Hey there folks! I have a big question. I played Pokemon Red and Yellow all the way through and haven't played one since. I am planning to buy my first DS this weekend, and have about decided that Pokemon Platinum will be my first purchase. I have read a lot about the game and everything sounds great. I watched the anime back in the day but stopped once the adventure moved past the original 150 pokemon (so I have no idea who any of these new pokemon are). Here are my questions - -

    1) How many obtainable Pokemon are there in Platinum and are ANY of them from the original 150?

One of the coolest things about Pokemon to me was the ability to trade, and one of the main reasons I stopped playing was because I could never find anyone to trade with (People always wanted rare for rare, making it impossible for me to have more than one rare pokemon without having to own 6 copies of the game and two DS's).

    2) I understand that you can trade via WiFi now but do people trade well or will I have to buy another game and DS to truly catch them all? :)

Thanks in advance for all the help!!!

Grats on the new DS and Platinum! As for your first question, there's 493 obtainable pokemon, that's including the original 150. You will be able to obtain a number of the original 150 after you beat the elite four and such. As for your second question, you shouldn't need 2 DS's because as far as I have experienced, the WiFi trading is pretty well used and fair, and there are a lot of people on these forums willing to help you obtain pokemon you want. Some new stuff you should look into are item-evolution trades, shiny pokemon, and EV's. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the new games (I've owned every version since blue/red, and enjoyed every bit!)

Leave me VM's or PM's if you have any other questions, or just want someone to talk to.

Is there an online strat guide or something like that? I have no idea what item-evolution trades, shiny pokemon, and EV's are...lol.

All I really remember from my days playing the original Pokemon was how much of a pain it was to get Mew...having to cheat to get Grand Pokeballs (or whatever they were called) in order to get the birds (cause if you lost them, they never appeared again)...and the overall frustration of not having anyone to trade with.

There's a lot of guides on these forums, and serebii.net is another very helpful site. There's not as much cheating involved in these games as there used to be, which is nice in a way, and most of the legendaries re-appear when you faint them or run away. Shinies are alternate colored pokemon that are very rare (1 in 8000-something chance) which are currently what I've been over-hunting.

gameFAQs is a great website for walkthroughs and help on the game. If you visit the trade forum here, I am sure you can find some reasonable trades and make some new friends.

This is SO cool that there is this big of a fan base! I thought I was being so weird wanting to play Pokemon at 26...but I guess I am not alone. I even started looking into the DVD sets to catch up on the series (I didn't make it all the way through Indigo League).

I can't wait to pick up the game tomorrow (the store better have it).

Finding someone to trade with is not too hard with WiFi. In fact, you can use this forum to set up trades with other members.

There is also the GTS where you just drop a Pokemon inside and it gets sent over WiFi. You determine the Pokemon you want in exchange and someone who has that may or may not conduct the trade with you... Even while your game is offline!
However, remember that you cannot use the GTS to look for a Pokemon until you have seen it in the game already!

Since all of you are so nice, I am hoping you will answer this. I know it is probably on the forums, but since I am out of the loop these forums are like German to me. What in the heck is:

    1) EV?
    2) How do I know if it is a shiny if I don't know what color the original is?
    3) Are the shinies just random wild Pokemon of different colors?
    4) What is item evolution?

    5) Does the game explain all this stuff as you go? I mean how do you guys all know this stuff?2

Oh wait...one more question (and then I will try not to bug you guys anymore)..

    Is Mew in this game?

Yes he is still and always will be my favorite.

    1) Effort Value
2)When Encountered Shiny Pokemon Have Stars Fly Off Them
3)Not Exactly. They're Not "Random" Say You Could Find Ekans You Would Only (In That Area) Get A Shiny Ekans
4)It Means If You Give A Pokemon An Item And Then Trade It With The Item OR Use An Item On Them
5)Urr...I Don't Actually Know That Myself...
    6)Not Without Meeting These Conditions
    1.Got The National Dex
2.Have A GBA Game With Mew In
Then You Can Ask Around The Forums About Pal Park.

Yeah those trade forums are just too confusing, but thanks for showing me.

I mean are people just giving Pokemon away? It seems like they are but I can't tell.

And what is with the events? Do they have like tournaments you can go to and you get Pokemon for winning or something? I don't get that at all. I got the shinies, I understand that now. EV'd I still don't get (Effort Value).

This game is so much deeper than it appears on the surface. I may be in way over my head.

Which is why we all love it so much, amirite? These games aren't just for kids anymore, they're a lot more complex than at first glance, which makes them invaluable as entertainment. Also, the game explains everything that is absolutely necessary to know, which is why I brought up other things like EV's and shinies (When I probably shouldn't have...). You should probably just try to have fun with the game for a while, and once you get comfortable with it you can start diving deeper. After all, it would be a bad thing for you to get overwhelmed and turned away from such a great series. ;O

    I'll stop ranting now. =P

    1) How many obtainable Pokemon are there in Platinum and are ANY of them from the original 150?

-You have 250 to catch in Platinum WITHOUT the National Dex. Most are (obviously) Gen IV, although ones like Zubat, Geodude, Pikachu, Electabuzz, Machop, and Magikarp appear. You can also trade for the originals over the wifi, you just won't get the pokedex data for them until you see all the Sinnoh ones.

    2) I understand that you can trade via WiFi now but do people trade well or will I have to buy another game and DS to truly catch them all? :)

It's your choice whether you want to buy another DS for convenience's sake, but with the GTS, you can trade for any Pokemon you've seen. The Pal Park is unlocked once you gain the National Dex, which will enable you to transfer Pokemon from Gen III. And of course, Wifi is an option, all you need are player names and friend codes.

As a little note, you only really need to truly understand EVs if you plan on playing the games competitively. For playing through the game, I wouldn't worry about them. Enjoy the game first, then dive into the frustrating Egg Moves and EV Training second. XD

But anyway, this kind of stuff can be looked up in the FAQ thread and if you need to ask a question, please be sure to use the Quick Questions and Answers thread, stickied at the top of the D/P/Pt section, in the future. ^^

    Closes~
