Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - Danger above

Despair wasn't impressed by the Dark Pulse, neither hurt. His eyes gave a wicked glare at Ranger as he pounced at him and pushed him against the ground of Pokémon Square. He used a spell to temporarily immobilize the orange Flygon and drain his energy completely. He gave a smirk and then bolted towards Lu-Lu. He was held back by Melrose, who had somehow escaped her prison and sent him flying. She kept him in place with a spell and turned to the Medicham. "Lu-Lu, now! NOW!"

"Lu-Lu, now! NOW!" Lu-Lu once again prepared Psycho-cut as it seemed to be the most effective attack against this creature. Once again psychic energy built around her hand, and then she began running at full speed towards Despair. Using the full extent of her strength, she thrust her psycho-cut enhanced fingers into Despair.

Ranger tried to get away from Despair a ls the ghost lunge, but this time he wasn't fast enough. Despair pushed him to the ground and immobilized the flygon. Ranger struggled for a few seconds before he felt as if his life were being drained away. For the first time in a while he felt weak. He felt small. He felt powerless. Worst of all, he felt scared. He hadn't been scared since the flood had destroyed his village, and now nothing particularly important had happened to him and he was scared. The weakness he felt was unbearable, it was something that made him hate Despair even more, and hate fueled darkness.
It took several minutes, but Ranger finally brought himself to his feet. Now that Despair wasn't focusing on him, it wasn't hard for Ranger to sneak up behind him. The flygon was crouching low, all the while letting those horrible feelings fuel another dark pulse. His hatred for Despair was the most powerful one at the moment. The fact that Despair had threatened this town and all the people he loved only helped by adding rage to the mix.
As soon as Ranger was behind Despair, he rose to his full height, and praying that this stronger dark pulse would actually hurt Despair this time.
"You know, all lives are precious. That's why I'm glad you're already dead," that final word is what unleashed the dark pulse. The black aura again washed over everything, making the world seem darker than when that fog had arrived only minutes ago.
"You, Despair, were the exception to lives being precious," Ranger had a renewed energy now, and felt like nothing could stop him.
"Dragon Breath!" Ranger released the super heated draconic fire and watched with content as it washed over Despair.

"GAH!" Despair yelped as he was hit with the Dark Pulse. The Phycho Cut and the Dragonbreath weren't funny to him either. He had to think straight in order to achieve his goal. That was the moment he realized that Ranger, Lu-Lu and Melrose had cornered him. He warped towards the Kecleon Shop to avoid being caught and leapt up into the air. He turned around and as Melrose came into his vision, he focused on her. He gave a smirk and then dived down. Before Melrose could do anything, she was taken down and slammed to the ground. She felt something in her left-leg snap and shrieked out of pain. She then saw Despair come her way to give the death-blow and she flinched. This was the first time she was scared for real. This was the first time she could actually not do anything to stop her fate from becoming true. After realizing this, everything went black as she felt a fierce slam on the back of her head.

"You son of a..." Ranger didn't finish because his mouth filled with fire. Now he was really angry; Despair had just knocked out, or possibly even killed Melrose. The dragon breath swirled and crackled towards Despair, knocking the ghost flat. Ranger was on top of him in less than a second with extreme speed and the flygon bared his teeth again.
"I don't know if you know this, but dark pulse doesn't drain away dark emotions, it just uses them as a basis for strength," Ranger proceeded to attack with dark pulse after dark pulse at point blank range. This continued for several minutes until Ranger felt satisfied that Despair was too weak to do anything.
"I told you not to come back," Ranger attack with one last dragon breath and then moved over to Melrose. He picked up her body and listened for breathing; it was very faint, but there. Her back leg was broken and she was covered in cuts and gashes. He had no idea what to do, so all he did was nuzzle her unconscious form.
"Medicham, make sure he doesn't get back up. I need to get Melrose to a doctor."
It didn't take long for Ranger to find a doctor. There was nobody else there and the Blissey in charge immediately took Melrose from his arms and set her on a gurney. Ranger had no idea what to do now and felt awkward so he moved to a corner and sat there waiting to hear from the Blissey, but the battle had almost completely drained him and his eyes began to droop. It took only another few seconds for sleep to take hold.

Despair wasn't afraid of Ranger at all, but it did surprise him that he was able to get his strength back so soon. He just lied on the ground and waited for the perfect moment: the moment to kill Lu-Lu in front of him. He could clearly see that she was a great guard and he was itching for a big fight. His red eyes glared at the building Ranger and Melrose had just entered and when he saw nobody came out of the building, he made a sudden leap upwards.
"Oh, no, you don't!" Caitlin ran closer now that she felt strong enough to confront Despair after the sudden heat wave which had almost knocked her out cold. She jumped up and charged for a Solarbeam. She'd show Despair what she was made of and that he shouldn't have taken her hostage earlier. She was Agent Petal and only the agency knew about that secret identity. She knew that she didn't look or sound very tough but she was strong as hell. She fired her solarbeam, but because she had yelled just now Despair took a turn on her. He slammed her backwards but Caitlin recovered soon.

Lu-Lu was holding her guard, her focus at it's peak. The Bayleef, Lu-Lu sensed her name was Caitlin, attacked Despair with a solar beam. Lu-Lu knew that stopping Despair from entering the building was top priority. She sent another Psycho-Cut in despairs direction, and she followed suite with a bullet punch while Despair was focusing on Cailtlin. She hoped that her and Cailtlin trading Despair's attention would give Ranger enough time to recover and come back.

She was confident she could guard herself from him, but only Ranger could out-speed Despair when he tried to maneuver away.

Despair began to laugh as he disappeared in front of Lu-Lu, just when she was about to give him a taste of her Bullet Punch. He reappeared behind her and gave her a fierce blow on her head, to try and knock her unconscious. He was skilled in cunning tricks like this, but Caitlin, who had known him for several years, instantly knew what he was up to and pushed Lu-Lu out of the way. She could barely evade Despair's fist and when she gained ground again, she had to catch her breath. It was odd to her, because she had an outstanding condition for a Bayleef. What exactly did Despair do to her while she was out cold, imprisoned? Arceus knows.
Melrose, in the examination room and on a gurney, slowly gained consciousness again. She gazed up to the ceiling and frowned. What happened? She sat up straight to study her surroundings and found herself in some sort of hospital. She was confused. Did the others win the battle with Despair or was she actually dead? She pinched herself and yelped. Yep, she was awake. She saw the many injuries Despair had inflicted on her and groaned. It looked terrible. She tried to remember what happened before she went out cold and recalled a broken bone in her leg. She looked at her leg. It was swollen, black and blue. She panicked and looked around in haste. "H-Helloo?!" she yelled.

Joey looked in awe as the battle unfolded. Hit after hit just couldn't knock out Despair, and his opponents were surely not weaklings. Even the Flygon's dark pulse didn't seem like enough to take Despair down. Joey felt as though he was like the 5th wheel here. He wasn't nearly as big or as strong as the others. The Farfetch'd saw the Bayleef just managing to push Lu Lu out of the way from a strong punch. He had to find some way to help them out there, if anything to prove himself to be useful at least. "I am insane, I am insane, I am insane," Joey repeated to himself as he held a firm grip to the leek in his right wing. He dove down from the sky and built up his speed. His vision was distorted by motion blur as he reached his top speed, he pulled himself up to direct himself towards Despair. "This is crazy, this is crazy, this is crazy," he told himself as Despair got bigger and bigger the quicker he approached him. "It's all or nothing. Come on, aerial ace." He was fearing he'd just fly straight through Despair's spectral form as he continued straight towards him, or he'd just apparate himself to a new location, and he'd crash into a building right behind Despair. Here it went then. He prepared himself right before he would crash himself straight into Despair.

A split second before Joey would hit Despair, he turned around. He was unable to warp away in time and was hit hard. A crater was formed, smoke spiraled up, but Despair wasn't defeated. He was now REALLY angry, though, and held Joey up. With his firm, ghostly hands which he formed around Joey's neck, he tried to snap it. He really tried to break his neck or strangle him. Caitlin gave a furious growl and darted towards them. She used a spell to form two large wings out of her back, and she flew to her adversary with a tremendous speed. She hit him hard and so, Despair weakened his grasp, accidentally allowing Joey to escape. "Beat it, Farfetch'd," Caitlin hissed between clenched teeth. "Hide now or just beat it. Your life is at stake."
Despair leapt up again, making Caitlin squeak. "How the heck is he able to get up over and over again?!" she whispered to herself. With a few beats of her wings, she ascended to great altitude, and then flew down. She had to kill Despair for once and for all.

After being shoved out of the way, Lu-Lu quickly rejoined Caitlin. She could see that the bayleef was becoming tired, but she looked like she was in excellent shape for a pokemon that was not quite fully evolved. Lu-Lu didn't look to be in so hot shape herself right now, as she had taken two strikes to the head since this battle began, but she was trained to ignore pain and discomfort while growing up. However, no amount of training could prevent a pokemon from becoming tired, and Lu-Lu has to use all of her considerable strength in order to resist any of Despair's attacks. She feared that if the battle continued to go on like this for much longer, her movements would begin to become sloppy simply out of fatigue.

She scans the building for Melrose's and Ranger's auras, and it appears as if Melrose has awoken, though she is not in fighting condition. Lu-Lu is standing directly next to Caitlin, so she feels safe relaying the information directly to the bayleef's thoughts. Then the Bayleef uses her abilities to assist the Farfetch'd in getting away from Despair. Lu-Lu joins Joey's side. "Do not feel discouraged. Despair is more then a match for any single one of us. It's in working together we will defeat him. Are you alright?" She helps the Farfetch'd get to his feet. "We just need to wait for our window of opportunity."
The bayleef lands and Lu-Lu defends her for a brief moment before she takes off again.

Caitlin landed onto the ground again and healed herself with Synthesis. "Thank you, Lu-Lu," she smiled. She then took off again. "Keep him in that position!" she yelled downwards. Despair didn't like the idea of being beaten up by a simple Bayleef so decided to use a special spell: one that nobody could foresee. He used a spell, similiar to the attack Double Team, and spread all around town. Caitlin was now cornered and Despair smirked as he saw the grass-type sweat and tremble out of fear. He focused on Lu-Lu. 'Maybe,' he thought, 'I can gain posession over her body.'
And so he did. He spoke a few words and penetrated Lu-Lu. His spectral form flowed through her veins and took over her mind and free will. If nobody would see what was happening to the Medicham right now, this would work out in his advantage.

[wow, i take one little flight and miss nearly everything!?! yeesh, i feel for you DJYosh]

Leftie stared as the battle continued. He had blacked out again earlier and had now huddled in a corner near the wreckage, trying to heal his wounds. He would be in no shape to fight for at least 10 more minutes. He hoped that they would be able to fight until such a time when he could help them. He saw Caitlin healing herself and wished that he knew synthesis.
"Bugger!" he cried as a stray attack nearly blew up his hiding spot, "be a little more careful will ya?" he whispered to himself.

Melrose's call wakes up Ranger. She was standing up on the gurney, looking about. Ranger got up and walked over to the eevee.
"Hey," he said gently, "Lay back down. The blissey will be back in a minute," he gently nuzzled Melrose and yawned. He was feeling better after that short nap, but he was sore and got the feeling he wouldn't be doing any serious fighting.
"You were unconscious and I thought you were gonna die, so I brought you to this doctor," he said. The Blissey entered as he finished.
"Oh my! It's good to see you're awake sweetie, but you're seriously hurt. Please, don't move too much."

Despair looked at Leftie and him being singled out now. The Snivy looked frightened to him, but he didn't decide to come closer, now in Lu-Lu's body. That's blow his cover immediately and he wasn't waiting for something like that to happen. The Snivy's hiding spot wasn't the best ever, that was obvious, and although Despair was in another's body now and he knew that everything'd take a turn for the best now, in his opinion, he was kind of nervous.
Caitlin, in the meantime, managed to defeat the decoys that had her surrounded for a little while. She now turned to the other fake Despairs and fiercely hoped to find the real one. She wasn't able to see him, though. She knew that the true Despair had red eyes and the decoys had orange-coloured ones, but she was slightly colourblind and couldn't distinguish the true Despair from the other ghosts. She groaned flew higher and higher to get a better look at the situation.

Leftie noticed Lu-Lu looking at him in a strange way, as if analysing risks. She also seemed a little different, less concentrated. Leftie pondered why this could be when he remembered that she could have been possessed. This revelation came in conjunction with the completion of his healing. Wasting no time he drew his blade and equipped his shield and rushed towards Lu-Lu. He launched the strongest energy ball he could muster at her and, as it exploded, took a short rest. He had put too much power into the sphere and regretted it now, it should have been all in or nothing, not partial. he scolded himself and waited for the dust to clear while muttering under his breath "Kill Despair, keep Lu-Lu alive" over and over.

Lu-Lu had extremely sharp reflexes when she focused, but not even she could react to Despair's attack on her mind quickly enough to prevent it from happening. He quickly broke through the multitude of barriers she had placed on her mind and reached her core. She was suddenly launched into a veil of darkness, and she knew exactly what this meant. She was trapped, and any attempt to send a warning to the others would be lost in the darkness she was trapped in. Normally she tried to devoid herself of any emotion, but she was being lost to the darkness and this caused her some panic; despite all of her training in defense, Despair had little to no trouble invading her consciousness and taking over.

She flashed back to her days in her old village, the days of studying, learning and training. The day that the ghost and dark types attacked her village, of her anger, her evolution, and the shame she felt when she left. She felt that exact same shame again, her mind was trapped in the darkness and she had failed in preventing it. She had no idea what Despair was doing to the others in her body, but she feared he was causing mayhem and it was all due to her incompetence.

Despair began to laugh and snicker. He didn't even mind that his cover was blown right now. "Poor you, you can't fight me now. How bad would it be if you'd hurt Lu-Lu, right?" he smirked. Caitlin gave a fierce growl. "You can't do this!" she yelled in vain. Despair used Phycho Cut against her and before she could react, the Bayleef was down. How on earth could Despair fling attacks like that so fast? Caitlin thought about this for a second, but as she lied on the ground, she got the feeling that it was futile to try anything. The specter was way too strong. She forced her body to get up but she felt that she was going to collapse any moment out of fatigue.
Melrose looked Ranger in the eyes, and glanced to Blissey. "W-What happened? Where's the rest? Is Despair gone?!" She was incredibly frightened and even her facial expression told so. She was on the brink of bursting into tears out of frustration. And that's exactly what she did after a few moments of silence.

"MoltresbuggerDAMMIT" Leftie yelled. He had failed to do any sort of damage to the insanely strong Pokemon, but not willing to give in he cried out:
"What say you to game of Tennis?" he said and put all of his strength and even converted all but the amount he needed to survive of his vitality into the sphere and launched it with speed and ferocity that he had never used before.
"let's see you survive this you son of a- BUGGER!"

Joey obliged to the bigger Bayleef. He didn't need to be told twice as he quickly grabbed the leek that fell onto the ground and flew off right away. His attempt to take Despair out left him light-headed and he had difficult finding his stability in flight. What was he to do now? He looked around, but his wobbly vision made it hard for him to focus on anything. He made his decision to land on the roof of one of the buildings where he tried to catch his breath. The roof was flat, with small brick ridges at the outlines of the building, over which he could peek. The site of battle was very obvious to sight, the smoke and debris from the extremely powerful attacks that were exchanged were clearly visible. It was almost as if the area had turned into a full-blown warzone. He turned away from it and inspected himself. He had cuts and bruises all over himself. There was no doubt that he hurt himself more with his attack than he hurt Despair.
