Hello all. My name's Jon and I'm new here and just getting back into pokemon. So much new stuff and changes its overwhelming. About a month ago I stumbled across some youtubers that did booster pack/box openings. The kid inside me got interested as my nostolgia went haywire. Anyway, Im just a collector nothing more. I really like any holo/ex/full art stuff. I found my collection of base set cards along with some other randoms.

    Some questions:

    1. Is it worth collecting any of the older sets, or have I missed too much?

    2. Should I just buy breakthrough packs and start with that? I did recently buy some of the breakthrough packs with mewtwo on them.

    3. The breakthrough packs I did buy, I went to organize them in order 1-162. And realized there was a different set mixed in? I believe it was 160 and not 162. A majority of my new cards are /162.

    4. Is collecting full sets, or strictly rares, or what considered the norm for a casual collector?

    5. If I was to only collect holos/ex/reverse holos etc (the pretty/cool cards) is there any market for the commons, uncommons, regular rares, trainers etc? Wondering if I could sell thm to recoup some money.

I'm sure I'll have more questions, thanks for your time.

Welcome to PC and hope you have a good time here.

Answer to first question: I've got all of the older sets and they're still worth a lot here.

Answer to second question: I've never bought any breathrough packs before. I never heard of such a thing here.

Answer to fourth question: I don't think it really matters what you collect (well to me it doesn't).

Answer to last question: Down here there are some card stores where you can sell the Commons, Uncommons, etc. at. I'm currently working at a store where you can sell those cards. I'm working at a Pokémon Center store.

Hey Jon welcome to PC dude! Honestly, unless you have the money or want them for pure nostalgic game then I wouldn't suggest looking for and buying the older games. Some of them are so hard to find and so freakin' expensive nowadays that they're not worth it imo! However, a sweet way to play them is through roms; that's how I play older games now for the most part.

As for the cards, I'm not a big fan on that. The best place would be to check out the Pokemon TCG part of the forum and they'd be more help than anything I could offer. I like the cards though, I had a friend who was in a phase of collecting them last year. He said I reminded him of wobbuffet so he gave me a wobbuffet card haha. Anyways, welcome to the site and if you ever wanna chat about Pokemon or anything feel free to hit me up with a visitor message. :)

Hi! PC's Trading Card Game section mod here! I've got some answers to your questions:

    1. Never too late to start, but if you're looking to turn a profit in the near future, you're in the complete wrong hobby. Collecting Pokemon cards has to be something you're prepared to never make money on.

    2. Probably the easiest and cheapest route. It also gives yourself time to learn how to differentiate between fakes and the real deal if you decide to move onto older sets.

    3. What boxes did you specifically buy? There was no recent English set with only 160 cards. What's the set symbol on those cards?

    4. You can collect however you like. Full sets, rares, specific Pokemon, cards you like the art of, those are all ways I have seen people collect. Personally, I prefer the full set route.

    5. There's a minor market, but you won't recoup anywhere near the amount of money you'd put in, since individually for most commons and uncommons, you'd be lucky to get $0.10 per card, and with rares those are typically only $1 or $2. There are exceptions, but that's wholly dependent on what's useful in competitive play at the time.

Donavannj, thanks for the reply. Nice to meet you.

I honestly just bought booster packs that looked cool, but I want to say the majority was Breakthrough and a couple Primal Clash.

Now I look it up, the /160 set is from Primal Clash. And the /162 set is from Breakthrough.

I bought about 10 booster packs total, and managed to pull a Mega Mewtwo EX, and a bunch of other cool holos.
