Team Flare
A strange organization known as Team Flare has begun to make its presence known in the Kalos region. What could they be up to?

You could easily recognize Team Flare members from their brilliant red suits.

Professor Sycamore
Professor Sycamore is the top Pokémon researcher in the Kalos region. He entrusts you and your friends with Pokémon and sends you out on your big adventure!

Professor Sycamore will even challenge you to a battle from time to time. What kind of opponent will he be?

You'll first meet the Professor in Lumiose City.

I don't really like the look of Professor Sycamore, as he looks more like an evil scientist than a professor, especially if he considers having battles with the player from time to time. He might even lose interest as a professor and work for Team Flare, although I doubt that might happen.

As for Team Flare, I think I might know what their primary objective is: Rather than stealing or releasing Pokemon they would burn down the whole Kalos region, all because Flare has something to do with fire. If we buy X or Y we may have to battle a lot of Fire-type Pokemon rather than Poison or Dark-types.

I like the look of Team Flare more than Galactic and Plasma. Their purpose, just going after money, seems lacking. If they follow the trend of going after the version mascot, a world-changing motive would have been better.

But I can't say much until more of the plot is revealed. Team Rocket in Johto, after all, had motives that had nothing to do with the version mascots. Parallels have been drawn between Gen6 to Gen2, so Gamefreak could definitely surprise us.

As for the the Professor...

I don't really like the look of Professor Sycamore, as he looks more like an evil scientist than a professor, especially if he considers having battles with the player from time to time. He might even lose interest as a professor and work for Team Flare, although I doubt that might happen.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw Sycamore being introduced alongside the bad guys was, "What if Sycamore turns out to be working for Team Flare?" I'm surprised I wasn't the only person who thought this. This would be a really pleasant surprise. Of course, it wouldn't add up to why he'd give the player a starter pokemon. Would he give you a starter in exchange for routing him 50% of your prize money, similar to how in Gen2, your mom can store money for you?

So, will we get our starter from someone else? No, because it also says that "He entrusts you and your friends with Pokémon".
So does it mean that we will go from Vaniville Town to Lumiose city right in the beggining of the game, without any Pokémon? (and don't forget that the nearest city from the starting town is Santalune City)

That is interesting, I wonder how it will play out, I know Trevor gives you the Pokedex, as shown in this.
