  • Nazi Party gets 8.4% of the seats in the Greek Parliament

Where have I seen that symbol before...?

In the Greek elections held yesterday, the traditional socialist and conservative duo fell to unknown dephts- together, they barely got 35% of the vote, and are two seats short of a majority in the Parliament. The other 151 seats were divided between the Communists (which became the second force) and a bunch of Nationalist and Anti-European Conservative parties.

From all these, there is a party that stands out: Golden Dawn. With a mixture of populism, nationalism and racism, all of that emblazoned by a Swastika-like logo.

Is a rise of new Fascism possible in this crisis? When people are desperate, all-controlling leaders have it easier to rise and shine. Are we going back to the post-WWI depression age?

  • Two years ago, we had a rise in the BNP (British National Party) who are basically the same as this group, but having seen new mid term results, they lost all their seats.

I don't think we are going back into the post-WWI depression age, I think some people are, maybe, just getting bored of current systems in place and looking for new ones.

  • Take into account that Greece is much worse than the UK- they have been bailed out twice, people have been fired left and right, their taxes have gone from non-existent to enormous, their Government has temporarily been replaced by a technocratic one appointed by Brussels, ignoring the legitimity of the elected politicians (who could do nothing but obeying Brussel's orders anyway), their GDP has plumetted greatly and there are no sights of them recovering from the recession in this decade. That's slightly worse than the situation Britain is in.

  • Yeh, I realised that when I made the post! XD

Greece are in a serious situation, but I don't think they are going to come out on top. However, watching that video is pretty worrying! XD

The BNP have never had any MPs, they've only ever had MEPs.

If we don't find a means to replace gasoline & diesel before the world's oil reserves run out completely, I have a feeling that this is exactly what's going to happen.

But reliable alternate fuels are a completely different story; your all talking about the resurrection of fascism, which I still believe will happen if the said scenario does happen.

The greeks justified their votes to the Nazis as "votes of rage and desperation". But I haven't seen worse bullcrap before; it's more like "votes of brainless and historically uninformed apes".
I've nothing else to say on the subject, although being greek myself.

It's possible, but highly improbable. Much of the Western world is too interconnected now to follow such a thing. Still you did point out one of the main problems the Greeks had. Their Tax rates went from an effective rate of 0% to like really enforced high rates. :V

  • The economic turmoil and fear from the Great Depression is what allowed the Nazis to gradually take power in the first place. Hitler fed off people's fear and desperation. The scenario's are unsettingly similar.

Yes, the similarities are striking. You even have a vague relationship between the bailout and the treaty of Versailles... Sort of.

With that said, Hitler and the Nazi's didn't have a political party which turned into a dictatorship and attempted genocide to precede them. These Nazi's do. Whether that's a comfort considering we have such a warning to work with, or a concern seeing that it's happening anyway is what I worry about.

The birthplace of democracy turns to communism and fascism. It makes me sad.

It's okay, the giant democracy in the west (US) is a country of corporate fascism. So, it's not really that surprising that Greece is going the same way.

  • Oh, and fun fact: since the otehr parties haven't managed to form a coalition Government, all the parties will be creating a temporary one to have new elections- which means that these guys will have a minister in the Greek Government for at least one month. Yay!

  • I'd be very cautious of them until a coalition Government is formed. Seriously, history looks to be repeating itself unless they get blocked from assuming more power.

  • New elections coming next month. Current MP's aren't even going to get paid for their two days of work XD

Now the question is whether this failure will make radical parties even more attacractive or people will go back to "moderate" ones just to prevent Greece and the Eurozone from imploding.

  • I am Greek and I hate "xrisi avgi", the fascist organisation.
It's a shame that we elected them to represent us at
the greek parliament. They may have been elected at the high
(for Greece) percentage of 8.6 as a vote of rage, because
none of the previous governments really helped the country
