just what is mew?

honestly now,girafarig is a giraffee but its tail isn't the ordinary one for a giraffee so i agree with ''empolemew''.some pokemon have mixed characteristics and weird ones so they can attract people.if those characteristics weren't mixed we would have a typical giraffee and a typical kitten.(i don't like simple and typical things)
 
Mew is a Cat/mouse Hybrid I guess. looking at it they clearly wanted a super cute legendary the fans would fall in love with...and they succeeded. Mew is my fav Legendary.

Not that is matters, but I'd like to point out I have always thought and consider mew to be female...and thats not just cause of the pinkness either >_>

I agree with everything in this statement. Although, it seems weird how the Pokemon that can learn all TMs/HMs would be a super cute legendary. Then again,that's probably why they chose Mew. Wait, did that make sense?
 
Alot of Pokemon are based on animals and alot of Pokemon aren't, so we really have no judgement in stating what it's creator has based it on. I wouldn't have guessed pikachu to be a mouse Pokemon, even if it didn't have it in it's description. =3

Mew is the sound a cat makes, but we have established that much... it's mouse like features point to mouse... Serebii has the Pokedex info on Mew, it says that it is a new species Pokemon... that didn't help at all...

You know, out of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen, Colosseum, XD, Diamond AND Pearl, Emerald is the only game where you can catch a legit mew, you get it on the others via trade/pal park... just thought I should tell you, seemed interesting xD

Anyway, I think Mew is a cat, I don't know why, I just think Cat suits it better.
 
Based on the name "mew", I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be more feline shaped.
 
I'm guessing its name comes from μ?
Since it's supposedly an "average" of all existing Pokemon.

So hence, it's a distilled form of all existing Pokemon, and not a mouse or a cat.
 
It definitely has the physical features of a mouse, but its name points in the direction of a cat. Also, about nine years ago I had a book on pokémon that stated Mewtwo to be, if I recall correctly, a "ferocious feline". Since Mewtwo, the clone of Mew is a cat, it would suggest that Mew is, too. However, I don't know if I even still have it and I can't vouch for its veracity in terms of descriptions.

Look at Mew's original sprite from the Japanese Red and Green versions...

Then look at pictures of an embryo...

'Nuff said.
 
It would make sense to me if Mew was a cat. The body shape looks more catlike to me. Also if you look at how the name is spelled. Mew is spelled like meow. All pokemon say their own name when they talk. Mew saying "mew" sounds like a cat saying meow.
 
Mew? Ferocious? You're kidding me. Mewtwo is the one who has anger issues. Mew plays like a kitten. Mew is totally a cat.
 
The real question here is how did the Pokémon world name it Mew because it's catlike? Has anyone ever seen a cat in Pokémon? Do they know what a cat is?
Cause it's been 20 years and I've never seen a cat in the anime before.
