That's really odd o_O I know you can get it before the elite four because I've done a mono ice run before XD I had to catch it to trade for jynx. But yeah, everywhere I read says it can be caught with the super rod :)

- Fought Gary for second time on the route to the pkmn league and lost

You can have anywhere from 1-6 grass type pokemon. They must be grass type and can be dual type. (ex. Grass/Poison)

An update. I just copied and pasted my response to the FR/LG monospecies challenge. Seemed pointless to rephrase it all.

I made it through Rock Tunnel after a touch of struggling (way too many hikers in that place). I went on through to Celadon, defeating every trainer along the way. I decided to put off the gym until resolving things at the Pokemon Tower, so that I'll have a much easier time with it.

As soon as I got to Celadon, I bought 3 Thunderstones and evolved my Pikachu. I then proceeded into the Rocket Hideout, and easily defeated Giovanni. I then made my way back to Lavender town with the Silph Scope, renamed my Raichus, and saved.

Alright, well, didn't get as far as I'd like, but time to update.
-Started with squirtle so my rival would have bulbasaur.
-Ran through saving the trainers and beat Brock.
-Bought my Magikarp for 500.
-Caught a Zubat.
-Trained and got close to the exit (saved just before the fossil maniac).

Sure added. You must only use grass types to battle. You can however have different types in your party but they cannot be trained, they must be used for HM purposes (HM Slaves) only.

UPDATE

Decided to just go for it...
Beat Misty and trainers with a lv 22 Mankey -.-
Beat Rival with ease.
Cleared Nugget Bridge.
Saved Bill and Collected SS Ticket for doing so.
Defeated Rocket Grunt who robbed house, Recieved TM28 Dig for doing so.
Mankey evolved into Primeape!
Traveled South to Vermilion city.

That's it so far, About to take on SS Anne.

Actually, in LG (I think?) You can get sandshrew before cerulean. Also, geodude is in mt moon.
