We're humans. We want to be well liked and appreciated for who we are, whether we admit to others or not that we care what people think about us. And I think it's important to remember that, at least on a fundamental level. You shouldn't let what others think of you affect you too much, though.
I do get nervous when I meet new people, and I always try to present myself in my best possible way that would most likely persuade them to at least think that I'm a decent human being. But I also don't lose sleep over people not liking me.
