"Are these handcuffs necessary?" Archer asked as they walked. He didn't like the sound of the clanging metal, and the feeling was unpleasant. "By the way, where are we going? Why are faunus on the mainland?"
"You don't need an answer to either question." Mira replied strictly. The group had finally reached the area of the ruins where the faunus had set up camp, with tents and boxes of equipment scattered around what would have formerly been Asani Town's city centre.
"Sahn, Jairo, put up the tent. Get it a little further from the rest - we're keeping Ines there." Mira commanded, pointing towards a connected street some distance away from the other tents.
Sahn nodded, pulling out a large cylinder from her backpack and helping her brother down. As the spider siblings went to pitch the prefabricated tent, Nel and Mira took Archer inside the ruins of a shop. From the smashed screens and wires, it looked like a former electronics store.
Archer looked around and sighed, "So about that food, can I eat or what?" He asked hungrily, "Oh, and Nel, I actually have this sore spot on my back from when I fell, would it be too much of me to ask you to help me out?"
Before the hawk faunus could do anything Mira quickly stepped in and slapped her hand away, instead dropping Archer on a broken chair in the store. "Listen up," she began. "You may talk as smart as much as you want, but you're a prisoner now. If we want you to starve to death, you will. You think of doing anything funny, we shoot you. You try to contact anyone on the outside, we shoot you-"
"-and them too!" Nel added cheerily.
"-and you should be thankful I'm not letting the other faunus here know about you. Because you'd be god damn dead if I did." the owl faunus hissed.
"Sorry if I made you angry." Archer said sadly, lowering his gaze, and holding an innocent, apologetic look. "I'm not going to do anything funny, and well, I'm not talking smart, I'm just kind of happy to be talking at all, especially to people who aren't trying to kill me and are so beautiful."
Mira blushed, attempting to hide her expression by pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration. "Just-" she began, before realizing there was no point in her giving him a reply and turning back to Jairo and Sahn. "You guys done?"
"Yeah, almost. Start bringing in the boxes." Sahn called back.
The owl faunus nodded. "Nel, get him in there, make sure nobody notices. Get him a chair or something as well."
"Aye aye, my captain~" Nel chirped, nudging Archer to get up. "Let's go, hot stuff. Your girlfriend just broke up with ya."
"Aw, are you going to catch me on the rebound?" Archer said, getting up compliantly.
"If you wanna end up like the last guy I was with." the hawk teased, winking innocently. "As in, ended. He ended. Literally. Not exactly my fault, though."
"Well, I can assure you, I'm pretty resilient." Archer said with a joking prideful tone, "Almost every girl who's taken an interest in me tried to kill me at some point."
"Well, I haven't yet!" Nel giggled. Suddenly, the girl pulled out one of her half-chakrams, bringing the blade dangerously close to Archer's throat before stopping and letting the edge barely touch his skin. "Oops. I tried." she whispered, a devious smile on her face.
Archer laughed without a hint of fear, "Well then I guess it'd be rude for me not to take you out after all this. You, me, that blade thing, and maybe these cuffs too, they're actually getting quite comfortable." Archer sat down in the chair he was led to.
"Oh, I'm sure we can find other uses for them." Nel wrapped her arms around Archer behind him, weapon still in hand. She jabbed it lightly into his neck. "It could be your neck," her eyes slowly drifted downwards, "or maybe your-"
"Nel, we got company." Sahn called from outside the tent. "Think you might know them."

Gareth walked up to the isolated tent being guarded by a faunus team. Curiosity drove him to discover why they had isolated themselves and he had a feeling the answer would be more exciting that the activities at the main camp. Nara followed him like a loyal pet, unsure what he was doing but keeping in line regardless. Walking up to JSMN, Gareth said, "Good morning, I cannot help but ask why are you isolating yourself from the rest of us?"
"Oh hey, Nara, Gareth!" Nel waved at the duo excitedly and ran over to them as she exited the tent. "Oh, it's nothing really." She said. Leaning towards the two faunus, she motioned towards Jairo. "Trust me, you wouldn't want to know, we're doing you guys a service. It's just that J over there gets really bad gas when he's stressed, and-" Her sentence was cut off as an angry 'MOTHERFU-" sounded behind her, followed by a large bullet magazine striking her on the side of the head.
"Ow! What was for?" The hawk faunus yelled at her teammate, rubbing her head.
As the hawk and spider faunus exchanged unintelligible insults and curses, Mira had approached the two LGNT members. While she didn't personally know them, they seemed to at least be acquainted with Nel. "Hey. What she was trying to say is, it's nothing you guys should worry about." she reassured Gareth with a smile.
"I am not worried, but I am curious. You are trying to hide something here. Why else would you isolate yourself from the rest of the faunus in a war zone?" replied Gareth his calm zone making Nara wonder if he already knew what JSMN was up to. She then turned her attention back to the arguing Faunus.
"We-" Mira began, but sighed defeatedly. The last thing she wanted now was to argue and attract more attention, and she'd seen how it went the last time someone from LGNT had busted them out. Looking around, she motioned for them to come to the tent's entrance. "Sure. But we're trusting you guys on this." she said.
Once she deemed they were out of earshot, she turned back to the duo. "We've got a human with us - Archer Ines. We don't know why he's here, and he isn't telling us. We're keeping him away from the rest for now, in case anyone does anything, you know, rash. You can talk to him if you want to, but you should make it quick."
"Archer, that is a familiar name. One half of the human problem for this fractured team. I do not plan to expose your secret, or do anything to your prisoner unless you want me to," replied Gareth as he walked toward the entrance to the tent. Nara scowled upon hearing the word Archer and her ears pinned back to reflect her anger and hatred for the human.

Fanatic due to the closing in humans, Nilya had decided to enter the faunus camp to search for Nara after consolidating her power inside her body instead of the eight faux tails. As she weaved through the faunus camp, she desperately looked for her sister before it was too late. How could she protect Nara if she could not find her?
---
Gareth was first to enter the tent with Archer followed by a scowling Nara. "I am beginning to wonder if you enjoy being a prisoner," commented the raven faunus while Nara crossed her arms over her chest and refused to speak or even look at Archer.
Archer looked up and tilted his head, "You know me?" He asked, thinking for a moment, "Oh, you're that guy who totally wrecked my bones… to be honest, when you kidnapped me that was the least pleasant." Archer stretched casually and showed his bound wrists, "Did you come here to apologise or do it again?" He asked jokingly, with a kind smile.
"Neither, I saw you and hoped to find a good way to pass the time," replied Gareth in his normal monotone voice.
"Oh, well, feel free to take a seat, I'm not going anywhere." Archer said, kneeling comfortably, "Uh, your teammate, is she going to stay? I wouldn't want to make her uncomfortable."
"I'm fine," snapped Nara.
Gareth glanced over at Nara then asked Archer, "How did you get caught this time?"
"Uh, I was actually caught three times." Archer replied, "I guess Beacon is trying to catch me, and then some other group my dad hired took me from them, and after he tried to kill me, they saved me and dropped me off nearby where that faunus team saved me from dying in a tree." Archer explained this all very casually, as if it were a day at the store.
"I am not sure if I should call you lucky for living through all that, or unlucky due to going through all that," replied Gareth.
"Humans," muttered Nara under her breath.
"Well, I kinda just woke up to it…" Archer said bashfully, "I don't remember anything from the last three months, and I don't think it's bad luck, I really do deserve all that's happened, and probably a lot more."
"You deserve worse! Why did you do all those terrible things?" asked Nara her tone harsh as her anger boiled over.
Archer looked at Nara and bowed his head, "I'm sorry." He said before continuing, "At first I wanted to make an impact, and be someone bad enough that everyone would want to come together and stop me… but nobody can get that big, and I just ended up getting taken advantage of. And I understand I deserve worse, it's why I'm not trying to escape."
"So you are just giving up?" asked Gareth.
The tent's 'door' opened and a masked faunus slowly stepped inside. The fox features and style of clothing made Nara turn her head away in anger as her sister entered the tent. Nilya looked over at Nara then at Archer but did not speak as she waited for Archer's answer to the question.
"Well it's not giving up, I'm just not doing the bad stuff anymore." He said, suddenly more ashamed with Nilya around, "I mean, if I go home, Dad will try to kill me again, and I don't have my semblance so I don't think I'll survive long on my own, so I figure it's right for someone to get justice for my misdeeds." He looked down at the ground, not comfortable making eye contact with Nilya.
"If you believe you are going to die then why not make what life you have left matter?" asked Nilya calmly.
"He cannot. He will just hurt more people," replied an angry Nara.
"I'm not going to hurt anyone." Archer said, "Like I said, I don't have my semblance anymore… as for making my life matter, I'm here passing time for that guy who tried to ruin my bones."
Gareth, "You're wasting your life then. I could suggest a better use of it." Nilya walked up to her sister carefully and whispered something to her. Nara lashed back with an angry whisper and the two started a hushed conversation while Gareth looked over Archer, sizing him up.
"I don't know, I kind of like the company." Archer said, "Most people at this point aren't a big fan of me, so it's nice to have some conversation." Archer looked at the sisters and shuffled on his legs a bit, "Hey, Nilya, um, I'm sorry for not listening to you. And Nara, I'm especially sorry for how I hurt you." His eyes looked at the ground, "I got carried away."
The sisters stopped their discussion and looked at Archer. "I am tired of words, fake apologizes and tones of sympathy hiding nothing but a selfish desire," replied Nara.
"Then perhaps he can show it through action," suggested Nilya.
"There is nothing he can…" replied Nara angry before Nilya interrupted her.
"A war is coming, and while he may be human he could still help others survive," replied Nilya while her sister glared at her.
"I didn't apologise to make myself feel better." Archer said with a frown, "I don't do things to make myself feel good." He took a breath, "If you need my help, I'm willing to do what I can, but is that really enough to make up for what I did?" He asked Nara seriously.
"No," shot back Nara. "There is nothing any of you can do," she spit out before suddenly leaving the tent.
Gareth started toward the door while saying, "Her heart is heavy and filled with rage from Lauren's betrayal. I will talk to her to see if I can make her listen."
Nilya stopped him and gave him a warning, "If you try to twist her against me like Lauren claims you did to her. I will end you."
"Nilya, Lauren did that on her own along with her new friend. I tried to help but the selfish leech she claims as her mate ruined everything. I isolated Nara as I could see the danger that woman was to her survival. Best be few in number than be around that unstable monster," replied Gareth calmly. He then added, "I want to see you two united in your sisterly bond once more." He then departed.
Nilya looked over at Archer and asked, "The question for you is: even if you cannot atone for your past sins with future actions. Will you try to help others with what life you have left, or will you simply accept this fate?" Her voice was a little shaky as her mind spun around Gareth's words.
"I'll help if I'm needed to… but Nilya, I'm sorry if it's selfish, but I'm tired of trying to fight for people. When I had power, I couldn't control it, and now that I don't have anything, I've never really felt lighter." He sighed, "I can worry about the twins, you guys, and Lauren, and not be afraid of breaking my own bones for once in the last few years. I'm kind of happy too, even here like this, I feel relieved. I was told Nina and Ilexa are fine, and I bet you helped them right?"
"Lauren's mother, Blair, and in a strange way Gareth really," replied Nilya honestly. "The only thing I would ask for or suggest is to protect others. No elaborate plans… just try to protect those who matter to you during this storm," added the faunus as she looked toward the exit of the tent for a second.
Archer nodded, "No more plans." He said, looking at the tent door, "I'm extremely grateful… the twins are the closest people I had, and I'm terrified that they hate me." He sighed, "If you need to talk to your sister, I completely understand."
"No, I am just worried about her, but I can hear her voice so she is close. The twins do not hate you. The last time I talked to Nina she wanted to rescue you," replied Nilya. 'The humans have stopped moving… what are they waiting for?' thought Nilya after looking up at the feed again. Without thinking about it eight long tails began to form behind the faunus as she subconsciously drew strength from the darkness in the tent.
"So I wake up just before the war." Archer sighed, feeling complete relief from knowing that the twins didn't hate him, "Nilya… if you're humans, and looking for faunus planning to ambush you, what would you do?"
Nilya looked at Archer for a moment before asking, "Why do you ask this?"
"Well, I've been out a while, but I do know faunus aren't on equal footing with humans, so this camp has to be an ambush. The humans probably don't know exactly where we are, so they could be waiting and using themselves as bait." Archer said, his gears turning, "That… or they're waiting for another group of humans."
"I do not know what the humans have planned," lied Nilya. She then continued, "I am here for my sister. No matter what she says about me or calls me and my husband. I love her and I must save her."
"Well, if this becomes a battlefield, you're going to have trouble doing that alone." Archer said. "I'll keep an extra eye out… If I see her in trouble and you're not around, I'll help."
"Thank you, and I will do my best. If anything I will die trying to save her," replied Nilya in a solemn tone. She hoped it never came to that.
Archer laughed, "Don't worry about that. Varik will die way before he lets you kick the bucket, and I promised to protect who I could, so they'd have to kill a lot of people before they kill you or Nara."
"Varik does not that I am here or how much danger I am in. I made him believe I would be in FaunArc, not the front lines," replied Nilya not sure what Archer meant by the second statement.
"Oh, in that case, I'll watch your back. If you die and Varik finds out I was around, he'd probably sever my spinal nerves from the rest of my body."
Nilya sighed from behind her mask before adding, "If you were the one to kill me perhaps, but that would be the least of my worries when it comes to what Varik would do if I died… I am sorry that came out wrong. It is not that I would disregard your death, it is that I fear Varik would do much worse."
Archer smiled and shook his head, "No need to apologise, I would expect nothing less of leveling this town from him." Archer said it as a joke, but he wasn't sure how close to the truth he was. "I'm hoping you can get yourselves out of here and not worry about any of that though."
"Not sure if he would do that, just fear he would lose his humanity…" muttered Nilya before snapping out of her thoughts. "I am skilled at hiding and fooling others with illusions Archer. You forget I was accepted into Beacon as a human. It helps that humans tend to rely more on their eyes than any other sense, but I also know I have limits. I will take help where needed."
"Well, the team that has me is intending to use me as a sort of hostage. As ineffective as I think that will be, I don't think I'll have trouble causing a little chaos to lighten things for you." Archer giggled a bit, "And don't worry, I won't do anything fiery or explosive."
"You always like to be dramatic do you not?" asked Nilya.
"Well it's an easy way to get people's attention. If you're skilled at hiding, I'm as skilled for standing out."
"Sometimes it is best not to attract attention," replied Nilya.
"True, though sometimes hiding isn't enough." Archer replied with a stretch, "Say, maybe you could actually find me something to eat? I haven't exactly been given a welcome feast."
Nilya reached in a small pouch and pulled out a small foil wrapped bar with no label on it. She looked at it for a second then reached out to hand it to Archer while saying, "It tastes like cardboard with a hint of chocolate, but it is rather filling for its size. There will be no feasts for anyone for the time being."
Nilya frowned as she added in a solemn tone, "I was born with the gift of darkness for a reason. It is my fate and burden. Before I only used it to hide from those seeking to harm me, but now I have learned its more sinister side. I can fight now and I am prepared to unleash the darkness within when the time comes."
Archers face beamed as he grabbed the bar in his cuffed hands. "At least you're in control of it." He said, unwrapping the bar and eating it happily regardless of taste. "My semblance was a pretty cruel joke."
"No Archer, you lacked the self control required to master yourself and your power. Your guilt controlled you and crushed you mentally as your semblance crushed you physically. If anything your semblance was trying to help you, but instead you ignored it by using drugs. Had you slowed down and found the path to inner balance your abilities would have been controllable, and you would have been able to make better decisions."
"We all face the same struggle in different ways as our powers grow. If my powers consume me I will turn into a terrible monster or a cowardly shadow. I will become unable to exist in the light. In darkness would become either an unstoppable nightmare capable of cursing or erasing all in my path or would disappear in the darkest corners of the world in fear," replied Nilya calmly.
"You're right, it was me and my personal lack of control." Archer said, enjoying the satisfaction of not having his stomach try to digest itself, "Still, I don't think all that power is worth it for me, that fear of myself was too much, and I'm relieved to be rid of them." Archer looked at Nilya and offered her a piece of the food, "If for some reason, you or Varik end up losing control though, I'll personally find a way to bring you back. What I did over the last year… well I wish I had stopped myself, and I kind of wish someone had stopped me."
"People tried to help you, Archer, but you refused to listen and pushed them away. Instead you decided to listen in those who wanted to harm you," replied Nilya as she refused the offer for some of the food with a hand gesture. "I recommend you take this extra time you have to reflect on your folly. Learn the lessons it has to teach you about yourself and others, and then move forward wiser than you were before without letting your past destroy your future," added the faunus.
