yeah, it killed me when ash lost against Roark and Paul won, considering that he championed the orange league and the battle frontier, and then some new chump comes through and makes ash look like a loser, very bad choices on the creators part, i think if they wanted a rival this early, it should've been another experienced trainer thats been through what at least half of what ash has been though

Yah it really annoys me how Ash's Pikachu, beats a Dragonite (with a little help but still, beats a Dragonite), helps Ash get through at least 20 gym battles and the battle frontier, beats a friggin Regice (that was stupid but hey, it's the creator's idea, idiots), and yet, ties with an Elekid. Elekid, a baby pokemon with nowhere near as much expierence as Pikachu and is being trained by a newbie trainer. WTF

I actually just thought of something, for all we know Paul isn't a newbie. (Though I missed a couple eps so ignore this if I'm wrong) He seems a bit stronger than that, he may have started in Johto or Hoenn around the time Ash did. After all, we never actually saw him getting a Chimchar from Rowan.

Judging from his attitude, I highly doubt it. He might have Elekid for quite a while, but I think he would have let Elekid evolve if it could. He does want the strongest possible Pokemon after all, and since Elekid hasn't evolved...

yeah, i've expressed this before, i dont think that Chimchar is his starter

No one has said clearly enough so that we KNOW that Paul is a starting trainer. It says so on serebii, but he doesn't act remotely like a ten year old, if he was ten, he'd be just as clueless as dawn is now I think he's around Ash's age and caught Elekid before he went to sinnoh, what became of his other pokemon, i havn't a clue, and i don't know why, seeing as he wants the strongest pokemon, he didn't bring them with him.

Hopefully the creators will make an episode explaning Paul, his attitude, and his life before sinnoh

Remember when on the first episode when Dawn saw that chimchar from the professor getting carried away by a starraptor? Well when wwe first saw Paul he was fighting a flock of starly so probably he ended up cathing Chimchar which that staraptor might have dropped. It's not clear where Chimchar is from.

Paul definetely annoys me, but then again, this season doesn't seem to really make any sense XD. Pikachu should've been strong enough to at least defeat Elekid at that point. It was able to defeat just about anything. Wounded legendary pokemon, defeated a freaking ONIX (Seriously, WTF). Plus it helped him through what seems at least 3/4 of all gyms. I can't wait til Paul get's his ass kicked by Ash (either when Ash's non-Sinnoh pokemon get back [Boy oh boy, Paul will be surprised when he sees Charizard and Sceptile in a double battle], or when Pikachu and the Sinnoh pokemon get strong again).

Yea seriously that battle was a great injustice. Pikachu's power level is OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND for Christ's sake.
It is explicitly shown that there is something 'unique' about Ash's Pikachu which sets it apart from others of its kind; Team Rocket's Meowth says early in the first series that the strength of Ash's Pikachu exceeded that of its evolutionary power. For this reason, Team Rocket's attempts to capture Pikachu become a significant theme throughout much of the first series.

I mean why the hell would Team Rocket spend years trying to capture just an ordinary Pikachu? If I am not mistaken Trainer Red's Pikachu when you face him in game has naturally haxored stats putting his Pikachu on legendary/uber level.

Meh that was a pathetic battle. The weaksauce/braindead/utter-n00b Ash annoyed me more than Paul did.

Paul's a pretty determend person, even if he's a begginer.
He's tough, he's mean, he's the exact opposite of Ash.
Ash really needed a rival like this in the series, and I guess he found one.

EDIT: Achamo, I agree with you on that part. Paul dosen't know what he's up aganst. ;)

you know what, I hate paul.

He comes in calling ash is hopeless, even when ash surpasses his ranks as a trainer in MANY WAYS.

If I were ash, I would shove my badges in his face and say "NOW WHOS PATHETIC?!"

Now, I'm just waiting for Paul to be run over, eatin by zombies, killed in a plane crash, or any horrible way kenny dies in the South Park series and not come back to life like kenny does.

Red's pikachu in Gold/Silver sucked so bad, why? Because it's a pikachu!! GAH that thing sucks soooo bad unless you evolve it. That's why Ash's pikachu sucks, it may be high in level but has mediocre stats. Course, the way the anime works, nothing from the game, in other words its origin, apply which is why I prefer the manga and yet I still love watching Ash get his butt whooped by people he should be wasting.

I don't know whats up, what bothers me more is the overal losing streak. He ties Paul, looses to Rourk, looses to Gardena, with his resime he should be walking all over the early "challenges."
I can't wait for when he decides to try and kicks Paul and Gary one after the other in somewhere like the Sinnoh league championship. i think its about time Ash at least had top 3 finish, second maybe.

If I was Ash and I was called "pathetic" I would RUSH to the Pokemon center and to the PC telephone thingy, and GET ALL MY STRONGEST POKEMON! Call Charizard!

and then when Paul shows up, He Could Kick his "BUTT" Home.

I still don't see why Ash is offended. He topped in, how many leagues? About 4! How about Paul? Let's see uh.. NONE!

That's what I think.

I'm curious...

Has it been clearly stated that Paul is a beginner? How do we know for sure Paul hasn't been through other leagues on his own?

I can't recall Paul saying he was just starting his journey, and he looks older than ten years old...

I could very easily be wrong, so correct me if I am, but I wouldn't be suprised if Paul is actually a well-versed trainer.

Nobody knows what age they are in the anime. May is supposed to be ten when she starts out and it's said that Ash was the same age at that time. Huh? It took him a year to get all eight badges in the indigo league. The anime screws up alot so much I can't stand it.

Well it states that it took him one year to get to the eight badge, and in the epsidoe when Ash challenges Brandon with his first four pokemon he says, "Alot has happened over the YEARS." (PLURAL)

That's not the same Chimchar, I believe. That Chimchar was safely escorted back to the lab, as it was present when Dawn was making her choice (for some dumb reason, the trouble maker thought she was going to pick him, but was flustered when Dawn went for the most obvious of choices).

But yeah, you're right. Paul's Chimchar's origins are unknown to this point.
