    I'm guessing since people show up in these threads they know something about the Japanese culture or language but for the people who don't I decided to make a simple dictionary/thesaurus they can refer to if they can't understand what someone wrote. (The rules didn't say I can't so...)

    This will go in alphabetical order and more words will be added at every chance.
    If any information seems incorrect please notify me. Also, please be aware some words maybe repeated because they show in more than one category or it may be a typo. There is also going to be a new category I'll put up later for baby boy and girl names and their meanings. The names wil be translations of English names and translation of Japanese names (a simple switch up)

    Regular Words and Phrases some words will be repeated because this is not just a dictionary but a thesaurus-they will also appear in other categories

    Baby names for Boys and Girlsin order- boys alphabetical then girls, first Japanese then English

    Before starting unless you know

    Name order:

    In Japan, like in China and Korea, the first name follows the family name. A person with the first name "Ichiro" and the family name "Suzuki" is, therefore, called "Suzuki Ichiro" rather than "Ichiro Suzuki".

    Family names:

    Most Japanese family names consist of two kanji (Chinese characters). The meanings of many of the kanji used in family names are related to nature, geographical features or locations, for example, mountain (yama), tree (ki), rice field (ta), island (shima), village (mura), bridge (hashi), between (naka), below (shita) etc. Some of the most common Japanese family names are Sato, Suzuki, Takahashi, Tanaka and Watanabe.

    First names:

    Japanese first names also commonly consist of two kanji. The meanings of those kanji are often positive characteristics such as intelligence, beauty, love or light, names for flowers, the four seasons and other natural phenomena, or the order of birth (first son, second son, etc.).

    Since quite a few kanji have identical pronunciations, first names that are pronounced the same, are not necessarily written with the same kanji. For example, there are about five common versions for the popular female first name Yoko, depending on the kanji for "Yo".

    Not seldomly, the gender of a person can be guessed by the ending of his/her first name. First names ending with -ro, -shi, -ya, or -o are typically male first names, while names ending in -ko, -mi, -e and -yo are typically female first names.

    The names of foreigners are usually written in katakana.

    Titles:

    The Japanese commonly address each other by last name. Only close friends and children are usually addressed by first name. In addition, people rarely address each other just by name, but usually attach an appropriate title to the name. There is a large number of such titles depending on the gender and social position of the person you are addressing. Some of the most frequently used titles are:

    * san: (for example Sato-san)
    This is the most neutral and famous title, and can be used in most situations. Only in formal situations, san may not be polite enough.

    * sama: (for example Sato-sama)
    This is a more polite form of san, commonly used in formal situations and letters, but too polite in a casual context.

    * kun: (for example Yusuke-kun)
    This is an informal title used for boys and men that are younger than yourself.

    * chan: (for example Megumi-chan)
    This is an informal title used for young children and very close friends or family members.

    * sensei: (for example Sato-sensei)
    This is a title used for teachers, doctors and other people with a higher education and from whom you receive a service or instructions.

    Cool :]
    I have a few suggestions though

    -In the Colors and Numbers sections, you might wanna add in there the Japanese word for Color and Number.
    -Hentai doesn't JUST mean perverted. It means weird as well.
    -And just one word cause I love it that much.

    Don - Ta-da

    Nice work though, that's gonna be pretty useful in the future for me :]

    Very nice list. Although some of the words have several meanings, which I'm sure you probably know, it seems well done. The first one that I noticed was "Shin", which could also be used as "heart"

    You could add to the numbers section:
    Hyaku: One-hundred
    Sen: One-thousand
    I think those are pretty common, could be useful.

    Also, I don't know if you did it on purpose, but you left out some pretty common phrases like "Tadaima" and "Ittekimasu"

    Then there's the colors. I don't think you need the "i" at the end of them unless you're saying something like "Aoi sora", which could also be said as "Ao no sora". The "i" is like the same meaning for "no". This doesn't apply only to colors though. Also, "Orenji" is spelled wrong on the list at the bottom.

    Sorry if that was a lot.

    Oh :o this seems like that one anime/manga guide blue an i did way backs when XD

    overall pretty good, a few mistakes here and there, and a few repeats, but overall pretty good
    oh, and i really don't get why katakana counterparts of some words are in there (Lion, Unicorn)

    also as a question: are you gonna be going into culture or are you gonna keep it strictly vocab?

    I'll get working on that as of 2 to 3 hours. I know these peoblems but the dictionary/thesaurus thread was done in a rush. Thank you all for giving your view and I'll make sure I get as much of the words of
    Japan as I can!

    Uhh, I guess these are nice when listening to animoo. Or to help children of the world misusing Japaneezy words. But I'm mostly here to point out something because IT TINGLES MY SKIN CELLS:

    Anime = Japanese animation, don't confuse with cartoons, which is American animation

    American animation ain't STRICTLY cartoons. Animation is moving, drawn pictures (to be brief)--You see this kind of stuff when you watch most Disney movies.

    I believe that cartoons is an element that is frequently showed up in animations. They show off exaggerated characters/situations to appear humorous. They may even wrap itself around in a plot (simple or complex) so the viewer may just only perceive it as a line of gags. Noticeably, old works barely had any sort of plot... It was just simply a bunch of gags thrown together!

    People would put together "animated cartoons" because they see moving pictures with exaggerated/simplified characters.
    Others may separate cartoon and animation. Animation meaning drawn, moving stuff and cartoon as crazily-drawn, moving stuff.

    Japanese animation mostly obvious in comedies, DO include cartoon elements. You'd see caricatures of stereotypes in both of American and Japanese, deformed bodies, and faces having their parts flying off. (Ex: eyes.)

    So, to make me happy, I demand you to just have it as "Japanese animation." Nobody would be confused to it as "American animation" because you have the word Japanese on front. Sorry to sound rude.

    Well, anyway. Keep up the good work. You made quite a hefty list and people are definitely gonna refer to this for different reasons.

    Thank you for posting this, it might become very handy in the future. =D

    I wonder if I could ask it here, but do you know what 'Toki Wo Koeta Omoi' means? It's the title of one of my favourite soundtrack songs, and I want to know what it means.. :o

    Going to try to keep it vocab and maybe start another thread for the culture if someelse doesn't.

    I don't no what the whole thing means but the first word means time, hour, or occasion and the seconf I think means of while the last word can mean heart, mind, feelings, or emotion. Koeta... I have not the slightest clue as I never heard it before.

    Thanks for wanting to help me. =) I can't find the 'Koeta' on any of the online dictionaries I've found...
    I friend of mine suggested it could maybe 'koe' and 'ta'... =o

    Anyways, this is how it's written:
    [PokeCommunity.com] Japanese simple dictionary/thesaurus

    It's very small I know, but I couldn't find a right size cover. D:

    The main reason you can't find "koeta" in a dictionary is because koeta is actually the (informal) past form of the verb "koeru", to exceed, surpass.
    So putting it all together, "Toki wo koeta omoi" goes to "Feelings that surpass time" or something like that whatever sounds good to you

    Thank you very much, Digi-kun. =) Now that I think of it, it matches the song very well. :3

    Of course, I was happy to do so. I think this list would actually be something very helpful, so why not? When I find the time, I'd love to contribute more to the list.

    Wow, it's the first time I've seen this! Anyway, I like this coz even though I know Japanese, some of the words listed here have never been seen by my eyes before... So, Arigatou for posting this!

    I found another thing when I was looking through the list.

    I think you switched "kiba" and "taiyou". Kiba should be fang, and taiyou should be sun. Also, you didn't put "kimi", which is believe is also used as "you" along with "anata".

    so anybody can translate english to japanese here???
    is it offtopic??
    arigato and sayonara
    Hmm... It's not that off-topic, but I think this can only translate basic Jap speaking... Anyway, it's just my opinion...

    Just fixed that- like I said before, this was done in a rush. Thnx 4 pointing out my mistake. Added the new words too. I forgot a whole lot of stuff. wow:15::nervous:

    :tired: I don't really see the need for an English to Japanese If I have a jap to english but I mayB able to make a new thread for that in my free time. For now, I'm just going to do this (words from jap to english, animal names, colors, numbers, elements, and soon to come... name translations jap to eng and eng to jap) That seems well enough for now but I'll keep your idea in mind. I live in NY but I don't have a 100% eng vocab yet so I won't make the thread yet. Maybe in a week or 2 because I'm also working on a hack but the point is It'll be here
