How to issue move commands to a dependent event

This is something I'm having trouble with, and at this point in the game it's kind of important to the story. I'm not sure how the scripts for these things work so that's why I'm pretty sure it's going completely over my head.

So here's an example to clarify: You talk to Brendan, and he starts following you. Nice one. You want to tell him to turn up. Giving the move command to the event 'Brendan' hasn't worked, and removing him as a dependent THEN issuing the command doesn't work either because the first step just removes him from the map completely.

Anyone know how to do things with stuff?

If you want Brendan to move a certain way when he's dependent, you'd have to give the player a move route instead. However... You lose the ability to be specific.
I presume that when you say he's removed from the map, he disappears. That's not an error; it's simply because the event doesn't have anything to do anymore - it stops existing. It's an odd thing that happens when dependency is added and then removed; there's an explanation for it, though I'm not sure what it is.
When does this event take place after he starts following you? Almost immediately? It might be better to simply set up a normal NPC event with a simultaneous move route - the player and the event - and then set dependency afterwards.
