4th Gen Platinum: pick my team

    Was kind of getting in the mood to do another playthrough of Platinum sometime soon. Could use something to spice it up though (not looking to do a challenge run though, if I wanted to do that I'd go over to Challenges section), just a little bit, so I thought that maybe I could have other people select my party for me and see how that goes.

    Nobody has to list a full party (probably best not to really), and the one stipulation is that it can't be stuff like "solo the game the with Magikarp" or "use a team of lvl 4 Bidoofs". Would like to actually make it to the end of the game lol.
     
    These are just some ideas. I'll leave flexibility by giving a group to choose from instead of outright picking it for you ;)

    1) Starter: Piplup, Chimchar or Turtwig. Honestly, I have no personal preference but I find Piplup line to be irresistible.

    2) Normal Type: It can be anything that falls into the category so it can be the following Pokemon lines: Starly, Hoothoot Bidoof, Aipom, Buneary, Glameow, Happiny, Cleffa(Normal in Platinum), Munchlax, Lickitung, Togepi(Normal in Gen 4) and Porygon. Eevee too but I doubt you'll keep it as an Eevee. Personally I'd go with Buneary or Togepi out of respect for Dawn but I'll leave that to you. Normal Type really helps against Fantina and other Ghost Type users.

    3) Ice Type: You'll likely want one due to Cynthia so it can be any of the following: Snover, Sneasel, Snorunt, Swinub and Glaceon. If you wanted to do a Dawn inspired run, Swinub would be my pick(plus it'd be solid against Volkner).

    4) Bug Type: I find Bug Types to be really solid while also countering Gardenia, Lucian and anyone with Grass, Dark or Psychic Types. Plus Bug Types generally are ignored so I figure I'd suggest a run with one. Pick from Kricketot, Burmy, Wurmple, Heracross, Skorupi(even though it loses Bug Typing when it evolves, I'll still accept it), Yanma and Scyther.

    5) Counter to Rival: Basically your rival takes the Pokemon that best defeats yours so you'll want something to easily defeat it. If you go with Piplup, then Bug, Fire and Ice work well. If you go Chimchar, then Electric would be my pick since Steel doesn't resist Electric. Finally if you go Turtwig, then Rock, Water or Flying(once it reaches its 2nd stage). Seeing as the choice here is dependent on #1, I'll leave this wide open.

    6) Wildcard. Basically pick a Pokemon of your choosing that best fills out your team.
     
    Duo the game with Magikarp and a lvl 4 Bidoof.
     
    rotom is a fun pokemon to use, even though iirc you won't be able to access the form changes. take him for a spin. also, ditch your starter. i find that that's always a way to freshen up my playthroughs when i relieve myself of the obligation of keeping the starter, unless you were in the mood to use them of course. that's no issue, but once i started doing that (and just as a general thing, not in platinum specifically) i felt like more doors opened to me in terms of variety.

    or you could try to use something particularly difficult to maintain, like some of the bugs this gen. kricketune comes to mind, or even wormadam...form choice is up to you. mothim if you have no patience or preference for the gender of your burmy, lol.

    yeah, that's what prevented me from using the form changes until like. what. post-game in hgss?? aha. so dumb. :( i still recommend vanilla rotom regardless though! have you made any selections so far? a good method i also like is just looking at the regional dex for the game i want to play and seeing what really grabs me. like you ever just get this urge to use forretress? man. forretress...i love that one. see i've talked myself into using one and i'm not playing any pokemon games rn.
     
    So atm I think I'm going to do the game with a Magikarp and a lvl 4 Bidoof roll with:
    Starly
    Rotom
    Houndour

    Though that still leaves half the team

    Most critical piece to fill in rn would be something to water HM with

    Starly: Normal/Flying <- solid Flying Type that crushes Gardenia and Maylene
    Rotom: Electric/Ghost <- Counters Crasher Wake and any Water Types provided you can get it early enough. Also can battle Fantina, although Starly does a decent job being immune to Ghost moves.
    Houndour: Fire/Dark <- pretty much rules out Chimchar with this pick. Solid pick for Maylene's Lucario, Fantina's Ghosts, Byron's Steel Types and Candice's Ice Types.

    As for filling out the rest of your roster, how about Turtwig starter(Grass/Ground), Glaceon(Ice) <- sucker for 130 SpA Ice Beam(just try and do something about that speed) and Gallade(Psychic/Fighting)

    To run with the Surf HM, why not take a challenge like Lumineon? I only ever used it once before and it was quite frail but still completed the E4 with it. Whiscash would be another fun option.

    I also like some of the "new" evolutions that you can get mid-game like Gliscor and Rhyperior for something a bit different. I also don't know how many people double back and get Leafeon in a regular playthrough but I have used one before and it was pretty good!

    Personally, I try not to focus on Pokémon that are common in other games so that you can play with a bit more variety.
     
    I know you've already made your decision on your Ghost type, but I'd just like to say that I think Mismagius is criminally underrated and I loved using one when I got the chance to! It's a shame it's such a forgettable 'mon because it actually isn't half-bad! You can run a decent Calm Mind set of CM/Shadow Ball/Tbolt/(insert whatever here, probably Icy Wind if you care about Move Tutor stuff and you want coverage; plus the speed debuff can be useful for your other team members) and it'll work fairly well. Although the big concern here is that Mismag's defenses are pretty crappy for the most part so you're going to have to play intelligently with that.

    If you need a Grass-type, I'd also recommend Roserade. Hits like a semi with Sludge Bomb/Giga Drain. For giggles you can also use Toxic Spikes if you want just to make like every battle significantly easier for the rest of your team since you'd probably need someone that would inflict status effects.

    Ok... lets see...

    Normal/Flying: covers Grass, Bug, Fighting and Ghost
    Electric/Ghost: covers Flying, Water, Psychic, Ghost and Normal
    Fire/Dark: covers Grass, Bug, Steel, Ice, Ghost and Psychic
    Ice: covers Flying, Grass, Dragon and Ground
    Water/Ground: covers Fire, Rock, Ground, Electric, Steel and Poison

    As has been mentioned, Roserade isn't a bad option with the Poison(notably Toxic Spikes) but with Fairy Types not being around, Poison kind of loses its luster save for inflicting Status conditions. At this point your team pretty much covers everything in the game except Dark Types. So I'd go with something Super Effective to them like Fighting or Bug. A Pokemon that ironically fits both roles is Heracross but that's too cliche of a pick. How about Yanmega? Its SpD leaves much to be desired but its pretty fast and has a solid SpA to boot. If you want a Fighting Type, then how about Toxicroak? You get the Poison possibility while also being able to kick Dark Type butt(along with Steel and Normal Types too).
     
    Still haven't decided on that last slot yet, but I think I'll get started today. Most of the party is filled out, so I can afford to decide on that last one a little later.

    Yeah sure, I'll keep it in mind for future playthoughs. Don't think I've ever used a Mismagius before so it'd be something new at least.

    Congrats on completing your first Challenge. But as Sydian said, we need to know more info. And that include what did you have for dinner and other stuff like the last movie you've watched.

    It worked out fine. Was easy enough iirc until I got to Lucian and Cynthia, where I had to start putting in some effort, and it was more because of the level gap and not the team composition (it gets pretty good coverage so I wasn't really feeling the need to get that 6th member to fix a hole). At the end of the game, movesets were:

    Staraptor (w/ Shell Bell): Close Combat, Fly, Aerial Ace, Brave Bird
    Rotom (w/ Magnet): Shock Wave, Shadow Ball, Discharge, Flash
    Whiscash: Surf, Amnesia, Earthquake, Mud Bomb
    Glaceon (w/ Quick Claw): Ice Beam, Last Resort, Icy Wind, Sand-Attack
    Houndoom: Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Faint Attack, Strength

    idk who I'd call the mvp(s) and last night i was an unhealthy hoe and just ate some Thin Mints ice cream lol
