I wouldn't go ahead taking that as the gospel, because a "Nintendo rep" told them.
"Nintendo reps" have done this countless times and often get stuff wrong. Not sure if anyone remembers or cares, but at E3 last year with the "amazing" game known as Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, Josh Thomas from TBB said that a Nintendo Rep @ E3 told him "the game would be free to purchase on the eShop, you just need to buy an amiibo to play the game" - which didn't turn out to be true. But since he said he got told by a Nintendo rep, every single media outlet went along with it as if it were true, and then when it didn't, it call came back on him.
Even Alison Rapp has since commented it after she was fired from Nintendo and said it was total BS.
I know Polygon is more "reliable" than a YouTuber, and I'm not saying this information is right or wrong (and it looks to be right based on the data mine because why else would UB's have shiny models), but I still wouldn't report something spoken by a "Nintendo rep" as fact.
