    Midi are..eww.
    The only reason I use midi is when making a new ringtone, and even then..eww.
    Don't ever compare them to MP3 or wav, cause they're not even real music.

    ok... i am totally gonna ignore your post

    Midis are virtually useless, unless you want to put them on a site or something. -_-;

    And even then people hate them.

    I don't quite understand why someone would put hours of work into one of those.

    I assume that 99.9% of the people here at PC don?t understand what MIDI really is by the recent post. Reason why a person might think that MIDI sounds crappy is because Windows users are set to default to "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" which has to be the worst MIDI sound drive for Windows computer. Get a better/real MIDI soundcard/drive like SBLive! Soundfront or Yamaha XG.

    You're right. You cannot compare MIDI to MP3/wave because they are different. MIDI is "sequence" file while MP3 or waves are "stream" file. When I mean by stream file, they are audio that has been recorded (you hear how something is being played on a different media; like a live concert has been "recorded" into a CD so you can play back the music anytime you want). Sequence file are digital file that contain information on how to play music. It's as if you are writing a note on paper and then giving it to a friend so they can read the note. So MIDI is "real music" no matter how you look at it.

    Are you talking about MIDI in web site or someone who is "composing" a MIDI? Assuming you're talking about composing a MIDI, then it's the same thing as saying (since this is mainly a Pok?mon forum; for example) why Go Ichinose, Mori'ichi Aoki and Jun'ichi Masuda would put hours of works into "composing MIDI/sequence" music for the Pok?mon games. Do you think a 16 MB cart can fit around 100-stream music? No, I don't think so. They are in some sort of MIDI sequence file. So instead of fitting 1000 stream music that might take up more than 100 MB into a 16 MB cart, they can fit a 100 KB (it's a guess) of MIDI/sequence file and use their own "instrument sampling" that might take up 1-4 MB, depending on the quality. These "instrument sampling" can be called the same when I said to get a better soundcard/drive because it depend on your MIDI soundcard/drive that will make a MIDI sounds better. Since they can use their own instrument sampling for the game, they use the instrument they composed to make the music and we hear the instrument they choose to compose their music.

    As for MIDI in general, a MIDI will only sound good if (1) who ever composed the MIDI did a great job on it and (2) who ever listen it to has the right or a good MIDI soundcard/drive. So if someone composed a MIDI in XG format, a person has to play back the MIDI on a XG soundcard/drive to hear what the composer intended for the user to hear or play it back on a good soundcard/drive that doesn't sound so crappy and too synth.

    */rant*

    Now I can give some sample on very good composed MIDI and/or sample of my MIDI soundcard/drive. I use Yamaha XG 50 v4 for XP, WinGroove and SoundMax MIDI DLS loader (this allow me to load up my own "instrument sampling") with Final Fantasy VIII DLS v1.39.

    Midi is still inferior to the derivitives like PSF though ;)

    why Go Ichinose, Mori'ichi Aoki and Jun'ichi Masuda would put hours of works into "composing MIDI/sequence" music for the Pok?mon games.
    I may be wrong, but I would assume that they get paid to do it.

    And I guess that if someone liked doing it, then I don't see why they wouldn't... but it doesn't seem like the easiest project to do for a result that isn't all that great. =/

    LOL, MIDIs are useful when I only have 15 meg of storage space on my school network and I want to have something to listen to. As for the dedication to sequence the songs - try checking out www.midibuddy.net. They have thousands of files there, all sequenced by users - you can even request people to sequence something. o_O It's a good site though. But you have to post to download the files, they have "board cash".

    Midis are very useful in my opinion. They really brighten up web pages, and theyre quite fun ^_^ I'm listening to a fairly crappy, bot nice midi of Garth Brook's 'Thunder Rolls' right now. One of my favorite songs ^_^

    Got to www.vgmusic.com
    You will see that they have over 16,000 midis! It is because people record them and make midis! You can listen to midis while you're browsing webpages like me!!

    Or they can ruin a site if it interferes with other songs. =/

    I personally think MIDIs on website should requite you to press a play button or something before it starts?cause otherwise they can make trips to the site a pain. =\

    I think midis are kinda cool X3 They can get annoying after a while of listening to them but I like colleting them, plus they're the only sound file I'll allow myself to upload to my site as downloads.

    I have a question also. How exactly do you use midis for ringtones on your phone?

    I think your phone has to be capable of playing MIDIs (most aren't). But aren't there some programs that will convert MIDIs to whatsits - ringtones - for you?

    Actually, as long as your phone can do Stage3 Polyphonic, pretty much any Midi File will work.
    Just point your WAP browser to the URL of the midi and off ya go ^_^

    LOL, me wouldn't know, I don't have a phone XD. Want one though XD
