Completing the pokedex is a huge task.
But it's possible and a great challenge!
But how do you start on your quest of completion?
This post will show you just how it's done.

    Step 1, Prepare
You will need a few high level pokemon with status effect moves and false swipe.
You will also need loads of pokeballs (it doesn't really matter what kind of pokeballs you choose)
You will need to do some trading.
    Repels are always handy.
Time of course, you're not going to complete the dex in 2 hours.
And of course you need a ditto (duh)

    Step 2, Starters
To start of your awesome collection of 'mons it might be a good idea to get the starters first.
Once you get all 3 starters and evolve them to the final evolution you're basicly done.
(But if you are a fancy person like me you breed those starters with a ditto so you get the other two forms of them as well. Think of me having a squirtle wartortle and a blastoise in my box)

Step 3, Choose your next path
I have two things you can choose
-You cath every pokemon from 1 type (for example i catch all the grass type pokemon then i catch all the water pokemon and the all the flying types)
-You catch every pokemon on the route and go the next and go to the next (and that goes on for a while)

    Step 4, Legendaries duhh
Legendaries are great, they are strong and high-leveled.
The only promblem though... If you want to catch those legendaries... ALL of them you're going to have a hard time.

Things you will need for legendaries
    -Quick balls
    -Ultra balls
    (Timer balls are optional)
    Moves like false swipe
Moves that paralize, put the target to sleep.

Step 5, complete that dex like a bawss

You did it now take a rest because you will now get even more balls.
    But bobby... Why would we?

    The National dex
    Jk

Step 6, Sure make it even harder
718 (i believe) to catch now.
I would just repeat the same tactics but now for the national dex.
I would reccomend clearing out one type at a time!
I wish you the best of luck with your dex!

Extra tip from Sopheria ^^ : Keep a list of all the Pokemon you still need to catch, and organize themby the method in order to catch them. For example, have a list of all the Pokemon you'll need to catch in-game, all the Pokemon you'll need to trade from other versions, all the Pokemon you'll need to migrate from previous generations, etc. This has been super helpful for me, because it lets me plan ahead of time which games I'll need to get and which ones I'll need to request for trade over in TC.

Well that's about it for this post
Maybe i'll post something more about the dex later.
    K bai

I understand that pokemon like mew are hard to get. But Japanse people have a lot of weird stuff.. The GTS is Also your friend ;)

I'd suggest another step: keep a list of all the Pokemon you still need to catch, and organize them by the method you'll need in order to catch them.

As Achromatic said, event Pokemon can't be GTS traded because they tend to hold special ribbons and those are blocked by the GTS servers. You will need to find alternative trading methods to get those Pokemon.
