Chapter V: When Nature Attacks! Part 1
Compared to the expanse and action of Route 1, Route 2 was quite plain and straight... almost boring. As he and Goliath walked, Neiteio noticed that the red and orange maple tree lane was gradually becoming a rocky valley. Ignoring the detour to the well-advertised fishing pond, Neiteio was able to reach the end of the Route before noon. But as he approached, he didn't see any buildings marking the outskirts of the next town. On the contrary, he saw... more trees?
A dense cluster of odd-looking trees was blocking the path. They trembled as he approached, almost as if they were alive... Neiteio suddenly noticed that the things had feet! He pulled out his PokeDex and scanned the "trees", a quick test to determine if they were Pokemon or not.
"Sudowoodo, the Imitation Pokemon:
Sudowoodo pretends to be a plant, but it is afraid of water, and its composition is closer to a rock than to a plant. Sudowoodo have the habit of pretending to be a tree in order to blend in with their surroundings. During winter, when its green forearms do not blend in with the trees, Sudowoodo may migrate en masse to more southern areas."
"This must be their annual migration spot... Just my luck."
They were so tightly packed, and shaking so violently that Neiteio didn't even bother trying to squeeze past them. "Oy, Goliath," he called. Goliath snapped his pincers in anticipation, expecting a battle royale. Instead, Neiteio asked him to "talk to them, ask them if they could move out of the way."
Goliath was clearly disappointed, but slowly advanced. He reached the edge of the artificial forest, but before he could deliver his message he caught a swift Low Kick that sent him rolling backwards. Knowing that Goliath would try to fight a clearly ridiculous battle, Neiteio quickly recalled him to his PokeBall, and held it tightly in his hand as Goliath fought. The PokeDex said that Sudowoodo don't like water, and the fishing pond was conveniently close... He hated having to backtrack, but it appeared to be the only way he could get past the fake trees.
He started walking back, complaining to himself that the return trip seemed to take twice as long as the first one, but he finally returned to the tree-lined fork that led to the fishing pond. The "pond" actually turned out to be a huge picturesque lake with a large dock and larger cabin. A few people were out on the lake: rowboats, speedboats, sailboats, Surfing Pokemon. Everyone outside seemed occupied with their own business, so Neiteio headed into the cabin for information.
He was automatically greeted by a cheerful old man wearing a vest covered in lures. "Well hey there! Care to try your hand at some fishin'?"
Neiteio examined the cabin's decor. This guy was obviously a fishing fanatic: various rods and lures hung on the walls, alongside wall mounts of fish Pokemon. Among them, Neiteio noted a Mantine, Gorebyss, and Relicanth. Storing this information in his organic database, he responded to the inquiry.
"Actually, no. I can't get through Route 2, a bunch of Sudowoodo are in the way..."
The fisherman nodded. "Been gettin' a lot of traffic 'cause of them pests. I guess you'll be wantin' a water Pokemon to remove 'em, right?"
"Yeah, I figured that would be the best plan. I heard that they run from water."
"Well, this lake's chock full of water Pokemon for you to catch! A boat rental'll run you from
1000 to
10000, depending on how fancy you want to get."
It suddenly struck Neiteio that he would have no way to weaken and capture whatever he caught with the rod, and Pinsir can't swim. He relayed his thoughts to the fisherman, who nodded as if he had heard all this before.
"Aye, Pinsir... Yeah, you can't fight any lake Pokemon with one of those unless it jumps in your boat! Hey, if you still need a water Pokemon, I can rent one o' mine out to you. When you get to wherever you're goin', just have the Nurse at that Center transfer the PokeBall to the Maple City Center. Sound good?"
Neiteio considered the proposal. He didn't feel ready to handle taking care of two Pokemon yet, but he had no means to catch the water Pokemon he needed.
"Sure. How much?"
The fisherman smiled now that he had scored a business deal. "
5000 flat,
15,000 deposit."
Neiteio made no physical show of how much he was suffering parting from his money, but after riffling through his wallet, he paid the man the amount.
Trying to ease his pain, he looked around the room some more. "So, what Pokemon can I expect? One of those?" Neiteio pointed to an large orange crab Pokemon mounted on a display stand.
The fisherman laughed. "Nay, you won't be gettin' any Kingler, that's for sure. You'll get whoever's at the top of the box! Gahaha!" The old man chuckled and left the counter, disappearing into a closet. He returned momentarily, holding a blue PokeBall that had black criss-cross markings on it: a Net Ball.
He placed the ball on the counter and handed Neiteio a clipboard. "Now just fill out this form here... Your deposit will be sent to your account when she gets back to Maple City... and good luck gettin' past them Sudowoodo!"
Neiteio filled out the requisite information and took the Net Ball before nodding at the fisherman and leaving in silence.
"She? I wonder what he gave me?"
