I need help with vgc teambuilding

I really wanna get into vgc but i don't know how to build a good team since i'm pretty new to mainseries pokemon games (i finished Sword and played half of Emerald and Crystal).
I have some ideas for my team. I was thinking on making an anti meta team focusing on either Mawile, Espeon or Glaceon with Toxapex or Ferrothorn as wall pokemon. Trick room would also be pretty fun to do and i think it would work pretty well.

I would also like some help with getting into the circuit and finding tournaments and communities as well as how to get ready for tournaments. I have very little knowledge on vgc, so do'nt skip the basics and fundamentals. I would gladly practice-battle on showdown against whoever responds to this too if that person is ok with that but it's not needed.

Normally TPCi has a listing of all official tournaments, but have currently canceled all events through May because of covid-19. Might be able to find other events but you'll probably have to look around for those yourself. You can still get battling experience via Showdown and/or online battles on Sword/Shield though.

In order to make an anti-meta team, you have to first understand what the meta is. The two main ways to do this are to 1) use a meta team yourself and 2) look at usage statistics. Making use of both of these will give you an idea of what's commonly used, how it's used, etc. Many places dedicated to Pokemon battling will have a page listing sample teams, which are usually filled with pretty standard stuff. And if you don't already understand EVs, IVs, and natures, you'll need to do that too.

I'd highly recommend looking at some YouTubers as well. Especially CybertronVGC and WolfeVGC. They're very informative as usually explain why they make certain decisions.
