why he'd choose there. Addie shrugs, having not given it much thought.

Neo rolls their eye, having to remind themself that Addie is still young and illogical. They hover over Ed, magnets spinning as they send out a weak Supersonic pulse to scan the area. Content with the results, they lower themself to the ground nearby.

Addie huffs out a breath, not entirely sure what just happened. He puffs out his chest, certain that he'll be able to spot any dangers from his vantage point. He sticks his tongue out at Neo to convey how much smarter his idea is.

Neo bristles at the implication, humming indignantly. They rise into the air, floating in a circle around Addie. They watch as Addie turns his head to follow, pausing when they're behind him and he can't see them anymore. Addie flails about trying to find Neo, rolling off the rock to face them.

Neo bobs in mid-air as though nodding. They know Addie can't see everything, while their sensors will pick up any changes to their mental map at just a moment's notice.

Addie scratches his head, wondering how Neo can notice changes if they're snoozing on the ground. He's pretty sure Neo would need to be constantly scanning the area for their idea to work.

Neo pauses, changing the subject to point out they weren't snoozing, they were just conserving battery. They point out that they don't have ready access to electricity to feed on, and don't gain as much benefit from food and drink as Addie or Edison do.

Addie frowns in concern, hoping that Neo isn't too hungry out here, but Neo advises him not to worry. They don't feel hunger as readily as others, and won't feel any side effects until their battery is much lower. Addie hums in thought, simultaneously relieved and envious. He's pretty much hungry all the time, and is accustomed to the sensation, so doesn't really know what it's like to not be hungry.

Neo has to think about that. It's hard to describe a lack of something, when you're not used to having it. They may not get hungry, but there are plenty of other things they don't feel. Like the wind on one's fur, or when Edison affectionately pats Addie's head. Their sensors tell them of the contact, or the presence of wind, but their metal body doesn't actually feel it.

Addie reaches up, pulling Neo into a hug. They may not be able to feel it like he can, but they understand the sentiment behind it. They buzz in gratitude, sending a low electric pulse into Addie, tickling him and making him laugh. Neo emits a series of beeps in a similar cadence, their version of laughing.

Neither Pokémon sees the small smile on Ed's face as he watches them.

The two look around the area as Ed had suggested, finding that there are several rocks in this area. Neo scans the area to confirm that the elevation is slightly lower here, a natural quarry untouched by the tides. Addie breaks open a cracked rock out of curiosity, but doesn't find anything.

Neo beeps in confusion, wondering what he's doing, and Addie demonstrates his Rock Smash technique on another cracked rock. Back in Kinyo, when Ed had first taught him the move, he'd explained that sometimes rocks could contain valuable items, and occasionally wild Pokémon would hide underneath.

Neo hovers around, remembering hearing something similar while Edison was still in school. They recall that certain rocks, more accurately geodes, often contained evolutionary stones. They advise looking for one of those, but Addie cheers as he smashes another rock, finding a clear, colorless gem inside.

Neo can't argue with results, but now Addie wants to find one of those stones for Ed, so he keeps smashing rocks. Neo hovers nearby, scanning the area and guiding Addie. Dozens of rocks and a bit of digging later, they've uncovered four more of those clear gems but no geodes.

Neo tells Addie to stand back, before firing off Thunder Shocks into the ground below, though they only succeed in attracting small bits of iron sand to their magnets. Addie laughs as some iron shavings stick to their central body, looking like a mustache below their eye. Neo spins their magnets to reverse polarity, repelling the iron and cleaning themself up.

"That looks like fun, mind if I join in?" Edison chimes in from nearby, securing his satchels over his shoulders. In their search, his Pokémon hadn't noticed him wake up. Addie rushes over to hug his leg, nearly knocking him off his feet in the process. Ed laughs as he reaches down to ruffle his fur, then reaches out to Neo, gently patting the top of their body.

"Are we ready to move on, or do we want to play in the sandbox some more?" Neo moves to Edison's side, but Addie throws himself to the ground, digging at random spots. Ed chuckles at the sight. "Alright, we'll keep digging, but not for much longer. We don't want to lose the daylight."

Addie keeps looking, breaking rocks and digging at areas Neo points out, while Ed wanders nearby, looking but not touching. Something catches his eye, a small pile of stones that look to have been set up manually, but partially collapsed. He crouches down to investigate, moving the top stone to see what's hidden underneath, when Addie cries out in excitement, getting his attention.

Addie rushes up to him, clutching a geode in his tiny paws. It rattles slightly when shook, indicating something inside.

"Hey, nice find! Here, let's crack it open." He turns back to the pile of rocks, seeing a small shining stone placed there as though on a shrine. He quickly tucks it into his vest pocket to look at later. This is Addie's moment, after all.

He sets the rocks up to give Addie a stable, sturdy surface, setting the geode on top. Addie raises both hands, ready to smash them down, but Ed stops him. "We might want to use a little more finesse on this one. Alternate hands, Chip Away at it until it breaks."

Addie nods, striking repeatedly at the geode until it cracks open, revealing the gleaming crystals inside, along with a leaf preserved in stone. Ed brushes the shards of geode aside, picking up the Leaf Stone. "Very nice! It's a shame Cutie already evolved, I could have given this to Marie..."

He glances up at the bridge overhead as he thinks of Marie, wondering what she and Sunny are up to. Are they still together? With how much they get on each other's nerves, he imagines they're probably fighting right now...

He looks back to Addie and Neo, smiling. "Good work, you two. And look at these Gems! We should do this more often, we'll find all sorts of collectibles! But for now, let's keep moving."

Addie cheers, heading back to the path with Neo on his heels. Ed follows, though distracted by the rock he'd grabbed. He pulls it out to inspect, noting that the pattern inside the stone is familiar. It's nearly identical to the Key Stones he and Sunny had found in Granite Cave. When he gets his phone fixed, he'll have to give that archeologist a call.

Addie calls out to him, and he puts the stone in his satchel and out of his mind for now, running to catch up with his Pokémon.

Thursday, October 1st @ 1815 - Littledale

A bright array of reds, oranges and yellows fills the sky, as a battle rages on the ground in front of a small barn on the outskirts of Littledale. This matchup currently featured a Skiddo, representing Littledale's Gym Leader Merry Richtide, and a Poliwag, brought to the battlefield by the challenger, Clint Shaw. Mr. Shaw had taken the first round of the battle, his Grovyle emerging victorious, but now in the second round found himself subject to a type disadvantage, and was feeling the effects.

Poliwag had just been tripped up by another Grass Knot, and the Tadpole once again came crashing to the ground. Clint had no answer for this matchup, all the momentum was with Merry and Skiddo. Poliwag retaliated with Pound, which did some damage on impact but paled in comparison to the super-effective attacks Skiddo had been using. Skiddo went after Poliwag with a Horn Leech, and that seemed to settle that round as Poliwag fell to the ground, clearly in rough shape. Clint had decided at that point, with nothing working for him this round that he couldn't watch Poliwag get ragdolled around the ring any further, so he recalled Poliwag.

"Round two goes to Leader Merry, trainers ready your Pokemon for round three," Sergei announced.

Considering his situation, Clint decided on Charmeleon as his next Pokemon. It was win this round or lose the match, so Clint was going to lean on Charmeleon here. Merry responded with a Herdier.

Clint wasted no time with the offense, having Charmeleon start out with a Fire Fang. Herdier responed with a Howl, a move intended to raise its attack for battle. Herdier then used Pursuit, closing in on Charmeleon with an attack, and knocking Charmeleon back. Before he could refocus on his target, Herdier had dug underground. Fire types didn't like ground moves like that, this wasn't good.

Charmeleon sure didn't like the result of all that digging around, as Herdier emerged from the ground, catching Charmeleon off-guard and landing a solid hit on Charmeleon.

Charmeleon lost track of Herdier, who once again burrowed underground. Clint had an idea however. He had Charmeleon shoot a Dragon Breath into the hole Herdier last went into, in an effort to flush Herdier out from under the surface. Sure enough, the tactic worked and out came Herdier from the dirt, being followed by a menacing looking gust of purple flames. Herdier landed on the ground next to the hole it had come out of, and Charmeleon took this as a chance to use another Fire Fang, successfully landing another attack.

Herdier managed to put some distance between itself and Charmeleon, and the two Pokemon stared each other down. Charmeleon made his move, closing in on Herdier and using Slash, swinging his arm and hitting Herdier square in the head, causing Herdier to be flung back, slamming into the fence behind it as it tumbled away. Looks like Charmeleon got lucky and scored a critical hit, and had an opportunity to close out this round. Charmeleon charged at Herdier once again, only this time to be thwarted by a light blue forcefield that showed up in front of Herdier, bouncing Charmeleon back the way he came. Looked like the move Protect, Clint forgot he had a TM for that move.

Charmeleon was able to regain his composure following the protect, and set his eyes on Herdier, who was getting back up despite how worn down the Pokemon looked. Charmeleon wasted no time, using Dragon's Breath to attack from a distance, the purple flames hitting the Herdier, pushing it back. The Pokemon briefly staggered, before falling down to the ground. Merry put their hands on their hips, before calling Herdier back to it's ball.

"Herdier has been removed from battle. Therefore, the challenger wins this round, which makes it two to one for the challenger, the fourth and final round will decide the winner," Sergei chimed in.

One last round to win, and Clint was down to his last Pokemon, and the newest member of his team, Ralts. Did he have the most confidence in the world about this, obviously not but he still had a chance. Merry responded with a Miltank, which based on Clint's experiences ranching could be quite the handful sometimes. He didn't have a choice this time, he'd have to pull something off here to secure the win.

Ralts started off with a Growl, which apparently was going to cause this Miltank four times the size of Ralts to have weaker attacks. That came in handy right off the bat as Miltank went in with a Headbutt, tucking her head down and slamming into Ralts, launching the tiny into the air, but he was able to land on one of the fence posts, sticking the landing rather gracefully. From there, Ralts used Confusion, putting his hands on his head next to his front horn and sending out airwaves that made Miltank's head hurt, the cow Pokemon holding onto her head in pain, eventually dropping down on all fours.

Clint had Ralts use Double Team, setting up an optical illusion in order to make Ralts harder to hit. Due to Miltank being the stronger offensive option, Clint's plan was to have the much smaller Ralts avoid attacks, wearing out Miltank as much as he could.

There wasn't an immediate payoff as Miltank used another Headbutt, and while not directly hitting Ralts, Miltank hit the fence post he was on, knocking Ralts off the post and down to the ground. Ralts made his way back into the ring, but as soon as he did so he was met by a Rollout, being struck by the attack, almost completely flattened by the attack.

Miltank came around for the second pass, only for Ralts to Teleport out of the way. Miltank turned around following the miss, going for pass number three. The move was able to last for around five of these passes, so Ralts just had to avoid the final three. The third one was teleported out of by Ralts, as Merry huffed about a couple misses in a row.

Ralts, needing a breather to recharge, wasn't able to dodge the fourth Rollout, sending him flying into the doors of the barn. Ralts picked himself up after that, only to have Miltank rolling towards him for the last pass. Ralts was able to Teleport now, and deftly got out of the way of the final Rollout. Miltank wasn't able to stop, and crashed through the doors on both sides of the barn, only coming out of the attack after being slowed down by two sets of barn doors.

"Darn it, I just put them doors on yesterday," Merry complained.

Clint smirked, and had Ralts walk through, using Confusion on Miltank, who was already feeling scratched up after the barn door incident. Miltank shook off the effects of both confusion and the crash, and began to drink its own milk, in a move Clint always thought was very odd. He was also additionally disturbed this time because it was undoing the progress he had made so far.

Clint remembered that Ralts knew Draining Kiss, which simultaneously would sap the health of the target Pokemon while replenishing the health of the user. This time was as good as any to use the attack, so Clint had Ralts use it. Ralts went up to Miltank, and gave it a kiss on the cheek, which caused Miltank to have a reddish glow, and a yellow orb appeared above Miltank before absorbing into Ralts. Ralts then made his way back into the ring, being followed by Miltank. Miltank aimed for another Headbutt, which Ralts replied by using Double Team, creating an illusion that there was more than one Ralts. Miltank headbutted a fake Ralts, flying through the illusion and into the corner of the ring.

Ralts used another confusion, dropping the Miltank to the ground, holding its head in pain. Miltank tried to use another Milk Drink to recover, but Ralts used another Draining Kiss, essentially transferring the recovered health from Miltank to Ralts. But Miltank wasn't out of the fight yet, as she used Stomp, barreling towards Ralts and stomping into the ground as hard as she could, sending Ralts flying out of the ring.

Ralts eventually returned to the ring, perching on top of the fence post. Miltank went in for a Headbutt, but before she could land the attack, Ralts teleported to another fence post. From there, Ralts was able to use Confusion again, bringing down the Miltank. After the attack, Miltank was leaned up against the fence, too worn out to battle. So Merry brought her back into the Pokeball.

"Leader Merry has withdrawn Miltank, thus ending the battle. Challenger Clint wins three rounds to one," Sergei announced.

Clint withdrew Ralts into his Pokeball, and walked over to Merry to shake their hand.

"It was a pleasure Merry, if you need someone to help stick around and repair the barn here I might be able to," Clint offered.

"Thanks for the offer, but I'll handle it," Merry replied,

"Good battlin' out there kid, you follow me back to the Gym I'll grab a badge for ya, and one of them TM's."

"Lead the way then," Clint said.

Back at the gym at dusk, Merry handed out the rewards to Clint for taking the win, the Dell Badge, $5000 and a TM for the move Bullet Seed, which should be a good fit for Grovyle. The two gave each other a tip of the hat and went their seperate ways. Apparently the big city of Mauville was the next destination for Clint. This was going to be a big change for him for sure.

- Clint acquired the Dell Badge!
- Clint acquired the TM Bullet Seed!
- Clint acquired $5000!

Chapter 5 #3 - Moving Along

The actual construction of the bridge is plain. A simple, consistently ascending concrete menace. The eastern lanes are nothing to write home about, their blue rails blending alternately with sea and sky and tall lightposts breaking the silhouette at uniform intervals. Just bridges, despite their length.

It's the details that make Mauport interesting.

Marie has heard of bridge towns, of course- old-timey Galar was covered in them, and Unova's Village Bridge is a beautiful piece of architecture. But to see a modern construction be used in such a way- fascinating, even beyond its scale! Beyond even the intricate mosaics of public spaces, the painted bicycle lanes, the lively crowds- practical thought has been put into every aspect of this town.

The white stepped rooftops, for example. Their bed and breakfast host had been quick to inform Marie of their importance; the stepped design slows rainfall and makes collecting water easy as can be, and the white coating helps reflect the sun's purifying rays. Designed initially for isolated settlements with no other fresh water, like the smaller islands of eastern Hoenn, it's proven highly valuable to the residents of Mauport. Water conservation is encouraged, but the cisterns below each row of buildings have only run dry once in the village's history.

Incredible!

The sewage and drainage systems are fascinating as well; Mauport apparently has its own treatment plant at the south end of the bridge. Whatever they use there is working, clearly, as Marie would never have known had she not been told. She's not entirely sure where all the pipes are, still, because their host had simply said "underneath" and moved on. Marie hopes they aren't dripping on Edison or anything.

Mauport's electrical facilities are apparently located at the north end, and pull power from the waves and tides below, the solar-gathering roads and traffic-powered wind turbines of the east lanes, and similar wind-catching turbines installed all across the bridges. Honestly, she's excited to spot all of these cleverly integrated things now that she knows what to look for!

Unfortunately, Marie is apparently not allowed to spend four hours delving further into this while sitting inside a B&B. She and Sunny had an agreement, after all.

Marie isn't sure how aware Sunny is of what she's doing. If she's done it right, she shouldn't be at all. The idea is that both of them need to make money, like, immediately. Yesterday's earnings are still not enough for them to be comfortable, really, but enough for them to spend a day on the move before working more. At least- that was what Sunny was told.

As usual, Marie has a hidden agenda.

Sunny needs to slow down. This much she has gathered, from listening to Edison and watching the girl herself. However, simply going about at a languid pace and expecting Sunny to fall in line- that wouldn't work at all; she would just become fed up and leave Marie in the dust. Which is a trait Marie can certainly exploit if she gets tired of this game. But no, for now- Sunny has to be cajoled and tricked and manipulated. Marie has to pretend to compromise, find good excuses, out-maneuver Sunny's volatile emotions. She holds her back for a day, to work, and lets her go for another. Tomorrow Marie will find more work, and hold Sunny back again. Rinse and repeat. It's a fun game, and eventually, Sunny will get used to sitting still a while longer, Marie hopes.

Though she doesn't even hope that for her own sake, which is a bit strange to consider.

Regardless, it is nearly ten in the morning, and Marie has found a lovely use for the basket slung along the handlebars of her bike. Stunnie had fit perfectly, but after harassing one too many passerby he was swapped in favor of Tuie, whose mild curiosity gave way to her usual sleepiness very quickly.

"You could appreciate being out a little more, you know," Marie grumbles at her bird. Tuie cracks one eye open and vanishes, reappearing in Sunny's basket. Sunny jumps in surprise, swerving and nearly going down, so Tuie teleports back to Marie with a put-upon chirp.

"Hey, stay in your lane!" Sunny snaps at Tuie. "You trying to scare me, jumping in front of me like that?"

Marie pokes Tuie as she settles back into her basket. "See? Don't be ungrateful, I could be worse. Yelling all the time and never letting a Pokémon out." As if Marie herself hasn't spent most of her journey so far without a Pokémon by her side.

"Tch…" Sunny puffs out a breath in annoyance. "I don't yell all the time. Only when it's appropriate." She looks over at Tuie, then at her own empty basket, before she stops for a moment to let Sputter out into the basket. Sputter yawns, looking around the area. Sunny shakes her head as she catches up to Marie. "No, we're not training. We're just… going on a bike ride."

Sputter makes a happy sound, her flame igniting and flickering in the breeze.

That's what trainers are supposed to do, isn't it? Walk with their Pokémon, get to know them, spend time with them. At the very least, Pokémon aren't meant to sit all day, or days on end, in their PokéBalls. There's a reason there is a limit to how many trainers can carry, after all- the whole idea is that trainers must interact with and feed their Pokémon while travelling, and six is the average number that people are able to provide for without struggle.

Then again, four is already a struggle.

Marie is destitute. She can barely feed and shelter herself, let alone four Pokémon that need to eat. Even if Cutie can get by on photosynthesis, he should have more than just that, right? And she doesn't have a good way to walk with any of them- Cutie is slower than she is, Stunnie is a menace, Pokie is basically immobile. Tuie has a tendency to simply fall asleep- and therefore fall off of whatever part of Marie she is perched on. An issue, when walking especially.

So when is she supposed to make money for feeding them, and time for playing with them? How does she balance travel, finances, training, and interaction? How do people do this? Sunny's no help, either- she's in the same situation Marie is in. Except-

"Your Pokémon are all little, right?" she asks, watching Sputter's flame flicker. Is that okay? What happens if it goes out?

Despite Marie's internal concerns, Sunny doesn't seem bothered by the flame- merely surprised to be asked a question. "I guess so. Striker is kinda heavy, but they're all small, yeah."

"Why don't you have them out much, then? They should be easy enough to take places."

"Yeah, but that's not how it's done. Pokémon travel inside their Poké Balls, unless you're training, or… battling or want to see them..." She sounds uncertain, like she's just now realizing how this sounds. "They're comfortable in there."

Are they? "Is a stasis hold comfortable, do you think?" Marie's curiosity is genuine- she's never really considered how comfortable such a thing would be. Convenient, sure, and useful- but comfortable?

"That's… what they told us at the Academy. Pokémon choose strong Trainers to travel and train with, and Poké Balls are an easy and comfortable way to carry them, especially the bigger ones. They never really talked about traveling with them out."

"Then when do you spend time with them? When do they get to do things? Like--" Marie gives a vague wave that almost unbalances her. "We spend all this time walking- or biking- and our Pokémon don't. They should do things other than battle and train, right? And we're- preventing that, I think?"

She's not sure. She's not sure where she's even going with this, just thinking out loud. She's seen people all over Johto, all over Hoenn, always out and about with their Pokémon. Hell, even her dad's Ivysaur is a staple fixture of the greenhouse adjacent to his office when he's at work, not just found trundling around the house in the evenings. What makes travelling trainers so different? If people can walk with their Pokémon in the city, at work, at home- why can't she and Sunny figure it out?

"I don't know!" Sunny seems upset, confronted with an issue she clearly hasn't given much thought before. "Maybe I'm just doing it wrong, that wouldn't surprise me at this point!"

Sputter looks back to Sunny, the time of the basket the only thing stopping her from crawling into her trainer's arms.

Sunny sighs, quickly patting Sputter's head before returning both hands to the bars. "It's a lot, okay? There's a lot more people here doing stuff with Pokémon than I ever saw back home. I… I don't know if you knew this, but Pokémon training kind of fell out of style in Kinyo. They actually shut down the League this year. Coming here, I feel like I missed some critical need-to-know information, you know?"

"If you've missed critical information, think of where I am," Marie laughs, dry and humorless. "Maybe we should just enroll at Rustboro Academy."

That might not be a terrible idea, all told.

"Who can we ask?" Marie muses. "Who do we know that knows things that we don't?" Maybe she can tack random questions onto her essays, see if Brendan will answer them. But what does she even ask? She's already run into this with him before- he can't teach her everything, without any sort of guide. That's not even his job.

"Well, we know a couple Professors, but I'd rather avoid Professor May if I can. She may be a former Champion, but she's kinda scary." Sunny shudders at some memory. "What about Gym Leaders? Isn't helping people live with and understand Pokémon part of their job? We could ask one of them."

Marie doesn't know a Professor May. Maybe that was one of Sunny's former teachers? Taught by a champion- crazy. But still doesn't know anything about this... "Which gym leader, then? I've got… well, I only have Brawly and Wally, I guess. They're both nice."

But are they helpful for this?

"Sure, nice… wait, you have their numbers or something? I was figuring we'd just ask the leader in Mauville when we got there. Why did you get phone numbers?"

"Um, I don't know? Brawly said I could ask him about stuff if I needed so he gave me his- I think he might do that a lot, actually- and Wally and I might be friends now? Kind of? We did training together a few times." If a failed gym battle counts as one of those times. "It's definitely not their personal numbers, there's no way. But work numbers are still numbers."

Sunny is quiet for a moment, then shakes her head. "You are far more social than I am. I suppose we could call one of them. But we can figure this out ourselves, right? I mean, how hard is it to take care of Pokémon and spend time with them?"

Ah.

Sunny doesn't want to admit to them that she doesn't know what she's doing.

That's relatable.

It shouldn't be hard, should it, and yet- they are struggling, somehow. Maybe it's simply because they haven't thought of it until now, and now that they've thought of it they will do it. Maybe they just need to give it time.

Marie is not a particularly patient person.

"Let's find something to do with them," she decides. "What are people around here doing?"

Looking around, they can see plenty of people with their Pokémon, walking or shopping or just hanging out, but what draws Sunny's attention…

"Battling!" Sunny skids to a stop, pointing to a Wingull and Taillow overhead, their trainers calling out instructions to them. They're very mobile, swooping and diving but never touching down. As they watch, Wingull spits water at Taillow's face, causing it to smack into a news kiosk and fall to the ground. It quickly hops back up, but its trainer groans sadly while Wingull makes a victory loop.

"Is it over?" Marie wonders. The Taillow trainer hasn't forfeited and the bird is still certainly able to battle- why were they paying out to the Wingull trainer already?

"Of course, of course! It touched down, didn't it?" A vaguely familiar mop of copper curls appears between Marie and Sunny, squeezing into the small space between their bikes. "That's how they do up here- not a lot of room for traditional battles, so they take to the skies! It's good fun, don't you think?"

"Could be…" Marie is already shuffling through all the Pokémon she and Sunny have on hand. "They can't touch down?"

"Nope, nope! If a Pokémon touches something other than its opponent, that's a ring out! Kind of. Except there's no ring. You know?"

"I know we can't do it, then," Marie sighs. The short stranger tips their head to the side.

"Why not?"

"Do they have to fly?" Sunny seems to have gone through the same mental gymnastics as Marie. "Can't they just battle on top of a bench or something? I don't have any Flying types."

"They gotta be able to sustain levitation without assistance." The person sounds like they're quoting someone else for a moment. "We've seen Levitate and Magnet Rise and psychic craziness and- flying types obviously are best, obviously, but anything that doesn't touch the ground- hey, hey!" They snap their fingers a few times and point at Sunny's basket, where Sputter tilts her head in confusion. "Lampent would work! And Xatu!" Tuie opens one eye to see a finger hovering alarmingly close- she vanishes with a clap of psychic power and reappears out of reach atop Marie's head. "Do they want to evolve?"

"If they evolve they can fly?" Sunny looks at Sputter in awe, and Sputter just looks back with an innocent smile.

"Sure, sure! Well- more of a general hover, for Lampent. Well- both, honestly, actually! But they could definitely, definitely do the sky battles!" The redhead claps their hands and bounces in place. "They just need some training!"

It never really occurred to Marie that a Pokémon might not want to evolve. She tries to look up, to see Tuie, but it's difficult when the bird has a firm grip on her hair. "Do you want to be a Xatu?"

Tuie shuffles her feet, tangling her hair further, and eventually chirps a tone Marie has come to associate with sure, whatever.

"Training it is, then," she says, suddenly remembering she hasn't actually done any training since she was in Petalburg.

"Alright! Training! That's what a trainer does!" Sunny cheers loudly, Sputter following her lead. "Wait. Where are we going to train out here?"

"That's tough, that's tough," their informant hums, tapping their lips with one finger. "You'll have to be precise, yes? You won't find many open spaces, so you'll have to be very very careful. And aim up! Up is fine. As long as things don't come back down."

⟡ ⟡ ⟡ ⟡ ⟡

The idea unfolds as the girls pedal a winding path through Mauport: flying is mobility. Mobility is something that the Pokémon in question do not have, barring Tuie's Teleport. So, as a precursor to flying, perhaps they should train simply physical movement?

When they finally find a small, vacant plaza, Marie finds execution of the idea more difficult than anticipated. Specifically, convincing Tuie to pretend she doesn't have the ability to Teleport away from all of Sputter's halfhearted lunges.

"No, look, you have to-" Marie performs some kind of half-assed juke, which receives a snicker from Sunny. "I mean. Use your legs. Or flutter. I know you know how, I've seen you do it."

Tuie stares at her, unimpressed. Bratty, lazy bird!

"Well, is there another move you can use to… move?" Marie pulls up Tuie's data on the PokéDex app. "You can… do Ominous Wind?" A memory of a similar attack pops into mind. "On the ground?"

Tuie tilts her head and scritches at the pavement, then extends her tiny wings and flaps them once, ghostly energy gusting from them as she propels herself upward. It's only a few feet, and not angled perfectly straight, but it's a start! And more than Sputter can do, hah!

"Wow, she got like three feet of air with that one." Sunny teases, despite Sputter barely moving this whole time. "You know how crazy it is that your bird can't fly?"

Sputter tosses another Ember at Tuie, apparently happy to provide motivation, at least. Tuie disappears and reappears slightly to the left.

"No! Use the wind, come on…" Marie sighs. "Natu don't need to fly! They've got amazing psychic powers. But if you're going to evolve you need to fly, Tuie, you gotta learn… and hey! She's doing better than Sputter is, isn't she? Sputter doesn't even move!"

"She can move when she wants to! Sputter!" The little Litwick looks up expectantly. Sunny fumbles for a moment, then grabs Sputter and tosses her at Tuie. "Get closer!"

"Wha- that's not her moving, that's you moving her!" Tuie lets the blobby candle splat to the ground in front of her and gives Sputter a gentle peck. "And she doesn't even stay in the air."

"Well, yeah, but… actually, Sputter, use Minimize!" Sputter seems to melt into herself, becoming half of her usual size. "There, now there's more room for her to move. Now get closer!"

Sputter hops over to Tuie, though her ever-present smile falters. She looks back at Sunny, unsure what to do. Sunny shrugs. "I don't know, try moving around a bit?"

"Can she jump?" Marie asks. Maybe she can't- she doesn't even seem to have legs, really. Does Sputter have legs?

"Sure, when she has to. Show her your moves!" Sputter nods, hunching her body slightly before springing up and over Tuie, landing behind the tiny bird. "She's just as fast as before, just smaller, so it's easier for her to dodge. Maybe we can capitalize on that."

"Maybe. But what if it's like- Tuie, Ominous Wind the ground again."

The Natu obliges, flapping tiny wings to create far more power than is naturally possible and rising, nearly to Marie's eye level. The ghostly wind unfurls as it hits the ground, rolling toward Sputter's miniature form.

"Sputter, dodge! Obviously! But, uh…" Sunny struggles with her words, and Sputter is about the fall back into the Ominous Wind. "Oh! Use Ember! Ignite your wick, like a rocket!"

Sputter rolls in midair, flipping upside down as flames erupt on her head. The sudden burst of flame boosts her smaller body up and over Tuie, and nearly off the bridge itself.

"Too much! Come back!" Sunny recalls Sputter in a panic, then immediately calls her back out into her arms. Sputter cheers quietly, excited that she was flying for a moment. Sunny hugs her close. "We gotta work on your aim if we do that again."

Marie casually drops her hands from where they had instinctively flown to cover her mouth. She hadn't been worried. Or impressed at how much power the little candle put out. Of course not. Nothing to see. "Straight up is key, yes? For both of us. Maybe that's where we should put our focus instead of dodging."

"Yeah, yeah. Makes sense. They can't really fly just yet, so we need to get them closer to that. Makes total sense."

It very quickly becomes a competition to see who can gain the most height, and Marie very quickly finds that it is not Tuie. Sputter has less control, maybe, and has to go completely upside-down for this technique to work, but when she does it right she lifts off like a firework. And that, somehow, actually motivates Tuie- petulant chirping that seems like muttering under her breath turns into straining to gain height, flapping her little wings at the top of her pulses to gain her enough time to send another Ominous Wind sweeping downward. Still not matching Sputter, and neither of the Pokémon always going straight up, but by the time they've exhausted themselves they're almost, truly, flying.

Almost.

When Tuie fumbles a flight after getting the pattern well and truly down, Marie writes it off as a miscalculation. When she fumbles two more, that's when she realizes her little bird is tired.

None of her Pokémon have ever trained so much as to be tired.

"Time to be done," she announces briskly, catching Tuie midway through her latest tumble. "They're tired out."

Sunny looks to Sputter. "We've still got plenty of energy. Right, Sputter?" The little Litwick looks partially melted as she sits slumped over, but makes a visible effort to straighten up. Sunny frowns, but it's more contemplative than upset. "Yeah, on second thought, I think we're done for the day. I could go for some food, how about you?"

"Oh my, am I being asked on a date?" Marie covers her mouth demurely. "And so casually!"

"Oh come on…" Sunny mutters, facepalming in exasperation and walking away. "You are so annoying. Let's just go."

Marie allows herself to sulk as she follows Sunny to the bikes. Why can't she just play along? It's Sunny that's the annoying one. Bad-tempered and narrow-minded and no fun at all without Edison around to buffer.

Her own rushing sigh catches her off-guard. What the hell? What was that weird pang in her chest about?

"You okay back there?" Sunny calls out, and Marie only then realizes she's stopped walking. "What's the holdup?"

She doesn't know.

"Just making sure we didn't leave anything behind," she says, striding forward again with purpose. "Someone has to be responsible around here."

"Better you than me, I guess…" Sunny puts Sputter in the basket before climbing on her bike, waiting for Marie. She follows suit with Tuie and they're off once again- but this time Marie's attention is less on the sights and more on her own feelings.

Something isn't right, and she has no idea what it is.

Chapter 5 #4 - Mobility

"Just Teleport, you're too high-!"

"Quick, go left! No, my left, you're upside down!"

Sputter crashes into Tuie, and the two fall to the ground in a heap. Sunny curses loudly as she digs out her wallet, pouting grumpily.

"This is entirely your fault," Marie sniffs, after the two older trainers sporting twin Masquerain gleefully take off to spend Marie's hard-earned money on drinks.

"Me?! What about them?" Sunny gestures in the direction of the other trainers. "They didn't even move, that's gotta be illegal or something!"

"They barely had to, what with your brilliant commands doing most of the work." Marie cups her hands out in front of her and her Natu teleports into them. "It's cutting into our profits. We're supposed to be making money! You know, to live."

"I know, but… we need the practise! I'm good at battles, under normal circumstances, but these Sky Battles are hard! And currying is boring!"

Is that even the word for what a bike courier does? Marie thinks not, but she also can't think of the word it actually would be. "We need to not lose all our tips is what we need."

Sunny clearly wants to argue, but apparently can't think of a good one. "Ngh… you're right. Fine, I won't challenge anyone else while we're on the clock."

Unfortunately, halfway through their next delivery, Sunny gets around that promise when someone else challenges her to a battle.

"This is the last time, Sunny Dey," Marie hisses, as their little Pokémon take position for the fourth time that day.

"What? All I did was ask for directions, and say his Starly was cute. Which to be fair, it is. Not my fault he wanted to battle. Should I not have accepted for you, too?"

"I'm not getting left behind," Marie says curtly. The Starly hops excitedly in place as their bright-eyed opponent fumbles for another PokéBall. The boy's fluffy hair is in desperate need of shaping- it looks like he's been out on his own for a while and nobody has dragged him to a hairdresser. Maybe she'll point him to the one they'd passed earlier.

Finally, the kid sends out his second Pokémon- a little metal thing, levitating just above the ground. This Magnemite buzzes and twirls in the suddenly stifling silence on the girls' side of the road.

Sunny quietly picks up Sputter, hugging her close. Marie can faintly hear her mutter "That's not fair…" before she clears her throat. "No, yeah, that makes sense. Mostly birds, in a Sky Battle. But we've fought Magnemite plenty of times and won. We got this. You ready?"

"Of course."

A friend of the boy's counts down and at zero, everything becomes a blur. Four Pokémon in the air, Tuie and Starly rising high in tandem while Sputter shoots up and over toward her opponent. Fourth battle of the day means that Marie has gotten some timing down- near the apex of the Ominous Wind boost, Tuie charges a Cosmic Power while gliding as best she can to maintain height. Sometimes random gusts of wind are a hindrance but this time they are a help, catching her little wings and sweeping her high enough to stack Cosmic Power again without fear of touchdown. The Starly is left to hover uncertainly while the boy's attention is fully on the waxy bullet headed straight toward his Magnemite. Is this fair, two trainers versus one?

Sunny doesn't seem bothered by it, and has Sputter target Magnemite with Ember. It's clumsy, as she's also trying to stay aloft, but the gouts of flame scorch Magnemite enough that the boy pays more attention to Sputter than Tuie. Sunny actually grins when Starly goes to help, ordering a Flame Burst that catches both Pokémon in the blast.

Unfortunately, it takes more effort than an Ember, and Sputter splats against a park bench before she can get her flame back underneath herself. Fortunately, Magnemite hits the ground shortly after, knocked out by Sputter's strongest Fire attack.

Even so, Marie clicks her tongue. "Did you forget about flying?"

"Did you forget about… shut up!"

The Starly is catching up to Tuie, now, but that's easy enough to fix- Ominous Wind doesn't buffet her as much, not that high up, but she can Teleport higher again and gain just enough time to stack another Cosmic Power before the wind picks up again and sends both Tuie and the Starly tumbling, their tiny wings and light bodies no match for the colliding temperatures of land and sea. Tuie Teleports, but her aim is scrambled- she appears lower, yes, but completely off the side of the bridge and Marie doesn't even think about the people she shoves out of her way as she races toward the railing, furiously jamming the recall button. She hits the rail with a thud across her chest and can only see the barest glimpse of a spiraling Natu before someone hauls her back- Marie swings around hysterically and socks a big guy in the jaw just to be able to wriggle away and catch the rail again, staring wild-eyed into the space below.

And suddenly the wind is coming from the opposite direction, but far more localized- a whirling storm of energy rockets up in front of her, blowing her hair out of her eyes and claiming the sky above as its own as she watches a bright glow shed like shooting stars from a soaring Xatu. "Tuie!" Marie shrieks, joy and fear still mingling in equal measures until the Xatu Teleports into her outstretched arms and all there is is relief.

Until someone's voice makes its way into her brain.

"Look, I get it, but did ya have to punch me?"

The big blond guy is leaning against the rail, looking extremely casual for a man who just got punched in the jaw by an adrenaline-fueled teenager. There's definitely already a mark, which is so embarrassing. What's also embarrassing is the crowd, only now starting to whisper and move again, but before the distress of literally the whole world seeing her break down can really set in, she also sees… Pokémon, just starting to stand down. Psychic types, Flying types, a Haunter, a Magnezone- all moving back from the rail and towards their trainers. A Charizard passes the Starly to the boy she had been fighting and trundles toward her- no, toward the guy she punched.

And the guy watches her realize, and grins broadly. "We all help out, right? When and where we can."

"You're not mad?" Marie hates the smallness of her voice, hates the idea that everyone saw this happen, but so many people being ready to help…

She's absolutely not going to cry, though, no way.

The man shrugs. "I ain't like that. Stuff happens, y'know? You don't got enough power in a punch to be worried about anyway."

"I can hit harder!" Marie snaps indignantly, clearly still not thinking correctly. Luckily, that just makes the guy laugh.

"What're you tryna prove? Hug your Xatu, she did good."

"Marie!" Sunny runs over, grinning like a fool. "Haha, we fucking won!" She cheers as she hands Marie her ₽1000 of the prize money. "Oh, hey. Looking good, Tuie."

"Oh. I guess we did." Marie takes the cash quickly, lest Sunny see that her hands are shaking. "Wait, did we?"

Sunny nods, putting an arm around Marie's shoulders and guiding her toward the bikes. "Probably. That's the conclusion the kid and I reached. But that's not important right now. What's important is that we just won our first Sky Battle! Oh, and Tuie evolved. That's cool too."

In the distance, Marie hears a faint "What's wrong, Daniel?" as the boy they fought is talking to an older woman, possibly his grandmother.

"And also, we have a job to get back to. Packages won't deliver themselves!" Sunny quickly gets on her bike.

Suspicious.

Marie takes out her wallet and shoves ₽2000 at the guy she punched. "Give this to the Starly kid? Please? I have to go-" Getting her shaky legs out from under her is tough, and her heart lurches as Tuie slips out of her grasp, but the Natu- Xatu- only hovers just above her head until Marie gets on her bike.

With a Xatu in her slipstream and a Sky Battle draw under her belt, it really seems like things are looking up.

Chapter 5 #5 - Maladaptive, Possibly

Marie lays awake that night, far longer than the girl she shares the double bed with. Not because of Sunny- Marie has gotten used to sleeping next to her over the past few days, and would tolerate most things in the name of saving money- but because of the tangle of emotions lodged in her chest, waiting to be sorted out.

Starting with...

Tuie evolved. That's excellent. That's what she'd hoped for, been aiming for. But that changes things, doesn't it? Being able to fly opens up a whole new range of strategies, and her size means she can no longer hide behind teammates or rocks to charge Cosmic Powers. How big is she now, anyway?

Her PokéDex is on the floor somewhere, but her phone is on hand and the tie-in app is still downloaded. She cups the screen with one hand to mitigate the brightness in the otherwise dark room. Four foot seven and thirty-three pounds. And a new move? Air Slash coming in to replace Peck, okay. More range. But that's much, much bigger than she was. She probably can't even perch on Marie's shoulders anymore. But she can fly! She can be out more, so easily! Marie can spend more time with her!

That's good. It's really good.

Because almost losing her was terrifying.

Her father never talks about the times he has almost lost his Ivysaur, and Marie is teetering on the precipice of understanding why. There are reasons Tua is small for an Ivysaur, there are reasons Alton's back is criss-crossed with old scars, there are reasons he wanted Marie to journey through as few wild areas as possible. But as today has proven: danger is everywhere. And she will not be telling her father about this not because she thinks he would demand her return, or that he would be angry with her, or anything of the sort- she will not be telling him for the same reason he has never shared his own experiences.

Because it is difficult.

Because it is painful.

Because for her to be able to share, she has to come to terms with every choice, every action, every millisecond in that whirlwind of events and face down the terrifying what-ifs and the even more horrifying at-faults.

Maybe Alton never managed it.

It will be a while before Marie tries.

All she can do in this moment, in the quiet dark, is silently make a commitment. A commitment to her Pokémon: to train them, to play with them, to study them. To get to know them as individuals and members of their species. To fully understand their capabilities and limits.

To never come that close to losing one again.

Trick Mansion
The Trick Mansion is a building June has heard a lot about in passing, but never once has she thought much of it. Now that she's standing in-front of it though and she's in no rush to get to Mauville, what's the harm in giving it a go?

The doors swing open and a grand hallway is made visible. It's awfully quiet, and nobody is around to greet her. June makes sure to leave her flip-flops by the door and swaps them for one of the many pairs of slippers laid out in-front of her- being a very lavish mansion and all, it'd be a crime to walk in wearing flip-flops.

She notices the many closed doors through the halls as she walks through it, curious if these rooms serve any purpose. Does anyone actually live here or is it merely a tourist attraction? Either way, she'd expect to see at least one other person, especially in the vacant receptionist desk. She's given some clues at least, as a sign in-place of an actual attendant gives instructions that June reads carefully before proceeding.

Alongside the instructions is a list of Pokemon, and while she doesn't recognize some of them, a particular few stand out to her

Combee and Cutiefly are really hard-working creatures when it comes to gathering honey and pollinating flowers. Once you walk past this door you'll find yourself in front of a huge flower field dedicated specifically to this and kept alive thanks to the effects of Grassy Terrain.

Hanging from the ceiling, you'll find honeycombs belonging to the Cutiefly, while in the wall at the other end of the room is a beehive, which houses the Combee. Your passcode is on that side of the room as well, but behind a wall of Vespiquen grubs at the center that will go back to their beehive once you find the two missing grubs that have wandered off to explore the flower field. While Vespiquen grubs are weak and unable to survive without their queen or collective energy from other grubs, these ones are kept alive thanks to Grassy Terrain's healing attributes, so don't worry about them. To catch these grubs you have to use the nets at the entrance of the room.

Consider that these Cutiefly are very protective of their workplace and will attack without hesitation if any of the flowers are damaged.

Trainers that decide to take on this challenge must use a single Pokemon. Breaking this rule will disqualify you.

-Trick Master II

A wide field of flowers is visible when the elevator door slides open. For the puzzle that awaits her, Einstein floats close to June as she was instructed to have one Pokemon by her side.

"Goodness, it's so lovely!" June fawns while Einstein floats a bug net over to her. "Oh, um, right. I shouldn't forget what we're tasked with, my bad…" She pushes her glasses up, a tad embarrassed.

According to the instructions provided by this Trick Master character, the duo are supposed to seek out two Vespiquen grubs that have gone missing among the flowers, and return them to a wall of Vespiquen grubs that block off the other half of the room. Admittedly seeing so many flowers inevitably reminds her of a certain someone, but seeing all the grubs gathered further down as well as a few wandering Cutiefly takes her mind off it. Bug Pokemon never fail at grabbing her attention.

While the puzzle does seem pretty easy on paper, seeking out the grubs is a lot harder than it sounds. As it is, Combee are only a foot tall, so having to seek out grubs that are less than 6 inches among the flowers is a bit of a chore. The tedium of that starts to sound like too much for June, but fortunately for her she has Einstein, a Pokemon capable of seeking things out from six miles away.

"Do you think you'd be able to do that Einstein?" The psychic-type nods, and June smiles as he scans for the Vespiquen grubs, something that doesn't take long at all. The second he detects one of the grubs zipping around a flower he zooms over, preparing to swing down the net over the grub before June yelps out a "Wait!"

"Einstein! Um, please be careful so as to not damage the flowers!" She cautions. "The Trick Master said the Cutiefly are very protective of them, and I wouldn't want to upset them!"

Einstein looks at June as though he's saying "Sorry", and once he looks back towards the flower the grub is out of sight, likely having been scared away by the sudden movements. The psychic-type sighs, so June gives him a quick pat on his "wing"covers for comfort.

"I think I've noticed another problem as well… Even though you're capable of handling objects now, it seems as though you struggle to do so carefully." June lectures. "B-but I don't mean that to be rude or anything! It's like… it's like how a human child still developing their motor skills can walk and move about, but do so in a clumsy way. These types of things take time to master, and there's nothing wrong with that. So in that case, perhaps we can put our strengths together: I can catch the grubs while you search for them!"

Einstein nods to signal his approval, and June grins. "Perfect!" When the Orbeetle floats his net back to the rack he picked it up from, the two start from square one as Einstein leads his trainer to one of the grubs until they spot one peacefully snoozing in the center of a sunflower.

"There it is!" June lets out as she crouches to get a better look at it. "And it's so adorable! But what to do… I don't want to simply walk over and swing my net at it, that could potentially damage the sunflower. Perhaps Einstein could use Confusion to carry it over to me, but after what we just discussed, I'm not sure if that'd be a good idea against such a delicate Pokemon… hm, how to lure it out."

Her index finger rests on her lip for a while before pulling up Orbeetle's Pokedex entry for ideas. She scrolls through the page multiple times before settling on a strategy.

"Well here goes- Einstein, do it!" A supersonic is shot in the grub's general direction, but rather than being shooting at it, the small soundwave instead slowly passes right past the flower it sleeps in, waking the grub from it's nap. Curious to investigate the source of the soundwave, the grubs buzzes forward only to see nothing really standing out…

That is until June, who had been laying belly-first on the ground, suddenly jumps forward and swoops the mouth of the net towards the grub before it can react. The very second it's caught, June sprints over to the grub wall so her catch can assimilate with the swarm.

"Good job, Einstein!" June cheers. "Now we just have one more to take care of…"

The second grub looks to be more of a challenge, speeding around the field. Just like before, June takes her time concocting a plan, and the one she cooks up is worth trying out.

The grub, minding its own business, buzzes freely around the field, not a thought in the world. As it approaches the path that splits the very large flower bed, June jumps out to startle it, causing it to flee in a state of panic. June didn't really make any effort to catch it though, and when the grub attempts to fly away, she calls out a "Reflect!" Suddenly, a rectangular barrier manifests in its trajectory, and the grub flies straight into it. It does it's absolute best to pass through it, creating a bulge in the barrier to show for its efforts, but it's useless. The clear rubbery wall can't be broken by such a teeny creature, and the grub is hurled backwards… right into the mouth of June's bug net!

Upon being returned to the grub wall, June and Einstein are thanked by a series of upbeat buzzing sounds- which June just finds to be the absolute cutest thing in the world- before they collectively leave for their hives, finally opening up access to the back of the room. A few stick around, all carrying eggs that they present to the Pokemon trainer.

"Oh, um, are those for me?" The grubs nod in unison and place them in June's palms. "Oh, really!? Well, um, thank you very much then! Um, no, really, I appreciate it very much, it's, well-"

The grubs fly away before she can finish. June sighs and her attention is turned towards the three tiny eggs that sit in her palm, which are enough to put a smile that spans from ear to ear on her face. Though there are things she needs to worry about, like how she can carry these around without crushing the, those thoughts lay in the back of her mind as she's preoccupied with her reward.

Natsuko Soyokaze
Saturday, October 3rd; afternoon
Mauport Bridge

Tsu lets out a sigh as she sits on a bench, sipping a fancy soda and looking at the water. Somehow, she feels cheated even though she knows she probably got a good deal. But she'd only wanted to buy one ball for Popplio, not two.

The Water type in question is balancing her new beach ball on her nose, tossing it and catching it again quite expertly. Tsu looks down at the Dive Ball in her hand, enjoying it a lot less.

"Suppose I should come up with a name for you now, huh?" Tsu finally says something to Popplio, who tosses the beach ball at Tsu as she turns to look. Tsu has to quickly drop either her soda or her Dive Ball to catch it.

She really wishes she'd dropped the ball instead.

"Hey, that was expensive! It was like, imported or something!" She grabs the glass bottle, looking sadly at what little remains. She gulps it down, tossing the beach ball back to Popplio. This time, Popplio balances herself on top of the ball.

"You're talented, I'll give you that. I just wish you weren't such a diva. Hey, how about I call you Diva?"

Popplio sticks out her tongue and makes a gagging sound, which Tsu understands as "try again".

"It was mostly a joke, come on..." She tosses the ball in her hand, trying to think. "Pokédex says Popplio are good at singing, who's your favorite singer?"

Popplio belts out a few notes, which sound pretty good, but Tsu doesn't recognize the tune.

"Don't know that one, sorry. The only musical term I know is 'adagio', would that work?"

Popplio thinks it over, then barks once, nodding.

"Perfect. Your name is Adagio, now. Hehe, can I call you Dagi for short?"

Adagio raises an eyebrow, not amused.

"I didn't hear a 'no'. Come on, Dagi, let's get moving." Tsu unfolds the bike with a grin, scooping Adagio into the basket. She rolls her eyes and accepts it, holding her beach ball steady.

"I had more questions for that fisherlady, but somehow I doubt she'll still be there. So I guess we'll go check out this 'Trick House' on our own. It sounds cool, right? You like tricks?"

Adagio sulks for a moment, then barks quietly in the affirmative.

🏠 🏠Soon...🏠 🏠

Tsu finds herself outside the Trick House, finding it much more impressive up close. She can't imagine living in a house like this, and with a name like "Trick House", it must be a tourist attraction or something.

Somehow, an actual bicycle is easier to cart around than that beach ball. Tsu ends up deflating it and tucking it inside her backpack as she heads inside, but she isn't looking forward to blowing it up and deflating it every time.

"Wow... what a mansion!" She looks around the grand foyer, noting the doors lining the walls. "I mean... I've only ever been in one other mansion, back in Celadon, but it's still impressive. That one was like... I thought they were giving out Eevees, but it was actually like a game company or something? And I was technically trespassing, but they were pretty cool about it..."

Adagio in her arms huffs in annoyance, not interested in the story. Tsu takes the hint, instead looking toward the reception desk.

"Solve the mystery of a room to obtain a passcode... Hey, that sounds fun! You like mysteries? You see a lot of mystery, living under a bridge?"

Adagio doesn't answer, looking up at Tsu with disdain.

"Don't get sassy with me, you're the one who wanted to come with me. This is bonding, I'm trying my best, here."

Adagio sulks, but mutters what could be an apology.

"Alright, let's find a room we like, yeah? Or we could just pick randomly." She wanders down the hall, stopping at an elevator at the end. "Perfect! Just pick a button and that's where we'll go."

She drops her backpack outside the elevator, sending out Cyrano to protect it. "I'll be back for you, Cy. Guard my stuff?"

Cyrano slowly turns to face north, but nods once he's done.

"Knew I could count on you. We'll be back!" She steps onto the elevator, looking at the buttons. They are numbered 1-6, along with a roof and two basements. "So, what are you thinking? Floor two because there's two of us? The roof so we can get the best view? The spooky basement?"

Adagio reaches out with a flipper, swiping at the closest button without looking. They aren't designed for flippers, so Tsu has to press the button for her, noticing she swiped at B2.

"Ooh, the sub-level, very mysterious! Who knows what waits for us in the Inner Sanctum?" She lowers her voice dramatically at that last part, giggling as Adagio facepalms.

The elevator takes longer than she'd anticipated, and she actually gets a bit anxious. Despite her flippant attitude, she has no idea what she's getting herself into. She just walked into a stranger's house and took an elevator to the lowest portion. She's read horror stories that start similarly, and they didn't end well for the protagonist.

She actually jumps when the elevator stops, peering out cautiously as the doors open. She takes a few cautious steps onto a stone floor, seeing a plaque attached to the nearby stone wall.

"Huh? What's this? 'Pokemon from the Onix evolutionary line are known for their great size and amazing digging ability. After evolving...' yeah, okay... sense vibrations... 'this specific Steelix is fond of visitors...' okay, here we go: 'To complete the challenge you have to find the passcode at the end of the maze and then return to the elevator while avoiding being spotted by Steelix or distract it if it spots you...'. Great. Sounds easy enough. What's this? 'Since this is the most dangerous room in the Trick House, it's only fair to allow challengers to use every tool they have, as such, there's no pokémon limit rule...' ...wait, most dangerous!?"

She steps back from the plaque, looking back at the elevator, then down the tunnel ahead. Stone steps lead down to a dirt floor, while the stone walls come to a T and extend past her field of view.

"Okay... I'm in a maze. And there's a giant metal snake in here with me. This... maybe this wasn't such a good idea. I could go back. Yeah. I can just go back up, forget I ever saw this."

But she doesn't. She creeps closer, taking a hesitant step down the stairs.

"This is a bad idea. I'm supposed to be on vacation! This is just me getting back to my roots, having fun! I'm literally two steps from danger!" She looks at the dirt floor, her heart thumping loudly in her chest.

"But... to take those steps... to choose the road less taken? Am I ready for that? Or do I play it safe?" She hesitates, and Adagio looks up at her, unsure herself of the right choice.

"No!" And she leaps off the stairs, both feet hitting the dirt floor. Instantly, she feels a rumble beneath her, and she rushes to the end of the hall. She makes a snap decision, turning left, and follows the hallway to a corner where a map hangs on the wall. She takes a moment to look at it as the rumbles grow more intense, then darts around the corner.

She's in a wide corridor, littered with large boulders, but barely has time to process that before she hears a great disturbance behind her, feels the very ground erupt as something tears through the dirt. She throws herself to the side, taking cover behind a boulder as the Steelix lets out a mighty bellow.

She covers her mouth, not sure if she's muffling her breathing or stopping herself from screaming, but either way her goal is to be quiet. She presses herself against the rock as she hears a shuffling sound, looking up to see Steelix's head looming over her. It's looking forward, not down at her, and she realizes it didn't see her. She also notes that the ceiling is much higher than she'd thought, wondering how far underground she actually is right now.

She pushes that from her mind as Steelix moves forward, slowly pushing herself to her feet. She'd heard that Steelix are massive, but this one doesn't seem much bigger than Stacy, maybe 25 feet long to her 21? Once most of its body is past her, she quickly moves to the other side of the boulder. Steelix stops moving, looking back toward where Tsu was hiding.

Did it hear me?! Tsu panics slightly, almost dropping Adagio as the Popplio scoots up her torso to look over her shoulder. Tsu feels a slight rumble in Dagi's chest, but doesn't hear anything when she opens her mouth. A faint bark echoes from across the room, and Steelix turns away from Tsu's hiding spot to investigate.

Tsu looks at Adagio in wonder, unaware that she could do that. Dagi impatiently points back down the other tunnel, so Tsu makes a break for it.

As soon as she takes her first step, Steelix turns round again. Tsu realizes that "sensing vibrations" means that it can feel her footsteps, like those worms in that movie she'd seen that one time. And its several sequels...

Regardless, it gives her an idea. As she sprints down the hallway, she hears Steelix start following her. This way also ends in a corner, also with a map, which makes her wonder why the maze started with an intersection if both directions gave the same result. She turns the corner, racing past more boulders, and quickly hides behind one before Steelix can round the corner as well. "Quick, do that thing again!"

Adagio barks again, the sound echoing in the vast chamber. Tsu forces herself to breath slowly, quietly, as she hears Steelix behind her. It doesn't stop, moving almost casually as it slithers past her and around the next corner. Tsu cautiously takes a step, freezing when she hears Steelix stop. If it comes back, it'll see her for sure, so she risks another step. No response from Steelix, so she keeps going, as quietly as she can. She's about halfway back to the T when she hears Steelix dig underground again.

Now what? Okay, think, Natsuko. It can hear your footsteps, unless you move super slow. Dagi can confuse it with her neat voice throwing trick, but it'll get wise eventually. Maybe you can send your other Pokémon out, give it something else to chase. ...no, bad idea. I don't want to get separated in a maze. Plus, Rip would definitely pick a fight, and we don't want to anger it. Okay, so... Rip is out. So is Stacy, if we're avoiding making it mad. Cy is back in the lobby, so it's just Dagi, Shiny, and me. No problem.

She pulls out her phone, looking back at the map on the wall. It's too far to read clearly, but the zoom function fixes that issue. The map shows where she is, and where the passcode is, too. Convenient. She thinks she sees a way to it, and that either path from the start will take her there. In fact, the start of the maze is one big loop with branches. Seriously, who designed this place?

She starts forward again, and doesn't feel the rumbling of an underground Steelix. Maybe I lost it? Maybe slow and steady will win this race.

She rounds the corner again, coming face to face with Steelix. It grins when it sees her, looking very smug.

"What?! Oh, you tricked me!" It must have just pretended to go underground, and slowly went around the loop to cut Tsu off. Adagio puffs up as she prepares a Water Gun, but Tsu turns and runs before she can fire, calling out Shiny and awkwardly hopping onto her back. "Go, Shiny, go!"

Steelix gives chase, moving with purpose now that it's seen her. Shiny uses Flame Charge to boost her speed, Steelix momentarily distracted by the flaming hoofprints as Tsu and crew once again reach the boulder room. It follows them, suddenly gaining a surge of speed as some of its spiky bits fall off.

"What's it doing?! Shiny, get some distance with Agility!" Shiny glows as she runs even faster, jumping forward and twisting her body as they reach the corner, her hooves hitting the wall and letting her bounce off and keep moving without slowing. Tsu almost falls off, not used to Pony Parkour, and the technique catches Steelix off guard. The last thing Tsu sees before they round another corner is it looking surprised, then grinning with excitement.

Wait, is this just a game to it?

Tsu doesn't know where to turn next, but fortunately there's another map just ahead. Unfortunately, she has to stop to read it, giving Steelix a chance to catch up. She manages to at least figure out the next step, and Shiny charges down the right path, but Steelix dives back underground, resurfacing in front of them. Shiny rears up, forcing Tsu to tightly grip her mane with one hand and Adagio with the other, turning on her back legs to run the other way.

Steelix simply keeps moving as it emerges, effortlessly catching up to Shiny. Tsu looks back just in time to see Steelix duck its head just before impact, essentially nuzzling Shiny off her hooves. Shiny is knocked down from the collision, and Tsu is flung from her back. She tucks Adagio close to her chest as she curls up, rolling with the impact. Shiny lands nearby as Steelix pauses to look at them, grinning wide.

Tsu sits up, loosening her grip. "You okay, Dagi?" Adagio whimpers slightly, but nods. Tsu rises quickly to check on Shiny, who is already shaking her head to clear it, when Steelix moves forward and pushes her with its forehead, knocking her back down onto her butt.

She frowns as she gets her feet back under her. "Hey! Watch what you're do-"

Steelix pushes her again, cutting her off. It snickers as she falls, and Tsu understands that this is just a game to Steelix. Something of a cross between hide-and-seek and tag, and apparently it finds her falling over to be funny. Steelix looks at her expectantly, moving forward slightly when she starts to stand, no doubt about to push her again. She scoots back instead, causing it to hesitate, tilting its head slightly as it watches her. She quickly stands up, then throws herself back to the ground, and Steelix laughs at her.

This Steelix isn't as big as she's heard them to be. It enjoys games, and laughs at pratfalls. It gets mad when others don't play its game correctly. In other words, it's just a kid. A large, powerful kid that doesn't get to play very often because people are scared of it.

Tsu knows exactly what to do now. "Hey! You wanna play?"

Steelix nods excitedly as Tsu picks herself back up, Shiny and Adagio coming to her side.

"Okay, then how about we race? First one to the end of the maze wins. I bet Shiny is faster than you."

Steelix shakes its head, preening a bit in front of Shiny as though saying "nuh-uh, I'm faster".

"You think so? Prove it. On your marks..."

Steelix moves back toward the soft earth it emerged from.

"Get set..." Tsu climbs back on Shiny, holding Adagio close. "Go!"

Steelix immediately dives back underground, while Shiny sets off at a fast trot. "Now we just need to make it to the end. Let's try to move quickly, before it figures us out."

The maze isn't actually that large, despite being sized to accommodate Steelix. There are only a few more branches to navigate, and without Steelix on her tail, it's fairly simple to get to the end.

Steelix is waiting for her when they arrive, looking rather proud of itself.

"Aw, man! I thought we were gonna win for sure! You really are faster than Shiny!" Shiny's ears lay flat in annoyance, but she doesn't say anything. "You wanna have another race? See who can reach the entry first?"

Steelix shakes its head, then leans in and pushes Tsu off of Shiny. She winces when she hits the ground, and Steelix just grins.

"You wanna play tag, huh? I'm not good at tag." Steelix pouts at that. "What about hide-and-seek? I'll count to twenty while you hide, then I'll try to find you."

Steelix perks back up at that, nodding enthusiastically. Tsu gets back up, walking to the far wall where another sign is hung. "Okay, I'm gonna face this way, you go hide. One, two, three..."

Immediately, she hears Steelix use Dig again. If this were a real game, she'd call shenanigans on that, but she instead pulls out her phone to take a picture of the passcode.

"...nineteen, twenty! Ready or not, here I come!" She starts heading back the way they came, following the slightly charred hoofprints Shiny left as they ran. This will be easier than I thought! Why didn't i suggest this first?

She's roughly halfway back when she feels the ground rumble again. She stops, looking around the area. Steelix is peering up out of the dirt, and Tsu fears the game may be up if she doesn't think fast. "Hmmm... now where could... a-ha! Found you!" She points directly at Steelix, who sheepishly pokes its head out of the dirt.

"I almost didn't find you, you're good at this. But now it's my turn to hide. Okay?"

Steelix nods, quickly emerging only to shove its head back underground. It smacks its tail against the ground, counting out much faster than she had. She realizes she doesn't have much time, hopping back on Shiny to make a mad dash for the entrance. She makes it to the boulder room when she hears Steelix roar. Not an angry roar, just its version of "ready or not". She hops down, ducking beside the boulder she'd hidden behind when Steelix first emerged. She's so close, she could just run for it...

But Steelix would hear, and it would know she'd tricked it. And she can't do that to a lonely kid who just wants a friend. I've been there. It sucks.

Shiny nuzzles against her, probably figuring out her thoughts from her expression. Adagio looks toward the exit and barks impatiently, apparently not as good at reading the room. Tsu shushes her. "Keep it down! You're gonna give away our spot!"

They soon hear the shuffling sound of Steelix, who grins upon spotting the trio.

"Aw, you found us. I thought you'd come from the other way. Wanna play again?"

Steelix looks around the room, then to the corridor behind Tsu. The gig is up, it knows where they are. It shakes its head no.

"We can play something else. Wanna chase us around the loop again?"

Another head shake, and Steelix leans in. Tsu braces to be pushed over again, but Steelix pauses, then gently pushes its nose to her chest. It's a sincere "thank you" even if it makes Tsu's heart pound a little faster.

Steelix suddenly pulls back, making a roar that sounds like "oh!" It dives back underground, leaving Tsu confused.

"Should... should we go? Should we wait? What are we doing?"

Adagio barks, pointing to the exit again. Tsu hesitates, then starts heading that way. She's out of the boulder room and heading for the exit when she hears Steelix resurface. It cries out, and she rushes back.

It sighs when it sees her, pushing a rock toward her. It's a big rock, roughly the size of her torso. And shaped like an egg. "Wait, is this an Egg?"

Steelix nods, pushing the Egg closer to her. "Whoa, back up, wait a minute... you're giving me this?"

Steelix nods, pushing her again. She stumbles back, but Shiny catches her. Steelix nudges the Egg closer again, so she takes it.

"Oof, this is heavy... uh, thank you? I promise I'll do my best to take care of it."

Steelix smiles, then heads back underground.

Tsu waits a moment, then heads back to the exit. "I have no idea how to raise an Egg. Hopefully Aunt Nyamo can give me some advice."

She returns Shiny and Adagio as she boards the elevator, standing in silence as it begins heading back up. She has to adjust her grip on the Egg a couple times, as it's still pretty heavy. It even feels like a rock, but that makes sense, it's probably for a Rock type.

Cyrano is waiting exactly where she left him when she steps out of the elevator. He turns to her, stopping when he sees the Egg. He's hard to read, but it seems more like surprise than anything else.

"Yeah, don't ask. I don't know either." She tucks the Egg into her backpack, returning Cy to his ball before putting it on. With the bicycle there too, it's very heavy and unwieldy, so she unfolds the bike and puts her pack in the basket. Hopefully it won't leave a tire mark in the carpet, or the Trick Master won't mind too much if it does.

Making her way to the computer, she puts the code in. She didn't really read the rules, so she's surprised when putting in the code causes a panel to open and reveal a TM.

"Sandstorm? I guess that makes sense. Thank you, Trick Master!" She waves at a nearby camera, tucking the disk into her bag. With two new gifts in her bag and now an old song in her head, she heads back toward Mauport as the sun starts getting low.

Junko "June" Enomoto
Saturday, October 3rd
Afternoon
Route 110
For completing the Trick Mansion puzzle, June was rewarded a TM for Dual Wingbeat, a move that somewhat makes sense for a room populated by Combee and Cutiefly. Now without much else to do, she heads straight over to the Ranger Check-in station in-front of the entrance of Route 110.

"Hiya! My name is Ranger Diya!" A pink haired, tan skinned Pokemon Ranger enthusiastically greets. "What's yours?"

"Well my full name is Junko Enomoto, but everyone calls me June."

"Nice to meet you June! You're just about to enter Route 110, the land bridge spanning from here aaaaaaall the way to Mauville! Isn't that just so super cool!?"

"Um, well I suppose so, but that does seem like it'll be quite the walk…" June responds, already planning out the details of the trip in her head.

"It might seem like a long time, but it'll all be over before you know it! You just need to follow these rules and you'll be all set!"

"The most important rule of all is no battling!" Ranger Diya crosses her arms to form an "X". "The ecosystem here is delicate, and important to preserve, and battling can mess that up real bad!"

"Rule number two: Only two Pokemon per trainer!" Diya says, holding up two fingers, "To be extra sure trainers don't battle, we only allow traveling trainers to keep two at a time! If you have three or more, don't worry! You can leave them here and we'll take super good care of them before returning them to you in the North Station!"

"Rule three: No catching wild Pokemon! Like with rule one, we want to keep the environment safe, and we don't want to take any Pokemon out of their habitat for that reason. To make sure nobody does that, we require all empty Pokeballs to be left here along with your other Pokemon! This also goes for Pokeballs that belong to your two Pokemon of choice! The SCAN feature on the HRD app will be disabled on this route as well."

"And lastly, avoid the scary building at all costs- you'll know what it is when you see it! It's very dangerous, so don't even think about it! Any questions?"

"Um, actually I would like to know if Pokemon eggs are to be left here as well? I ask because I received three Combee eggs, well, actually it's more like a single egg since a Combee is made of three-"

"Pokemon eggs will be cared for here as well! Any other questions?" June shakes her head. "Perfect! Now then, who's going with you? I assume this adorbs little Orbeetle is one of them?"

"Mhm." June nodes. "That just leaves…" Thinking of a second takes a little more effort. Sting and Heracro- Joe won't even be considered, as bringing them to such a delicate ecosystem would be utterly disastrous. Arceus knows Joe would wrestle everything that mildly upsets him and Sting would wipe out several local populations. That just leaves Chip and Kit.

"Oh, actually I forgot something! My bad!" Ranger Diya winks, sticking her tongue out as she very lightly knocks on the top of her head. "How could I forget the best part, the super duper fun activity you can do that's a past-time for any traveling trainer!"

"What might that be?" June speculates on what that could be. Given the environment, it could be biking, kayaking, swimming, anything along those lines. But what it turns out to be is far less exciting.

"You get to pick up trash!" Ranger Diya shouts way too cheerfully, handing a bag and a trash claw on one end to June. "So exciting, isn't it!?"

"Umm… I suppose so, yes." June pauses and grabs the items from the ranger so she doesn't seem rude. She isn't a stranger to volunteer work though, so she doesn't really mind. But now that she knows she'll be picking up trash, she knows who her second Pokemon will be.

"A Wimpod, huh!"

"Mhm." June nods. Chip cautiously eyes the Ranger, slowly backing away "They're known by some as nature's cleaner, since they're so good at seeking out trash. Everything in their path is either eaten or stored for later, regardless of how edible or rotten the trash in-question is. They also-"

"Wow, that… sure seems like it'll be helpful!" Ranger Diya interrupts. "I doubt you'll have a hard time feeding him, huh? Buuuuut now that you've got your two Pokemon partners, let's have a look at your Trainer ID and any other Pokeballs you have and you'll be all good to go!"

June does feel somewhat bad about having to leave behind three of her Pokemon, but at least it'll be easier for her to manage. As instructed, she hands over her ID for inspection as well as the Pokeballs Yamaguchi gave her. Einstein, who had been carrying the Combee eggs atop his shell, floats them over to Ranger Diya, who is kind enough to place them in an incubator. Hopefully they'll be returned to June as she left them.

Route 110 would be another highlight of nature in the Hoenn region if it weren't for all the little polluting the lengthy land bridge. It's overwhelming how much there is, but it's nothing June can't handle. "My, what a mess…" She says to herself while placing any nearby trash in her canvas bag. The piles are made up of used wrappers, food waste, machine parts, screws, cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and unidentifiable objects alike, among other things. But as gross as it can get, having something to focus on makes it so that June can carry out her task without giving it any thought. Einstein helps out by floating over large chunks of waste into the bag, and Chip simply consumes just about anything in his path.

About an hour or so into their clean-up, June can't help but notice her Wimpod scratching at her ankles. "Oh, Chip, is something the matter?" She asks before noticing the shiny object Chip carries in his mouth. She kneels down to get a better look at it, and gasps when seeing the object is a stone with a leaf engraving in it.

"Goodness, it's so beautiful!" She says, picking the stone up. "How did this end up among so much waste? Whatever it is though, I think it would be a good gift to give someone." She puts the mysterious stone in her backpack, expecting to return to clean-up duty but that's interrupted by a discovery from Einstein. He holds up a large black disc and hands it to June. She scans over it, looking through the hole in the center, and flips it around to see a label explaining its purpose.

"Interesting… so it's like a Technical Machine, except it's only usable once. This one is for the move Waterfall? What does that do?" Using her Pokedex app, she looks the move up, and upon seeing it's description her eyes widen. "Wow, that's quite a powerful attack! Compared to anything any of my Pokemon know, anyways. And it looks like Chip can learn it too!" The Wimpod, in the middle of snacking on a half empty bag of Doritos he found, rotates 360 degrees to face his trainer when hearing his name called. "It seems to work in a similar fashion to Aqua Jet, just trading off speed for power. I unfortunately don't own a TM Machine, but once we have access to one it'll be so exciting!" Chip doesn't look very interested, only responding with a few blinks, and crawls over to a moldy piece of bread. He might not care too much now, but maybe once he sees how much damage he can do with it he'll change his mind.

Cleaning duty continues for a while, probably a few hours by now, but June lost track of time a long time ago. The only thing worthwhile that happened was how she found a crate of Haban berries that was just lying on the ground, and while a decent amount of them were severely bruised, ten or so looked to be in perfect condition. Growing up, her grandma had it ingrained into her to never waste food, so it was only natural she'd take those with her as well. They'll be a good ingredient to have for dinner later that day.

Soon enough the sun begins to set, and that's when June decides to pick up a little more trash before calling it a day. She hurriedly picks things up from a small pile near her feet, but a peculiar object is spotted in it.

"Oh my, what is this?" A large fang is held in her palms, and June is fascinated by her discovery. She looks through the Pokedex app to see if it can provide any information on what Pokemon it belongs to, and when that shows nothing she turns to her standalone Pokedex deceive- something she rarely, if ever, uses. That doesn't even identify any specific species it belongs to, and instead displays a variety of Pokemon it could belong to. She's probably not going to find any answers, but given the mystery surrounding it, maybe it's a collector's item that sells for a lot? When she feels a subtle yet powerful energy pulsing through it as she strokes the fang, she knows for a fact that it's not garbage, and stores that in her backpack along with her other finds. Who knew such interesting things could be found here of all places?

But now that she's picked up her share, it's time to set camp up, and it looks like the spot they're on has just enough room for that. While she's pitching her tent to the ground, Einstein zooms up to her with a rectangular case in his grasp. "Oh? Are you trying to show me something?" Einstein nods, and moves the case closer to June's face, opening it up to reveal six Pokeballs with a lime green top decorated with a pattern.

"That's… interesting you'd find these here. Who would throw these away?" The case is delivered to June's palms, where she feels the weight of it once it's released from Einstein's grip. The top piece of one is detached from the base, but the others only look a tad dirty. "These are Friend Balls, special Pokeballs hand-crafted in Azalea Town. They're not something I'd expect to see in Hoenn… I wonder if someone bought these from Mr. Yamaguchi?" June briefly contemplates if she should take them with her too, but decides against it and returns to putting the tent up. Einstein, baffled by this decision, picks it up again and holds it uncomfortably close to June's face.

"I know you mean well Einstein, but I shouldn't take those with me. It's against the rules to carry empty Pokeballs on Route 110, and I imagine that must apply here as well. I'd hate to get in trouble with the rangers…"

Einstein sighs out of frustration. Refusing free Pokeballs, especially Pokeballs that are apparently as special as these are, comes off as so illogical to him. Sure, it's against the rules, but it's not like the rangers will have any way of knowing she took them. They didn't search her bag during check-in, so what are the odds they'll do that when they check-out?

Thinking he knows what's best, Einstein stealthily flots the case into June's backpack while she's distracted with the tent, keeping in mind what she said about him being delicate when handling objects. It's certainly no easy feat, but Orbeetle aren't exactly slow learners. Thoroughly examining the bag helps him hide the Pokeballs in an obscure pouch hidden in another pouch. June likely won't see them until after they make it out of Route 110. She'll thank him later.

Thursday, October 1st @ 2030 - Littledale

Sitting down at a table in front of the Pokemon center with his new friend/mentor Sergei, Clint held his new Dell Badge in his hand, basking in the win he just pulled off.

"Nice work out there kid," Sergei began,

"Showed you can handle yourself at the very least. Next test for ya' is Mauville. Biggest city in the region, you're going to hate it. Take the one-oh-three east of here, then north up the one-ten once you get there."

"What about you Sergei, sticking around here," Clint asked.

"Me? No chance. I'm thinking its time to skip town, I'm done working for the Winston's. Going to try my hand at battling again, the itch is back for me, thanks for that by the way kid," Sergei replied,

"Just got a few loose ends to tie up, I might meet up with you again in Mauville."

"Sounds like a plan, see you there," Clint said.

Clint then knocked on the table with his fist, then stood up and walked back in to the Pokemon Center, he had to pack up and be ready to head out in the morning.

Friday, October 2nd @ 0900 - Route 103

Clint had left Littledale at the crack of dawn, determined to cover as much ground as possible. A part of him liked how familiar Littledale felt, but he would need to break through that notion, Clint's purpose on this journey was venture out into the world, instead of sitting in the world he was used to. By the sounds of it, nowhere was less like the place he grew up in than Mauville City. Clint wasn't a fan of the idea of visiting a giant metropolis, but he would have to learn to live with the fact.

He pondered his next moves while canoeing across a bay, with a wooden canoe rented from a shop on the water. For $1000, one-fifth of the prize for beating Merry, he was able to make his way across the bay, with the rest of Route 103 on the other side. With him out of their Pokeballs, he had Poliwag swimming alongside the canoe, with Grovyle and Ralts sitting in the front of the canoe. For obvious reasons, Clint left Charmeleon and the flame on his tail back in his Pokeball. Water was a little choppy this morning, but nothing too crazy, Clint was able to manage just fine.

It was still morning when Clint arrived on the other side of the bay, to a small settlement that was called Cottage Grove, at least that's what the attendant at the canoe rental shop called it. Clint walked through the quiet village, a few people out and about going through their daily lives. Clint wasn't in the mood to stop and socialize, but he supposed he needed to know what to expect up ahead.

That led him to a cabin on the main path, where Clint saw an man, most likely in his forties, chopping wood out front of the cabin. The man was bald, wearing a plain black t-shirt, and blue jeans. The man was dressed rather simply, and had a simple cabin and seemingly a simple life.

"Excuse me sir, how far till you reach Mauville," Clint asked, removing his hat while he did so.

"Two to Mauport, two more to Mauville from there, if you're going on foot," the man responded.

"Why's a guy like you going to Mauville anyways, seems like you'd be better off turning back around to Littledale."

"Got something to take care in the city," Clint replied.

The man glanced at the holster full of Pokeballs hanging from Clint's hip. "Ah, I understand,"

"Spent my whole adult life in Mauville, all I can say is good luck kid."

"Much appreciated mister," Clint said, tipping his hat.

"Would you like to rest for a bit here, my wife has just put some coffee on, sure we could find you something to eat as well," the man offered.

"No need to go through all that trouble just for me," Clint shrugged.

"Trust me, it would be my pleasure," the man insisted.

"Alright, I suppose you've sold me on it," Clint conceded.

Sitting at a handcrafted wooden table with his host, Clint sipped on a cup of coffee, listening to the man tell his life story to Clint. Sounds like he was in finance for a good chunk of his life, before moving out here with his wife to raise their children. Not a bad decision at all, especially since he was still able to make money consulting from time to time.

"What about you kid, what's your big plans," the man asked.

"Not sure I have any, just going to see where battling takes me for now, at the very least I can always say I took my chance," Clint replied,

"Don't wanna look back later in life and ask what if?"

"You got all the time in the world kid, go out there and find what matters most to you, and cherish it," the man added.

"My kids are going to be jealous when I tell them a real life Pokemon Trainer stopped by," the man chuckled,

"Their on a trip to Route 110 right now, to pick up some supplies."

"Sent them on a two day trip all by themselves," Clint asked.

"It's good for them, plus they're not alone, my Camerupt pulling the wagon is with them, one quick release pin and my Camerupt is free to defend them, plus I can track their location as well," the man had thought of everything.

"Well if I see them get in trouble I'll try and help out," Clint offered.

"Somehow I knew you'd say that," the man replied.

Clint finished his coffee, as well as everything on the charcuterie board that the man's wife left on the table.

"Well I appreciate your hospitality sir, I'm forever in your debt, however I must continue to make miles," Clint said.

"The pleasure was all mine kid, sorry for calling you kid but I didn't catch your name," the man said.

"Call me Clint, I didn't catch your name either," Clint replied.

"Niko, good luck on your travels Clint," Niko said, opening the door for Clint.

Clint put his boots back on, as well as his hat. Standing in the door way, Clint tipped his hat and said,

"Thank you Niko, best of luck to you as well."

With that, Clint was back on the move.
