I don't understand the concept of Pikachu and the Gyms and the new Season

    Okay, I just watched a rerun of Ash's battle with the first gym leader.

    Why is it that pikachu can't beat those pokemon? Shouldn't Pikachu be like lv. 100 by now? And how is it that Paul's Chimchar can take Pikachu? Isn't Chimchar like lv. 12 or something?


    I don't get it...it makes no sense...the first gym should've been the easiest one and pikachu failed when it should've taken it out in one hit. I mean, there is no possibility Chimchar could take it and Pikachu couldn't. Does pikachu like reset and start at lv. 5 every new season?


    Also has anyone noticed that this new season is all about types? The first season was all about the pokemon themselves and even up to the 3 it was about the pokemon. Now it's about the types

    Ex:

    -Trainer sends out piplup-
    -Ash sends out pikachu-
    Brock: This battle should be easy for Ash since pikachu is an electric type and piplup is a water type!
    -Pikachu uses thunder and destroys piplup-
    Brock: Wow, that was an easy battle because Pikachu used an electric attack and piplup is a water type, therefore it was super effective!!

    This constant type comparison makes me want to stop watching pokemon. The other seasons (mainly the first) were cool..but now it is too cutesy and it doesn't even focus on the battles being cool and unpredictable. All it is is stuff we already know and predictable outcomes.

    Yes. Pikachu's level gets reset. Notice that it's forgotten Agility, but it may "learn" that move again later in the series. Besides, it's not actually the type that matters, it's the type of the moves that matter. It's not always about type that wins you battles anyway.

    iron tail pika learned it when ash faught roseanne in teh advanced series...
     
    pikachu is a huge marketting fatass.
    that explains everything and answers every questions that could possibly be asked about pikachu hahaha
     
    The anime isn't exactly like the games, so no-one has levels. I know that levels have been mentioned but they're irrevelant in the anime and wouldn't make sense there. The gyms are only low levels in the games because it would be stupid to have level 50s in the first town. In the anime you can start where you like and collect them in whatever order you want, Sunyshore if you wanted. So all the gyms are at the same "level" or toughness whatever.

    About Pikachu, yeah, its inconstant. Wins against Regice, draws with Elekid.

    Complaining that its consistant with the games...? Yeah, we need more "Aim for the horn!" But they ALWAYS say every water/electric battle episode "Oh yeah...water condust electricty! I forgot!" Except from the newer one's. But Ash hardly ever chooses his Pokemon by type anyway. I thought Ash was quite clever in the Roark battle to choose his Pokemon on their attack types.

    If you mean the comparisons itself...yes, Brock should have been killed off a LONG time ago.
     
    The Inverse Pikachu Leveling Principle

    Whenever hundreds of new Pokemon are all discovered at the same time, Pikachu loses one level for each new Pokemon. However, he never dips below Level 1, otherwise he'd die and it would be impossible to resurrect him.

    Theoretically, Pikachu is not the most invincible Pokémon out there and there're numerous factors which causes its defeats from time to time.
     
    also notice how Ash is OBSESSED w/ having fast pokemon its like if a poke isn't fast ti sucks, when speed isn't always needed...
     
    Not really. He's had Pokémon who aren't speed-oriented, but the speed issue may be because about 4 out of 6 of his Pokémon tend to be quite speedy. Yes, Pikachu included.
     
    Yeah that just hit me, back in season 1, when Ash first battled Brock at Pewter City, Pikachu still had Thundershock, near the end of the rematch Pikachu had Thunderbolt! If I remember: Ash: Pikachu! Thunderbolt! yeah, that was kind of odd. Ash just got Pikachu like 4 episodes before, and all of a sudden Pikachu has Thunderbolt? No doubt that Pika Power Surge in that episode increased Pikachu's electric attacks, but to learn Thunderbolt that early? Pikachu was probarly lvl 12 at that time, when Pikachu does'nt learn Thunderbolt til lvl 26. Sure Pikachu used Thundershock again in other sorten times early in season 1 but after that it was constant: Ash: Pikachu! Use Thunderbolt!. Since the anime is different from the games, That powersurge probarly raised him from 12 to 26, and when he fought Lt.Surge Pikachu learned Agility which it learns at lvl 33.
     
    I might agree with you on the power surge idea, but Pikachu isn't at any level. As Jorah said, there are no levels in the anime. If there are, they are not a concrete idea, like in the games. So you can't say that Pikachu is at level 26, because they don't measure levels like that.

    But yes, the writers play around with the strength of Pikachu if it is integral to the plot. Like if it would be more beneficial to have Pikachu lose, then they will have it happen so that Ash can train and do other things. If Pikachu wins, then the reason is because it was time for Ash to win his prize and move on to the next challenge.

    That's not really a focus on type- it's a focus on pointing out the obvious for the 8 year olds that watch the show.

    Also note that the pokemon series will be VERY predictable after we watched it for years, and most of us being now 14 and up...we're not as dumb as we were as kids.
    Remember this is a KIDS show and that in kids show...everything is predictable to people who have a brain....
    Plus water always has been beaten by electricity

    The problem is that they seem to be intentionally making Pikachu lose, just so they can say he's not universally strong. I can understand losing to the Elite members, or the Masters of the Pokeverse, but when they have Pikachu losing horribly to the most basic Gym Leaders when in the previous season, he was able to level an entire Gym in one attack, just to have some rivalry heat up, something's wrong with that picture.

    But at least they stopped using numerical levels. Because I'd hate for someone to say, 'It's over nine-THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!!!!'.

    Can't you see? Pikachu gets uber lazy from riding on Ash's shoulder all the time. I means he's like attached on there! From all that lazy-ness he stay the same level!

    Okay, seriously though. The anime is supposed to be about the tactics in the battles, not the levels. Thats how they can focus on a main character. One gym leader may be harder than others because they have harder tactics to follow. Overall, in the anime it's supposed to be an even match against any trainer, it's just the way you use your pokemon efficiently.
     
    I would expect Pikachu to be level 100+ in the anime, but the fact they don't really state what level they are. Nor do they even use the whole leveling system. o_O They usually gain skills and evolve at the randomest times. I miss the old pokemon, you hardly see them anymore. And it makes me wonder what happened to Primeape and Butterfree. o_O
