Is your musical taste "off the beaten path"?

Basically, the title means "Do you listen to music that most of your peers don't listen to?" This applies to me.

My preferred genre of music is Latin Pop, preferably in Spanish. I took 5 Spanish classes in high school, so I speak Spanish rather well. My favorite singer is Luis Fonsi, who just released a new album this past June 28, called "Tierra Firme." My favorite band is Reik, who also just released a new album, "Peligro," today. Other artists/bands I like include Chayanne, Alex Ubago, Black:Guayaba, and Camila. Some of these singers (including my two claimed favorites) have done cross-overs to English, which Reik just did with their new album today. My taste may be uncommon around me, but in Latin America and Spain, all of the aforementioned singers/bands are very popular.

Anyway, discuss here if you also have a musical taste that is "off the beaten path."

    AKA "Are you a hipster?"

Yeah, I listen to a lot of death metal... which is obviously not the most popular thing in the world.

A lot of my peers listen to the same sort of music I do...although this is only because I'm constantly sharing it with them. One of the most common questions I'll ask of my friends is what sort of music they listen to, and then I'll make a few recommendations to see what they think.

That said, my music tastes do cross over with a lot of people's: whilst a couple of my friends listen to some symphonic metal, they don't listen to it quite as much as I do, and they listen to the more "mainstream" bands of the genre. Nobody I knows listens to classical though, which is a real shame.

Let's see... My school had a rock craze and my best friend was a member of our schools band. Everyone loves pop, the black people liked pop and rock too.
I basically only listen to rap, and I'm a white male who has never experienced a ghetto or poverty etc.
And my friends say I'm too white for rap lol
I would say that I'm pretty far from what's popular :D

I notice some of you have mentioned rap, which a lot of my friends listen to. However, I, in almost all cases, don't consider rap to be real music because the vast majority of it is vulgar and "not poetic" like more or less all the music I like. This is another way I my musical tastes are vastly different from my peers.

    Beaten path?

Well no, I just listen to anything I enjoy; which branches into every genre (yes that INCLUDES country and hip-hop). I like to keep an open mind.

Well, besides my close friends, there are probably about 3 people my age who listen to grind and mathcore within several miles, and this is coming from somebody in a freaking massive school district (each graduating class is around 600 people) so...

While I do enjoy mostly every type of music, only one of my friends is into a handful of the same deathcore/metalcore music I mainly listen to.

Other than that, yes, my musical choices are unique in comparison to all my friends, seeing as I'm still in the everlasting metal era.

No, most of what I listen to has many fans around the world my age. There's tonnes of indie kids who listen to the hipster bands I like, there's a whole lot of people who listen to old blues music (the good blues, there are lots of bad blues artist), there's many post-rock and noise-rock fans. Pretty much everything I listen to has a decent fan base.

I do have a very diverse (albeit selective) music taste, but there are countless people around the world who listen to music based on its merits so it's not really that unique.

Yeh, but "off the beaten path" changes definitions relative to your crowd. My preference for mid-90s death metal and phlegmy black metal isn't anything unusual around my social scene. I do like punk from the Balkan area (especially Croatia & Slovenia) and traditional Indian music, which I guess could be considered odd.

My taste is off the beaten path, as I am a fan of classic rock and metal. Most people that I know around my age listen to heavily autotuned music and electronic, which I am not a fan of. I do also like video game music too, and people seem to think it is very strange to have it on your mp3-player for some reason. Video games have great music too you know!

In other words "Do you listen to chart music?"
My taste falls under the status of my mood. Pop music is just regurgitated and driven by money so I avoid listening to it. But other than that, it's silly to suggest there is a "beaten path", and it's a irrelevant question, since music isn't about how many people listen to it. I listen to classical, melodic metal, acoustic, but I mean, I don't tie myself to a genre, nor do I really care how many people listen to it. Makes no odds to me, I like what I like and I appreciate music that sounds good in my ears. There's no particular deeper meaning. I know music "means" something to people, but it means something to everyone, else it would be depreciated. So saying you listen to a genre for a profound reason is irrelevant, it's music and it's something that appeals to your senses. It'd be much like saying that you eat potatoes for a profound reason or that potatoes are "off the beaten path", other than they taste nice.

    ^ This.

I had a bunch of friends in Arizona that listened to the same music as me, but now that I moved back to Jersey, I'm like the only one that listens to post-hardcore/metalcore/death metal/deathcore. That'll probably change once school starts.

Most of my friends listen to the music which is "in" now >: Like idk, I don't really like it, the only modern artists I prefer are Nicki Minaj, Rihanna (Love! <3) Gaga and a bit of Brit now and then.

Although my preferred is 80's/90's/Early 2000 music <: My friends are like "duh wat is tis?2!?!"

I also love showtunes, which gives me a nice a label of "gay" which I couldn't care less about, someone's music taste doesn't reflect their sexuality >: I also love listening to glee, which isn't a genre, but is "off the beaten path"
