I've noticed, well, a lot of members can't really afford/or whatever reason to donate to be a Supporter. For all those members that can't donate money, I thought it would be nice to be able to get a supporter tier without having to donate. like if a Mod/S-Mod notices a member who often helps others, does something to deserve it, they can get a chance to get awarded a supporter tier. What do you think?

This is a alrright idea, although I am pretty sure there is an Emblem for helping other members out.
I bettter shuddup or someones gonna murder me. :X

The idea behind being a supporter is that people have donated the keep the (albeit, dying) server are recognised. Helping out is a good way to get a good reputation (not rep, lol) and become a respected member, but at the end of the day, it's not what the system was invented for; if people can become a supporter without donating, that means less in the way of funds to keep PC running.

Alternatively, you can get someone else to donate for you. As in another member.

Yeah, but it'd be nice to get something else, something to encourage people to help.

It'd encourage people helping each other, and it wouldn't be easy either. just to give people who can't really donate a chance.

There are many emblems for supporting the community in various ways - supporter status is something reserved for those who financially support the community.

But the perks and special features supporters get encourages members to help the server out by donating. You should be helping each other out without encouragement anyways

You're telling me you don't have $5 to donate? That's a tad bit silly thing to say. And most of them time, most people can't donate because:

    a) their parents won't let them use their credit card
    b) don't have a paypal account(kinda ridiculous not to have one in this day and age)
    c) because they don't feel the need to donate because they're fine without the perks.

You can win supporter status as a prize in some of our various get together events..

I don't mean I personally don't have $5, but some people mightn't be able to for the reasons you listed.

    but okay then.
I just thought it might be a nice idea, but I understand. :3

To be fair, I don't think that (a) People under 18 can legally create a Paypal account, which in turn needs to be linked to a Bank Account or Credit Card or (b) younger people should have access to electronic money services without their parents.

But I still believe it should not be achievable for free.

As Steve said, it's available via certain competitions.

Let me just add to this a bit, because I think it needs it, and he did hit the nail on the head.

For people who can't donate because of A&B, don't sweat it. Blogs as a perk comes at 5k posts. I can't say the same about the rest of the perks...but who said you have to keep up with the joneses anyways? I strongly encourage non-supporters to push the envelope with what they have, everyone knows the limitations of a normal member and will not think down on you for being unable to donate.

Even if you don't have a paypal account, ignore Zet's comment there. There isn't any shame in that.

For people who don't donate because of reason C, that's fine and well. We need more minds like you among the non-supporters...especially if you're the kind who contributes to the community regardless of status and pushes the envelope with what you have. (In terms of profile, blog if you have 5k posts, ect, ect...) See Rukario's post above. It's not impossible to win such in a contest.

Even if you can't donate for that unlisted reason that I will call 'D', which is not donating because you simply can not afford it, There isn't shame in it.

You have to be 15 to create one iirc, since that's how old I was when I made a paypal account.

@Pachy: In this day and age, most online payments are done through paypal.

    I am against this idea.

I don't see the point. If you haven't donated, then why should you get donator status? I know that you might not be able to donate because of X, Y and Z reasons, but tough. :/
I don't mean that in a tough way, but it is a little unfair that you guys would get some supporter status when the actual supporters have donated. Yes, it is about wanting to help the community, and that is why I donated, however, it is nice to be different with the blue user title and such.

Think of it as you have worked all your life to get somewhere, you finally get there, then someone does it in a day. Not fair is it? (Extreme example).

There are other statuses other than PC suporter that you can try and achive in the future as well. For example the Event Organizer bar. And it is nice and green too :)

I cant donate for reason a). But I will try and achieve the Event Organizer one day, as that is one way I would like to help out PC.

The Event Organizer user bar doesn't last forever. It'll be removed after the event(s) have ended. Besides, I don't think people would want the green user bar if an event isn't running, it's unnecessary. :/

Or, if a mod or s-mod (or any other rank for that matter) notices a member who often helps others, and contributes to a specific forum, they can be recommended for a moderator position*. Like we do already. Most of the active members in the community do have a sense of drive to help out members who need it, whether they're interested in being a moderator or not. Not because of encouragement, but because they care. If you're a member of the community and want a status as encouragement to help people here who don't know any better, then the only appropriate status to use as encouragement, use a moderator position. I'm sure a lot of people help out the community because they have a desire to become a moderator. There's nothing wrong with that. Then again, you can be helpful and not expect anything in return. Medieval, right?

*They'd have to, of course, have majority vote in HQ. We don't randomly find good members and just make them a moderator at the snap of our fingers.

I don't think this is a good idea since people who actually donate to the site might feel like it's a waste if some people won it without donating money.

And like Patchisou Yutohru said, they can just recommend for moderator if they're being helpful around forums, etc.

Though, honestly, I think the idea of having to encouraging members to be helpful and expect something in return is a little absurd. You should be helpful because you care, not because you want something. We do have a handful of members who are helpful because they care, whether they want to become a moderator or not. I know I'd prefer a moderator who genuinely cares and who helps around because they care over a moderator who wants to be a moderator so they pretend to care. That's like staff turning around and demanding they get paid to be staff on here and manage the forums... I mean, the most the staff want in return is a little understanding by members who don't have experience on staff that we're only here to keep the community clean, not "out to get you" when you do something wrong.
