Oh man, we've got possible aliens guys.

I don't know who I am either.

    Scientists have just discovered the first planet with a "100%" chance of supporting life as we know it. The only major differences between it and Earth are its size - it is much larger - and it doesn't spin on its axis - leaving half the planet in constant darkness, and half in constant light.

    Pretty fascinating stuff.

    The article itself.

    Even if their isn't life there, I would so want to live on the edge of dark and light. If I'm cold, I go to my right, if I'm hot, I go to my left ;p.

    Oh yes, I read about this. Seems very interesting. I'm just curious how long it would take to actually get there, after all, it is 20 light years away.

    Though, supposing we do get there, I hope it isn't something out of Alien and it hasn't got a horrible species that feeds on our first settlers there ;-;

    I'd love to imagine the look on the astronauts' faces when they cautiously exit their spaceship with weapons at the ready only to be greeted by a bunch of fuzzy aliens lazily eating vegetation. :p
    Btw, when we DO have contact with the aliens on the new planet, tell them to stop stealing our cattle.

    I'm hoping it's more like Pandora from Avatar, haha.

    Hahahaha, amazing! I sure hope not either!

    I have heard of that planet as well, and yeah, it would take WAYYYYYYY too long to get there, atleast with the technology we have today. But hey, when the Sun is going to die and we're all going to die...maybe we'll have the technology to go there! Who knows! Maybe it'll be like Wall-E...lol.

    Suppose we do find other life, it doesn't appear hostile, but what do we do? Would we attack it, or attempt to communicate with it?

    I mean, they could end up being really dangerous and stuff.

    This is amazing. What I don't like is that the planet remains in a fixed position and not rotating, so what that means is to achieve a balance of light and darkness, we'd have to settle in the ring that's half-illuminated, half in the dark.

    It would be fantastic for growing crops though. Plus we could always just develop screens to stop light from getting into buildings during the 'night'.

    On TV they said one side was too hot, and the other too cold... even though light/dark can be fixed, as mentioned, what about fixing the heat and the extreme cold? I know we could use heaters and blankets, etc, but effectively it would be like living in Antartica all the time (which would be fine for some) or living right next to the equator (in comparison to Earth right now).

    Yeah if Earth exploded we could live in the middle of the planet or something, but that would only be the survivors and... would be a terrible way of life, tbh. Unless there is some way to actually get the new planet to rotate, but that's unlikely.

    I vote we find a planet closer to us. :D

    Though in general, it is good to have a backup though, just... not a perfect one. XD;

    Interesting. At least we have a more viable options than living on our own moon, Mars and one of Saturn (or was it Jupiters?) moon.

    I read somewhere that if we encounter beings who are intellectually superior to us, we'd probably have no more reason to think for ourselves. Instead, they'd be to us as we are to livestock.

    I just read that over, and it just seems ridiculous.

    If they are hostile, and more advanced technologically, the government would probably play kiss-up and try to work out a peace treaty. If they aren't hostile or particularly smart, governmental officials would probably pass a bill and dissect them in the name of science. After which, people would naturally start protesting and rioting. Goverment officials would probably then pass a bill and dissect them in the name of science, secretly.

    I've known about this for awhile. They discovered it back in 2008.

    However, the "100%" chance is new though. Previously they thought that since it doesn't rotate on its axis due to the close proximity to the star creating a tidal lock that the day-half would be boiling hot and the night-half would be freezing cold.

    By the way, it's orbit is only I think..two weeks? Somewhere around there. It orbits a red dwarf, which are much much more cooler and dimmer than normal stars like ours. Hence how it can support life being so close.

    And there are three planets that are closer to the star in that system.

    And this planet is about the size of Neptune or a little smaller. So..just trying to put things into easy size comparison.

    funny to imagine the possibility of us being the aliens to an outside civilization. this is an awesome discovery, i'll be keeping updated on this! :-0

    That's fascinating! O: I love learning about space, so this interests me greatly. :3

    ...But if aliens DO indeed exsist on that planet... I won't be able to sleep at night.. because I'll be thinking about if they're going to invade over here or what. ;( But I wonder what aliens actualy look like, if they're different to all those videos on youtube. Though I like the sound of a half warm/cold half dark/light planet. It sounds pretty unique! :D

    That is cool I hope the aliens don't invade us.

    That's pretty interesting. It adds yet another alternative if the Earth gets hit by a meteorite or the Sun blows up. And I want to go there on a vacation with my Grandchildren, if possible.

    I'm sure if humans invent something powerful enough to shift the gravitational pull they could make that planet spin on an axis so both sides have light and darkness during different times of the day.

    Interestingly enough, Bungie used that planet in their last halo game 'Halo Reach' as the planet Reach. :P

    Well I figured it was only a matter of time before we found a planet like this. I still find it odd that it doesn't spin on an axis, and its that big. That could be a problem because without that, there are no seasons, and it effects the electromagnetic field and atmosphere of the planet itself.

    Just because it can support human life, doesn't mean it can support alien life. Alien lifeforms might need totally different conditions to survive, so we've probably got aliens everywhere else too. :D
