Wow, I never noticed that the female version looked so different. It looks better than the shiny ones imo.

Sadly, I'm one of those people, haha. I just did some search on "shiny Hippowdon" on Google, and its sprite seems to have shown up as green. Personally, I don't really like it; in my opinion, its color-scheme just don't suit the Pokémon, unfortunately. If it were brown--like its original form, but only a little darker and more saturated--then it would have looked a lot better, I'm positive.

It's crossed my mind a few times when I was playing the Gen IV games, and by the time I got Platinum, I had educated myself more in stuff like that. Luckily, I noticed that lack of the Shiny sparkle encounter thing, so it debunked my thought immediately. Still, it looks very much like what's expected from a Shiny, and might as well have been. Switch the female and Shiny colour schemes, in my opinion.

Oh man, this is the first time I've actually realized this. I don't like the Shiny one at all then, personally. >.<

This topic reminds me of this picture I saw a while back on Pokémemes:

Other than that... yeah, I'm not a big fan of species that can come in different colors naturally exactly because they can look like shinies, and I hate being disappointed :) . Florges, Gastrodon, Hippowdon and their pre-evolutions, I don't like you :D .

I died when i saw that xS

When i first saw the female version it didn't even cross my mind that it was shiny, though that was before i knew about shinies believe it or not. i have yet to encounter someone who has made that mistake, but i can see how it can happen. Not the biggest fan of pokemon like that either, they mess with my head :l

I agree. A friend gave me a shiny Hippo poke, which is neat, but sadly it is not one of the better looking shiny Pokemon out there.

I never had this problem, although I do recall fake rumours on how to get a shiny ___ back in primary school.

Also, a relevant comic from the awesome of awkwardzombie:

Kind of reminds me of how I thought that purple Spinarak was a shiny XD (dont judge me!!). I guess im not the only one to make such mistakes :p

Ah, I was definitely one of the ones that got fooled by the major differences between Hippopotas and Hippowdon when I first saw them. I love when we get easily identifiable differences between the genders of Pokemon, but I don't think any other Pokemon just switches colors as their difference, so it was definitely confusing.

This confused me as well. After encountering both black and brown Hippowdon but seeing no sparkles indicating a shiny, I got curious, researched on it and found out that it was the gender differences that caused the difference in colours. Funny though why only this particular Pokemon gets a major colour change based on gender. I don't see any others that get the same treatment.

Yeah same maybe I am just a psycho, but Idk how you can be a fan and not know that unless you haven't played the fourth generation. I clearly remember when that generation came out Hippowdon was one of the Pokemon they showed having specific differences. I guess it doesn't help that Hippowdon takes extra work to find. Anyway I prefer the colors on the male the female is too solid imo.
