This is actually my favourite mini arc in the anime, to date. It showed how far Dawn had come to that point as a character, and watching Ash compete was more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be...I was actually quite sad when he got knocked out by some random nobody.

That said, I felt it was too soon for Dawn to beat May. It showed how much she'd developed as a Co-ordinator. But considering May wiped the floor with Zoey before that, when she went on to win the entire Grand Festival, it didn't really add up to me; it would have been better if Dawn had lost to May then and beaten Zoey at the end of the series.

...especially considering I never liked Zoey all that much as a character.

    Hmm...

Well, yes, it's been a long time since that arc, and I honestly really liked it. Dawn was able to earn her second ribbon after being in a huge losing streak. I thought the match against May was a fun one, and I couldn't have asked for better. Though...Ash entering the Wallace Cup still bugs me to this day for some reason? Man. I don't know. It's been a long while.

I always thought the same thing. I was sure May was going to win, even though I like Dawn it would of been character growth for her too. Especially with May's current Pokemon, it just felt maybe the season was in favor of Dawn.

One of Dawn's most endearing traits for me was her ability to lose repeatedly but still eventually bounce back from it, which is why I thought her winning against May - a highly experienced co-ordinator who took out the girl who would become the Top Co-ordinator - was strange. I guess it was a very "out with the old, in with the new" sort of thing, but I think it would have been better if she had lost that match too and May had won the whole thing outright to show both Dawn and Zoey that they had a long way to go. At the time it was really positive, but in hindsight it was a very odd choice...
