improve my hg team?

Hi, ive been playing pokemon heartgold and have gotten to the first elite 4 (only 8 badges). I played pokemon gold before on my old gbc but its been sooooo long. Can anyone help me with my team atm?


Typholsion lvl 47 (impish)
Headbutt, swift, flamethrower, rollout.


Lanturn lvl 40 (sassy)
Whirlpool, waterfall, surf, discharge.


Heracross lvl 42 (bashful)
Brick break, aerial ace, strength, close combat.


Piloswine lvl 35 (adamant)
Take down, avalanche, rock smash, mud bomb.


Gloom lvl 38 (naive)
Mega drain, poison powder, cut, acid.


Xatu lvl 40 (rash)
Confuse ray, shadow ball, wish, fly.


Can anyone give me any ideas on how to improve my team so i can beat the elite 4, or where i can train? Also, id like to keep the team to pokemon introduced in gen2 (gloom will be evolved into a bellossom when i get a sun stone), so if you suggest a replacement please keep it to gen 2 pokemon please.

The first thing to is to get all your Pokemon that are under level 40 to level 40.

If you have a Heart Scale, Fly on over to Blackthorn City and teach Piloswine Ancient Power (in place of Take Down). When it knows this and gets a level up, it'll evolve into Mamoswine (and Mamo's pretty good). It also learns Earthquake at level 40, which is a lot better than Mud Bomb.

Xatu needs a Psychic attack. I'd put one over Confuse Ray; I've found confusion to be kinda unreliable. You're also not gonna be doing much to Bruno's Fighting types with Fly because Xatu has kinda low Attack.

Unfortunately, G/S/C/HG/SS sucks so hard for grinding until you have 16 badges, so you're kinda just stuck with battling wild pokes in Victory Road and praying for a rematch from one of your phone contacts. At least you only have to grind 2 pokemon.

Thanks, but can you suggest a psychic move to teach to xatu? as i dont tihnk it gets psychich until lvl 50-something, and dont know where to get the TM.

also, mamoswine wasnt introduced in gen2, so cant use him, but where do i get a heart scale from?

I forgot how limited Xatu's movepool is....the only other Psychic attack it learns is Future Sight at 42, and the TM for Psychic isn't available until you get to Kanto =(

Heart Scales can be found occasionally when smashing rocks or if you have a Pokemon with Pickup in the party. You can also apparently buy them at the Pokeathalon Dome on Wednesdays and Sundays.

On Typhlosion, replace Swift with Shadow Claw (Route 42), as it could probably help you with Will's Psychic Pokemon, and you already have a Normal-type move. Rollout should be swapped with Earthquake (Victory Road).

It seems kinda redundant to have 3 Water-type moves on Lanturn. Replace one of those with Ice Beam (Game Corner) or Blizzard (Department Store). I don't think you will need Whirlpool to complete the game if you are playing HG, so I say delete that one. I know it's an HM and a lot of people like to have them all, but you will like having an Ice-type move when you get to Lance.

Heracross doesn't need two Fighting-type moves. Get rid of Brick Break for Shadow Claw, Earthquake, Swords Dance (Game Corner), or Night Slash (remember), whichever one you think fits best. And Piloswine needs Earthquake! I know this is ingame, so I won't pick on Rock Smash or Gloom's Cut, but eh. Go to Route 43 and talk to the Rocket Guard and get TM Sludge Bomb for Gloom.
