Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

Plus everyone is conveniently ignoring that most third-party 'physical releases' actually aren't physical releases at all and are just god damn game codes in a box. It's practically still a digital version.

This push towards an all digital future is fucking sickening and there's no other way to put it.

I strongly disagree. Personally, I consider it a modern marvel that I can just grab my computer and have easy access to dozens of games without having to fiddle with a stack of CD-ROMs, and not having to manufacture as much plastic helps in the fight against climate change. Yes, in theory, publishers could revoke access to digital titles, but I'm not aware of this ever happening in practice (it would be terrible for business if companies took away games people paid for). The main way people lose access to their games IRL are them getting lost or breaking, the former pretty much isn't an issue with digital, and they're also better on the durability front. Switch carts specifically are essentially SD cards internally, and in 20 years they'll likely have gone bad and be unusable (DS games, which were manufactured with a more durable structure, are already starting to fail in some instances). Meanwhile, you can still redownload games purchased even as far back as the Wii.

What? This is already happening. You can search it up and get a bunch of articles about games like The Crew getting removed from users' library by the publisher.
