Is prison a good form of punishment?

Send them off to an island so they can have fun murdering each other!!! lololl

Honestly, it depends on what they've done and how much evidence is against them. Part of me wants the ones with greater sentences (murderers/ rapists) to just go to some psychiatric ward where any SANE prisoner needs to take care of the INSANE/ sociopathic or face whatever consequences the insane will do to them.

Have them fend for themselves. Or have them do something productive. Send the ones with lesser sentences to Africa to build schools and crap. You're saying that's labour? Well then they should deal with it. The rest of the world labours for our jobs to make money. They should labour to learn that there are people out there that have so much less than them so that next time they don't squander money or try to rob a damn bank.

In other news I read a really good "fanfic" that centers around this. It's called "The Rapist" (the main character is a Therapist) so the title is a play on words. I can give you a link if you'd like but just a fair warning that the rating is quite high because it deals with adult content (but don't worry none of that fanfic-porno stuff) just VM me for it.

Honestly, when it comes to people purposely robbing banks JUST so they can get free medical care in prison, that's a sign that they're treating criminals too well and it's not solving anything.

EDIT: Maybe that sounded too harsh, lol. I agree with one person who posted here, and that prison should be kept to isolate dangerous people from society, but it should also be used to actually teach said people a lesson. When prisoners get treated better than residents of nursing homes (people in prison get to eat more and shower more than those living in nursing homes) then that's a sign that there's something wrong with this society.

I believe that people who decide to wreak havok need to be isolated and be firmly dealt with, to sum it all up. None of this "go easy on them" crap.

Prison is a hit an miss, Are prisons are soft, Pelican bay? Ha! Isn't **** compared to black dolphin. Its not the prison that is the answer its the person, You can throw a person in prison till they die, but if they don't want to change no amount of time or punishment will make them.

My uncle is serving 25 to life, First time ever to prison but instead of wasting away he got college degrees and is certified in welding, carpentry and mechanics. Its the person not the prison.

Society isn't helping either if a felon can't get a job how the **** is he going to live? he has to revert back to primal instincts and so he will commit crimes.

What about placing cameras on the island to record what's happening? You can have reality TV like in the film 'The Condemned'. There's potential for revenue to be made from such reality TV shows, instead of the taxpayer having to pay for a serial killer's lengthy stay in prison.
 
I think we should be less concerned about punishment and more concerned about deterrence. I don't think many prisoners, given the choice, would want to stay in prison, so we can agree that it's definitely a form of punishment for most. That's not important though. What is more important than punishing the criminal is a) protecting society by placing the criminal in prison b) rehabilitating the criminal so they don't commit more crimes and (personally I think this next one is the most important goal long-term) c) deterring other people from committing crimes.

The United States of America has less than 5 per cent of the world's population, yet a quarter of the world's prisoners. If prison was a good deterrent to crime then it should be the safest country in the world right now. We should be less focused on punishing the criminal and more focused on preventing future crime (in general and for repeat offenders).
 
I think it depends on the person. I figure most people dont want to be confined to prison for yearsm never being able to be free and having a record after, which will make it very hard to get a job. I say for some people, that would teach them a lesson. However it may not be that way for everyone, some people might not care and continue to commit crimes afterwards. That being said, many people that get sent to prison are dangerous criminals that shouldnt be out in society because they are a danger to others. I think honestly its more about protecting others than rehabilitating or punishing people. More should be done to try to deter crime, though some people just dont care that what they have done is wrong, so prison isnt a punishment for those people.
