Is R4 unfair?

Do you think it is kinda unfair that some people (including me) can just use an R4 while the
others have to worry about money and the games not being worth their money?

For those who don't know, R4 is a little tool commonly used in Asia (according to my friend, every DS owner in Hong Kong has one). It allows you to download ROMS on a normal MicroSD memory card, insert it into your DS and play them normally, with Wi-Fi and all. It also allows some cheats to be used in some games (not in my Platinum, at least).

    Woohhaaa!!! First Post! XD

I have one too, but I live in The Netherlands, and everyone here has one of it too. It's just very handy, but first I wondered too if it was unfair.... Because, basically, you're just stealing, but then invisble. But from who are you stealing? From Nintendo. And Nintendo is rich enough, I guess. But still, that's no reason to steal from someone at all! So...I think it's unfair. But I do use it though, because it spares me so much money! I mean, an R4-card is €20,- and all the games are around €40,-! So, it's just whose money you'd like to steal from: your own, or Nintedo's. I guess I'd rather steal from Nintedo than from myself. Or is that a wrong comparison?

Yea, I guess so. However, I don't think its any more of a stealing than using an emulator. As the roms are available on many sites, I think it is either the rom uploaders stealing or it being a victimless crime, like stealing a lollipop. XD

Everyone at my school who owns DS imported one other than me and called me stupid for not getting one. I happen to read articles and know a lot more stuff about the R4 then they do. They didn't even know it was illegal since they said the games were on the internet(which should only make you suspect them to be illegal even more and how do you think they get on the internet. Are any of the roms uploaded by big companies?).

I think it's just plain unfair to the creators if you use an R4, unless the game is no longer being made then I guess it's slightly better. Since the creator isn't earning money off it anymore. I wouldn't buy a game if I don't think it's worth my money but it doesn't mean I'm gonna get it on R4 or play it on an emulator(except Emerald, $140 for the game was ridiculous here).

Yeah... well, at least I weren't the one to get it. My mom's friend brought it from Thailand, and it was a surprise for me along my DS. So, now that I have it anyway, it would be stupid not to use it. Right?

I have 2 that I got for 6 dollars on Deal Extreme. I loved my first one so much I had to get another!

3 dollars each? Well that's cheap. I don't really see the point in getting two, as one R4 can easily keep almost 20 games, which is more than most people will ever have. However, as I said, that is cheap.

It's sort of unfair because most good games these days have a copyright lock or something like that so it's just a waste of a download on the R4. So we may have to buy them anyway unless people can make a way to bypass the copyright.

No, 6 dollars each. I can't find them on Deal Extreme right now, but it's not a traditional R4, because they are not made anymore and are no longer updated, and don't support SDHC cards. This R4, known as the R4i-SDHC. And was recently updated to automatically update through wifi, and you can download games through wifi on the DS.

Now just because I have this, doesn't mean I don't buy DS games. I usually pirate games to see what the fuss is about, if I like it I buy it. Like Soul Silver, and this new game Sands of Destruction. I will be buying both as soon as funds are available.

Why does everybody use R4? AceKard is MUCH better. AceKard can even play HG/SS without freezing.

To be honest, I don't illegally put DS games on my AceKard. I know it's stupid to own a DS Flashcart and not put DS games, but it just seems wrong. The only games I have on it are GB, GBA, and SNES games. I consider it "okay" to download old games (such as GB and GBA) since they don't sell them anymore. The only reason why I know about HG/SS not freezing is because I've read reviews.

Seriously? There always one mistake from going under. If the Wii sold how the GameCube did, just imagine...

But it didn't, and they're not under at all. Riding on epic innovation and huge franchises, I'd say Nintendo is still far from dying.

I have one but i only use it for hacks and some games if im not sure about i download them and if i like them i would buy them.
    If not ill delete them.

It's like downloading music off the internet. No one cares, and most get away with it without a guity conscience haunting them for the rest of their lives.

Of course it's unfair, anyone who uses it is stealing, so lets say I download 8 games for an r4, I'm stealing $400.

I have one, but I only use it to play Japanese versions of games I know i'll buy legit when they are released here or to use as a "Demo" of a game im interested in but not 100% sure of buying yet and if anything owning an R4 has made me spend more money on DS games as I have been able to try games I would have otherwise passed on, so from my perspective no it's not unfair, I see it as a way of knowing if a new release is worth my time and money and if it is I buy it, either way I delete it from my R4 usually the same day I download it (Also none of them are ever Nintendo games because they are almost always fantastic).

Yes, luckily. But when the next generation is released it could go back the other way for all we know.

If one mistake is going to put the under that badly, I daresay downloading ROMs is the least of their worries.
