Every pokemon game it is the same story there is you, your rival, the professor, an evil team, and elite four with a champion who is always one of your friends. Although as far as storyline is concerned Silver, Gold and Crystal where lways quite unique. What do you think?

As far as I see it, the actual story[original reason for traveling] was different for each generation.
RBGY- The generic collect badges, then Elite Four plus 'Gotta Catch 'Em All' was a part too.
GSC- Your reason for travelling started out as an errand for Prof. Elm which grew into a 'mission' to find your rival and bring back the stolen Pokemon.
RSE- I think that was kind of generic too, following your father's footsteps and surpassing him while getting involved in a high-stakes battle with Team Aqua and/or Magma.
DPPt- The story to DP and Pt start out differently...you use Pokemon you find in a suitcase to protect yourself at the lake. in Pt you were given Pokemon so you'll be able to protect yourself. In the end the whole point of your travels was mainly to see every Pokemon in the region, not to collect badges, and also you get involved in a conflict that decides the fate of the universe...

So I dont really think that GSC had a unique storyline because there was no mention of getting the stolen Pokemon after the beggining...

I've never thought of it that, I always thought they where repeatative, but your absolutely correct!

I agree in a way but if you look deeper it has the same basic structure so you sort of know what to expect anlthough as i said i do think these ones where more unique than the others i think for the new games they should alter it.

:\ hmmmmm but if It was altered there would be ALOT of complaints

I don't think they have changed it drastically for a the fact that people must love the storyline.
Or people wouldn't continue to purchase the game every time.
I would definitely love too see a new type of game for example, I'd love to see a Pokemon Co-ordinator game :)

Since this is not specific to HG/SS (after all, it is a remake so you'd expect the same more or less, and this applies to all of the main handheld games), moving this to General Pokemon Gaming.

They've been using the rough same formula over and over again, simply because it has worked so well every new generation - even now millions of sales go very quickly, even with Platinum. They're always the new fans and gamers who come along, and it manages to hold a number of the ones who have played at least one Pokemon game as well - so seeing this trend continuing now, I wouldn't necessarily expect anything drastically new to at least the core games like these - after all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Of course, this doesn't apply to the spin-off games out there, like the plot the GCN games in Colosseum or XD had, or the gameplay the MD or Ranger series offered. More may yet come.

There's a reason why the Mystery Dungeon series is better than the main games.

    THEY HAVE PLOT.

It's not "Watch a 10 year old own highly trained people, beat up a giant mythological creature that the evil team pulls out of their ass, and become the champion!"

People seem to be confusing Gameplay Structure with Storyline.

Pokemon games are notorious for lacking in plot, and what plot there is is usually centered around the deeds of the resident villainous group:
genI: Team Rocket is stealing fossils, killing Marowaks, and controlling major corporations for some reason or another...
genII: Team Rocket 2.0 is stealing Slowpoke tails, making magikarp evolve, and controlling the local radio station in hopes of bringing back their fallen leader
genIII: Team Aqua and Team Magma don't get along, so they try to resurrect a pair of legendary pokemon that don't get along to make a point on environmentalism.
genIV: Cyrus is insane and wants to destroy the universe in favor of a new one.

Sure, the collect eight badges/defeat Elite four plays into the storyline, but really, it's just part of the basic gameplay formula that has been around since the beginning of the series to create an actual goal for the player to accomplish, even if the rest of the story is substantially different in each gen.

No I don't think gold and silver had a good plot. But silver's parts of the story are cool.

As a writer, let me tell you something: there is no such thing is a unique story.

Yes, you heard me right. Nothing can ever be original. Human beings, no matter where on earth we reside, have common beliefs about the world and ways to bring those beliefs into symbols. They're called archetypes. Jung wrote whole books on the subject.

Stories cannot be entirely original because the people writing them are human, so will always fall into some level of familiarity. What's important is the way you tell the story, not the story itself. Over thousands of years there have been millions of heroes, lovers, villains, and battles of spiritual dominance... What sets them apart and lets everyone love each one and not call out unoriginality is because the journey, what happened in-between, makes them special. That's all a writer can really hope for.

If you take a look at the Pokemon games, you'll note that the plot does tend to be very similar... But if you actually know what 'plot' means, you'll know that plot is only the basic skeleton. Story is what sets it apart. It should be obvious to everyone that the story has only evolved throughout the generations and is anything but a copy of what came before.

    I like your summary Timbjerr ^^ a lot ^^

Well I think This series is never going to change much . For people that want a different Storyline they made Myster Dungeon and Pokémon Ranger.
