    Hello everyone!

I'm an older Pokemon fan who played Pokemon Red on release day. Although I've played all of the mainline games to some degree or other, my favorite gens remain the GBC era. Thus, I'm hoping to make new friends within the Pokemon community that enjoy gens 1 & 2.

Right now I'm playing through Pokemon Crystal again with the aim to complete the Pokedex, and I have a gen 1 Foreverlocke run that I've been slowly making my way through when the mood suits me.

Last month I finished putting together a Gen 1 ROM Hack that I had been working on for the past year as a love letter for my friend group. Unfortunately, after making it I found out most of my friends prefer or only play Gen 3+ games. I did, however, greatly enjoy the process of modding the game, and I'm very proud of what I made and learned along the way. One day I hope to work on a Gen 2 mod, but I'd like to make some friends in that community first.

Hello PaladinJohn, and welcome to the forums!
It is neat to see more long time fans of Pokémon join PokéCommunity. I have started with Red too, and it is my favourite generation! Which starter did you pick ?
I am a busy Gardevoir but I am always up for new friends!
You might want to check the Fan Games section if you are into ROM hacks! Have you also tried fan games ? I could suggest some great ones if you want!

    Nice to meet you!

As for my starter, it's Bulbasaur! To this day with over a thousand other Pokemon, he's still my favorite.

As for other ROM hacks, I've only played a few, and I've watched videos on a few more. I tend to enjoy vanilla experiences when it comes to Pokemon, but every now and then it's great to see others' creativity on display and their takes on the franchise we all love. I'll be sure to check that section out and give a few a try. Maybe it'll help inspire me for my next project! Any recommendations, especially for Gens 1 & 2 would be appreciated. :)

Neat! Bulbasaur's line is neat indeed!
My top favourite is Charizard's line since Red. The nostalgia! ^^

I haven't been into ROM hacks myself, but you can ask for recommendations in the dedicated section! What I meant was fan games besides ROM hacks, as in the ones who are made on computer with softwares like Pokémon Essentials! They feature fan made regions, some of them partly or 100% fakémon, etc...
My favourite is Insurgence, with over 900 Pokémon to catch or evolve, including a good hundred of fakémon, variants of existing ones!
Here are the variants of Bulbasaur's line (Fairy / Psychic type) to give an idea :

I wish you the best of luck with your next project!

And I'd love to be your friend!^^
    Hope you enjoy it here!

Hello there PaladinJohn, and welcome to the PC!

I happen to love Pokemon Crystal, it's probably my second favorite Pokemon game, so you'll definitely find (classic) Gen 2 fans here!

Do you have a favorite Pokemon typing?

Hey man, I think it's awesome that you're such a long-time Pokémon fan! I'm also a huge fan of gens 1 & 2, especially Pokémon Crystal. The GBC era holds a special place in my heart. It's great to see someone who shares that love.

Your Gen 1 ROM Hack sounds fascinating! It's a shame that your friends prefer the later generations, but it's fantastic that you enjoyed the modding process and are proud of your creation. I'd love to hear more about your hack and the ideas you implemented. Maybe we can even exchange tips and experiences!

I'm currently replaying Pokémon Crystal with the aim of completing the Pokédex too. It's been a nostalgic trip down memory lane. I've also been dabbling in a Gen 1 Foreverlocke run, which has been a fun challenge.

Right now, I'm actually working on a Gen 3 mod, but my love for Gen 2 is still strong. Let's connect and share our Pokémon adventures! Who knows, maybe we can inspire each other to start working on that Gen 2 mod you mentioned. Looking forward to chatting more about our favorite gens!

Do you have a favorite Pokemon typing?

Gen 2 is hands down my favorite, with Gen 1 being a close second. But I fully recognize that my enjoyment of those gens has a lot to do with nostalgia and the warm feeling I get playing them and remembering my youth. As for favorite type, Grass, hands down! I just wish they were a little better. Grass gets picked on a lot. :(

Hi PaladinJohn, welcome to the forums! What's your favorite Pokemon?

Bulbasaur for sure! If you take away all of the Final Fantasy merch I have, Bulbasaur merch is the next most prominent thing in my apartment. :P

    Definitely!

My Gen 1 mod was a simple "replacement" mod. I held a small tournament with a group of friends and they competed to earn a spot in the E4 or as a gym leader. I also let them swap out Pokemon from the dex for Pokemon from other generations so it has a smattering of mons from gens 1 - 9. So, it has all of my friends favorite mons in there. I let them pick their teams and move sets for their Gym/E4 battles and some of them even submitted their own dialog or sprites for the mod too! I wound up doing some bug fixes and QoL features while I was at it, but it was a great experience and taught me a lot about assembly.

What kind of Gen 3 mod are you working on? Is it a decomp or a binary hack?

Hey, there's nothing wrong with loving something from nostalgia alone! :p I actually didn't grow up with Pokemon at all, getting into it instead as a teen, so my love of Gen 2 doesn't have anything like that attached to it, I just think they did a great job making a well paced Pokemon game. Oddly, I'm really not fond of the remakes of Gen 2 because they added too much extra 'unskippable' chatter and fluff to the game that I really didn't care for, and made grinding levels feel like it takes forever to do. Neither of these issues were in Crystal when I finally got around to trying it out and it really fixed the Gen for me lol.
Grass really feels like it was intended to be used as a stalling, healing, status effect hell typing, which would be really cool, were it not for the massive amount of very common weaknesses they gave to the typing as well... >.> But there are still a lot of great Grass type Pokemon out there! My favorite being Grass Cat(tm) from Gen 9. (it also helps that I love the design of its final evolution, and it shares my personal favorite typing Dark lol)

    Hello!
    Welcome to the forums =3

I never played gen 2 until I got the Crystal VC for the 3DS for the simple reason of not being able to afford it at the time. Ran through the VC multiple times to get multiple Celebis =D
Who was your first starter in gen 2? Also the grass starter?

Yes. Cyndaquil is actually my favorite of the three, but that started my long tradition of always picking the grass starter. It just felt wrong not to.
