Japanese Anime (That is NOT subtitled)

    Do you guys even bother or enjoy watching anime, that is in Japanese, that is NOT subtitled? I do, for 2 very simple reasons: I want to see episodes before they are released in America, and it's a great way to pick up some Japanese words.
     
    A lot of the anime I like to watch generally doesn't get subbed, but I can do a decent job of working my way through the episodes raw. Anime is a horrible way to try to pick up more than the very most basic words, Japanese grammar is so vastly different from English, so you won't learn much from watching it raw unless you actually understand the grammatical differences, even then, classes are better.

    I agree with you for the most part.

    See a lot of anime with pretty simple plots you can pick up by watching it ubsubbed. I mean Pokemon in Japanese is a kids show so you wouldn't need subtitles or something like Black Lagoon which has as much horrifyingly broken English as there is Japanese (I just watched it dubbed because the broken English made me almost break my computer XD).

    ...alternatively there are some animes like Shakugan no Shana, Genji, Rideback, Akikan, Birdy the Mighty Decode, BLEACH, which are more plot driven that you need the subs to really keep up. (Okay maybe no Akikan but you all get the point...>_>).

    It's more of a challenge. Just looking at expressions helps me o.O
     
    In all honesty, I prefer to watch anime dubbed in English. I think that having subtitles on anime detracts attention from the artwork, and a lot of anime artists feel that way too. In fact, I'd go so far to say that the English voice actors for Cowboy Bebop are better than the Japanese VAs.

    I doubt I'd watch anime in raw Japanese either, mostly because I haven't learned any Japanese outside of a few phrases that I've heard in anime. Besides, I watch anime for the stories, not to learn Japanese.

    Personally i would go the raw first, subs later method since watching subs tends to end up being just reading the subtitles rather than actually trying to learn something there, and watching the raws after that becomes, oh, this is what they said here, so it means this.

    dunno, i watch raws personally, really just makes life a bit easier and i don't have to be frustrated while i'm waiting for updates on a series that gets stalled/dropped and no one else is subbing it [Hidamari Sketch]

    The only word I've learned doing that is "baka!" XD
     
    Meh, I watch a raw from time to time. They're usually for educational purposes (vocabulary reinforcement), but when you think about it, it's not a very good idea for learning regular speech. The vocal inflection is often times highly unnatural.

    They're still entertaining nonetheless. I found that watching the raw to Mewtwo Strikes Back was a better experience than watching a subtitled version. In a few ways, I found the movie to be a little depressing, in which the emotion contained within the character development and the plot might have been taken away if it was with subtitles. I guess it's all in your opinion, but it might depend on what you're watching. For example, Jin-Roh would have been fine with or without subtitles, mostly because the dialogue is much more minimalistic than most movies.
     
    I find it easier to pick up words while watching with subs since I mostly know how Japanese grammar is so I find no problems at all when picking up words
     
    With fansubs, quite a few are known to be innacurate. And besides, in subtitles, sentences are often restructured to make better sense in English. Therefore, the Japanese sentence would be pretty different. Like the infamous "dreaming" and then "yume o miteiru" (seeing a dream) which is actually the Japanese term for dreaming.

    The only anime I watch unsubbed is Pokemon, because I like the art value and it's easier and quicker. And I find I learn more Japanese with raws because it's up to my ear to catch everything and with no help, I think more and perhaps learn more.
     
    I prefer dubbed anime, then subbed. But if I have to watch it in Japanese, I can pick up enough to follow along with the basics. Worst case I just watch it and don't bother translating. 8|

    I was watching Tales of the Abyss in its raw form for a long time before I ran out of time to keep up with it every week. I only understood everything in that because I've played the game so many times, though. Most of the time if I watch something raw I can only get a handful of what's actually said.
     
    Konnichiwa. I've watched it not subtitled before, only when I really want to see the episode - even though I'm clueless to learn Japanese nor pick anything up. My head is already filled with too much crap to just fill it with more - but I'd love to learn Japanese one day. :D

    Well, like I said, these raw episodes are perfect for learning ^^
     
    I have watched Japanese anime before never with subs though. I find it easy to pick up words without subs so it's not a problem.

    Yeah, same here. Like I said before, just look at their expressions.
