I surely remember the days we had to wait months after the Japanese release, in fact Australians had to wait the longest to play Black & White (we were last in the order of release for that, when normally we had our release occur between the American and European, however Australia actually got the first international release in the case of Gold & Silver) and I remember getting heavily spoiled by other countries that got the games before our release came around, thanks to Let's Play videos appearing all over YouTube.
When I first heard about X & Y's "worldwide" release, I was worried if they weren't going to successfully pull it off, and apparently I was true when I saw those leaks coming from Canadians and Italians who bought the games early. However it did have a positive side though, because remember that we saw all those Vivillon patterns getting revealed, that we didn't know about for months since the original pink (aka Meadow Pattern) Vivillon was revealed. It was thanks to one of those screenshots that I found what form my game (I eventually got the games come December) was possibly getting, and that turned out to be the River Pattern.
But still, it was fun speculating and looking at those leaks so we knew what they were going to throw at us in the game. The Europeans getting a week's delay here might have been due to said "early release" of X/Y but I guess that may remain a mystery. Still, they did at least make an improvement with the gap between Japanese and international releases lately, in fact Black 2 & White 2 got released internationally only 4 months after the Japanese. FireRed & LeafGreen had a similar case as well, being that both the Japanese and international release also occurred in the same year. I do feel sad for the Europeans who are upset they are worried about getting spoiled due to the other regions getting the games a week ahead of them, but it's not as drastic of a gap compared to previous games barring X/Y. I remember one of the speculated theories behind the European delay was a possible editing out of the Game Corner (assuming if it does return), given they have anti-gambling laws in force over there since 2008 if memory serves me right. But you know, it'll probably never be known.
