My Grandfather Died At 83
My Grandfather Died At 83
Date: 23 May 2016
Time: 11:10 AM ET
Mood: Getting back into the swing of things.
Apologies on the dealy with The Daily Bloggity entries for the past week. In lack of better words, it was a very emotional week for not only myself but my family as well. Last Thursday, a call was made to our house that my grandfather passed away at the age of 83 in his sleep. He had no complications - i.e. was in great health according to the doctors - as was believed to have had a heart attack in his sleep. It took us very much by surprise as none of us saw this coming.

As a person, he was a mix of good and bad. He used to be an alcoholic and was semi abusive. But he turned it around in his later year for both my grandmother and great grandmother. He took care of them and made an active effort to make up for his past. He would come down to our house every weekend and hungout with my dad (his son) watching baseball/football depending on the season. He was a very simple man: enjoyed his fresh buttered bread in the morning and ate a bag of jellybeans in the evening. Went to have coffee with his neighbor each day and acted as a taxi driver bringing friends and family to old to drive to see my great grandmother. He was a good man, and I miss him.

The funeral service was very moving. As he was a veteran from the Navy, they ended up giving him a proper military send off which I wasn't expecting at all. When we got to the graveyard his casket was covered with a military flag and was surrounded by Navy men in uniform. One of them ended up playing taps after words form the priest, which was ultimately the point when I lost it. The Navy officers saluted my grandfather, folded up the flag, and gave it to my father in true respect, stating how the President thanked him for his hard fought service in the Korean War. It was definitely very hard for anyone not to get emotional with the scene that had unfolded in front of us.
