I hate posers like that. I know one too. She's Wapanese and I showed her the FMA movie.
She's like 'Wow! Does it take place in Japan?'
    '...no, Germany'
    'But, isn't it Japanese?'
    'so?'
'So why isn't it in Japan?'

Those kind of people piss me off.

    Anywho, real 'catgirls'? o.0

    If you're white, you're white. If you're Asian, you're Asian. That's it.

What did I say earlier? Terminate them with as much prejudice as you can muster on sight. xP

It was meant to be an analogy of true anime fans, not the posers who infest conventions.

um...ok then i guess i'll do one of my rare semi-long post thingys

First off, Names at PokeCommunity...understandable...i have a -kun in the name...
anywho, origins of this name...So back when AIM was the fad (maybe 5-7 years ago?), i forgot my password...again...and my email address was just changed a while ago so i couldn't use the "Forgot Password" thingy. Therefore i decided to come up with a new one. Anywho, i was in my digimon liking at that time (I had no cable) and after researching a bit on digimon, found a site with Frontier. New things were "Spirit Evolutions" so i figure why not...that or a year earlier i liked spirits from "Magic:The Gathering" well either way i had an interest in ghosts and spirits and supernatural stuff...so, my friends back then were all hackers so i added virus to the end, hence "Digispirit Virus"...along the way, more anime (You know, Fox Kids, Fox Box and all that stuff...)[and before you go contradict that, i wasn't allowed to watch simpsons or anything like that cuz they had swears in them...PBS, well, i kinda grew outa that by then...]

    Adding the Kun:
So, got cartoon network (already knew about japanese anime via CCS by then.) Blue and i meet, or rather before, people called me digi for short. So blue and i go joking arround with japanese Honorifics (cuz there are so many) and i thought digi-kun sounded good so it stuck XD.

From my point of view, the "american teenage culture" of today primarily focuses on:
Sports, Looks (Both of which main points are usually to impress the opposite sex)
TV (Mostly Cartoons and Prime Time Live-Action shows (Dramas)
    Games (Usually violent games)
    Computers (Mostly Internet & Games)
Music (only a select few i find decent/enjoyable to hear)
Porn (It's true you know...i think the stats are...54-64% of all the worlds' internet explorers are on a porn site at this momment).

Seeing as i'm only classed into Computers, Games, and TV a bit for the US, fell outa the pop culture here. Got into the Japanese Culture, regot into a bit of the Chinese (My origin) and watched a few Korean stuff. Music i found it more enjoyable (the music not the actual translations of the lyrics)...personally i'd rather not repeat the same topics in songs these days...from what i remember, sex, heartbroken, love confession, emo, etc.

    Now current listings for me:
    Best Cartoons: Japan (Anime)
Best Live-Action Drama: Japan (Fell apart (sadness) from 1 Litre of Tears)
    Best Live-Action Comedy: America
Best Live-Action Action: Actually a tie between Japan (Sentai) and America (Sci-Fi)
    Best Movies: America
    Best Soap Operas: Korea
Best Games: Japan (Yes, i'm a Nintendo/Sony fan)

Random Funny Fact: Half the American flags i see have "Made in China" somewhere printed on it. Sure tells a lot about our culture XD

Oh and one more thing...that catgirl theory is just screwed up...and way too exaggerated. Personally, i'd probably see more people outa Naruto, Inuyasha or another one of those neverending series than catgirls >>

Another random momment: Ever seen a girl dress up/cosplay as Ed (FMA)? XD actually it was pretty good o.o

and it's more of a 75% line between Otaku and Anime fans XD

    BTW digi's an Aisan...hate stereotypes >>

  • People who want to be something they are not... That makes me sick.

I'm a Pure-blood mexican, a true latin prince, I also love anime, but you don't see me going crazy with my katanas ( I collect them) or dressing like Inuyasha. I don't try to change my hair to blonde, or attemp to be a wannabe
people should be like god intended them to be like, but if they still want to change, let them, it is not going to hurt you.

  • You know, I think it's incredibly arrogant to demean people who apply parts of the anime culture to their life just because they're not Asian. It doesn't occur to many people that the anime fanbase may be acting out anime culture, not intentionally or unintentionally poorly mimicking Japanese culture. Too many people fall into the trap of thinking that anime Japan and real Japan are the same place, and if they ever take any time to actually research the culture, the language, the society, politics, economy, etc; they find out that they're two entirely different worlds. Anime is the beautification and idealization of many things that many cultures worldwide lack and long for, and anyone with an eye for quality and art should at least be able to see this.

The biggest defence mechanism of jocks against people who they don't understand is to attack them, pass them off with any number of popular labels that instantly categorize someone as inferior, an outsider, an undesirable, etc; and I've been incredibly surprised at how many jockish attitudes I've seen in this thread. I know I can't make any points that will resonate with anyone of that mindset in here because I don't have their flair for sharp hatred and complete convincement of their own superiority, so I won't bother to continue much on this point, but I will brush on the subject of cosplay. The point of cosplay is fun; people don't try to look good or look similar to any character, it's just one of those mysterious forms of entertainment that jocks don't understand that don't involve looking good and making sure everyone else knows that you look good. It's odd, it's inventive, therefore many people hate it.

This also ties into the incredibly foolish and racist Asian part of the debate; many Asians on the internet that I know have a complete self-absorption and superiority complex just because of their race and like to flaunt it wherever I go. I can't say that I've seen it much at this board, but many others I've been to it's rampant. Just think of all the little n00bs that have "azn" in their name...if the only possible way you can think to identify yourself is to flaunt your race, it's incredibly sad. I would be crucified if I went to a board and had a name that emphasized my whiteness; and somehow people think that I'm less deserving of being able to experience anime in my own way because of belonging to an inferior race. Anime has never been about race; anime characters are actually drawn to be as race-neutral as possible to give them more universal appeal; it's just the human image, and there are still people who are trying to portray it as the complete opposite. If you're Asian, fine, be as proud as you want of your heritage but don't use it as an excuse to claim personal rights to anime, and don't use it to raise yourself above a subculture. It's stupid, it's based on complete misinformation of what anime is even about, and it perpetuates prejudice that so many of us would be willing to bury forever if not for people bringing it up over such trivial reasons. Anime fans don't care what other people think; I could easily go on a tirade about how athletes, goths, etc. live their lives, but I don't see any point in it. There are just some people in the world so desperate to persecute another group of people that they'll turn on something completely harmless, something meant for enjoyment, appreciation, enrichment of life, just as long as their superiority complex can justify them seeing it as inferior to their own way of life. This is nothing new, this is just another example of common idiocy.

My username is from a anime series. I'm not really sure what to say so.........

There is a big difference between acting as an Asian and learning the culture. True it is a way of mocking one another. It is a fad that has been taken too far. The culture is one thing but copying things because you seen it from a series just because you like it is just pointless. Everything from food, clothes, everyday items, etc.For those who want to learn the culture it is something important and may make a difference in life.Cosplaying is okay and fun but overdoing is just making it pointless. But just acting as one is just plain disrespect. But other countries does it also around the world. So this is not something new. It shows no appreication to what you like. It's just basically liking something without even knowing what it is. Along as it is something that looks cool, it would just be copied. It's just a disease that is part of the social world and may always will be.

    It just can't be stopped.

  • I did not mean to start such a domesticated argument, I'm just stating my opinion and purpose. As I recall, since the T-Dome was taken away, we are allowed to create (possibly offending) discussion threads in Other Chat? So sue me, shoot me. Kaga, umm... with the whole Asian pride thing... I know exactly what you mean. I'm in advanced classes, so naturally I am surrounded by hardcore Asians. These are the people who still walk to school with their parents, who stay there until the bell rings, in case you don't know who I'm talking about. I've gotten used to socializing with a lot of them because I haven't anybody else to socialize with. (No, I do not dress or act anything like they do. I'm the only person in my classes who wears his pants even moderately tight, and probably the only person who's worn a black t-shirt in 3 years, but meh.) I've got... a friend whose AIM screenname is "AznLinkCloud", and another "krnwiseman". I'm not too fond of this at all.

I'm really really surprised you defended Anime/Manga after you apparently hate me for liking it ._.

But I will give you credit where it's deserved. You did a nice job Chairman Kaga. Very thorough, and I agreed with pretty much everything you said.

Thanks for standing up against the majority.

  • Relating to one culture's fascination with another, I believe an interest in the unknown is natural. And, when one feels as though they cannot be a part of the culture that surrounds them, they may revert to an attempt at somehow "belonging" to another culture. Of course, this is a generalization and in no manner can be applied to everyone. Further, when certain cultures have rather extreme differences, the cultures may take an interest in one another because there is much to learn about the other. Whatever the case, I am thankful for and proud of my heritage.

    -----------

I am an anime fan and, by descent, Asian. However, I am in no manner an otaku. As to the Japanese language, I know pieces of it and enjoy using what I know. However, I also know pieces of and use Spanish and German. Learning about other cultures and other languages has, in the pursuit itself, an appeal to me.

I have a number of usernames online, Kogenta being one of them (obviously). Not all of my usernames are Japanese, though. And, Kogenta was merely the name of a character I liked. :: shrug ::

What is it with all the non-Asian people trying to be Japanese? You see them all over Anime conventions... Last year when I went to Comic-Con in San Diego (going again this year, and I know I'll see them), you see a bunch of normal, regular girls with cat ears on. You can always expect to see one of these catgirls anywhere you go where there's anime or Fruits Basket. I mean, more power to them if they're trying to be original, but it's getting so used by people trying to adopt cultures with false information about them. They're all over the place. I respect the Asian culture, I study it myself, but... these people who have no idea what the culture is about are flipping out over these cat ears, even though they have no idea what they are. And this kind of person can be seen online. No offense to the people on this forum who do so, but what is with the Japanese names? Like... Kurosaki, Kazuhito, etc.? I thought about one myself a year ago, then I had to go wash my mouth out with soap. This is not intended to offend anyone, and I am sorry for the people I may and probably will offend. But please, can someone tell me why people are running away from their own cultures?

And to the other side of the story... Asian people trying to be white? Why can't anyone embrace their culture anymore? It just sickens me... there's this Korean kid at my school who died his hair blond, and I asked him why he did that, and why he wasn't proud of his descent. He said that he was not proud to be Korean, and that it was important to be really cool rather than respecting where you came from. You tell me... does what I (and you probably) see make any sense?
    EDIT: Just found it... xD

I am so glad I'm not the only one that feels like that. I hate all these non-Japanese people putting -kun, -chan etc on their usernames or having Japanese sounding usernames. When I first came here the majority of usernames were standard, normal usernames like you find on any other board. Now everybody is going Japanese crazy, and most usernames just sound way too similar now.

That would probably be because you're only used to a certain set of names. Really, all Japanese names sound different, all names in general sound different, it just depends how long you've been around things like that.

  • I don't see what's so wrong about having similar Japanese names. PC's a forum. I repeat, a forum~ It doesn't necessarily affect the culture directly, per se...but if it bothers you that much, then ignore it. o_O; The whole hype will eventually fade, anyway.
