Except maybe Ritchie, and characters of the day. I guess trainer never wanna nickname their mons, but why do you think, say, Ash and Co. don't nickname their Pokemon? It's always been such a bore to me that none of them do!

Mairin nicknamed her Pokémon and she is not character of the day. Yes, she did not appear in the anime yet, but she was main character of the Mega Evolution specials.

But my main guess as to why main characters doesn't nickname their Pokémon is that the writers simply want the viewers to be familiar with the main Pokémon's original names, which they'll see in games, TCG and other merchandise. IMO it's form of commercial for the official Pokémon names.

Yeah. I am not a fan of nicknamed pokemon. It can get confusing when there are 30 different pokemon that can be called on. I think that is why they keep it simple.

Nicknaming is more of a manga thing. Even in that, I get confused unless they are obvious.

And I think the only reason Richie nicknamed his, was because he had all of the same pokemon as Ash, and when the anime was made, they wanted to keep them apart so the names wouldn't get confused.

Like Horn said, the likely reason why nicknames aren't used a lot (with the aforementioned exceptions of Ritchie and Mairin) is so that the viewers can get familiar with the actual Pokemon names.

I'll have to go along with this too, but would like to add that when characters of the day call out their Pokémon by their nicknames, they'll sooner or later tell Ash & Co. what Pokémon they're actually talking about. For example, in the Orange Islands episode Wherefore, Art Thou Pokémon, when the group asked Ralph and Emily who "Tony" and "Maria" (respectively) were, they responded with whatever Pokémon they actually were (male and female Nidoran, in respective order of the nicknames as listed).

Generally speaking, the anime is often about introducing Pokémon and the general series, so nick-names are usually kept to one-time appearances and cameos. This does seem slightly weird compared to the general trend of the series, which is less technical, and in that sense perhaps following the travels of Gary Oak would make for a better series if they wished to refresh the anime.

The owners of blastoise and venusaur in mewtwo strikes back nicknamed their Pokemon. the blastoise was Shellshocker , but I forgot Venusaur's name.

The Venusaur in that movie was called Bruteroot. Curiously though, those trainers had a bunch of pokemon but only had nicknames for those 2.
