Hey,
Thanks a heap for the kind words.
I definitely agree on the room for improvement. It was a first attempt and I was learning on the fly, for the most part. I really did it to create music and a world of atmosphere.
I think you're one the rare ones who understand the depth of what art can be. I see games like music or visual art. They're an exploration that can reflect our own experiences and all of the unique qualities of life.
Pretty much as you said, I tried to make it a vast world which could be explored. I love the idea of exploring new things, the 'unknown'. So, that's what I based the creation on.
If you haven't checked out my latest game, Pokemon - Wild Lands, you may enjoy that too. It is quite different in play style, but continues on the theme of vast exploration, atmosphere, and maturity. I like to think I ironed out some creases in it too.
Anway, thanks again!
I have finished the game! (As in: I received the message that the main content is finished). And it was satisfying to the very end :)
Here is a collection of bugs I encountered. I categorized them into three groups: 1. MAJOR -- this renders the game unplayable in some way; 2. MINOR -- these don't make the game unplayable, but might be easy to fix; 3. OTHER -- these don't make the game unplayble and might be hard to fix/are engine problems/just opinions and not actually bugs, so they may not be worth the effort to address.
Spoiler: spoiler all
MAJOR
The tunnel entrance for getting out of the Western Ocean area is not functional and the player cannot leave the area without Fly:
MINOR
Typo: Reven gym leader dialogue (find there way --> find their way)
Typo: Dominate (move) description (hit harding --> hard-hitting)
Typo: Skardian pokédex entry (it's --> its)
Formatting: Voltria pokédex entry is cut off
Formatting: Tauros pokédex entry is cut off
OTHER
Cutscene: First battle with Chaos Boss, pre-battle cutscene. If the player loses the battle and tries again, the cutscene plays again but is triggered too early (upon entering the level instead of walking to the top centre room).
Map: Able to clip through a cliff in Aquil Harbour (next to western entrance, two tiles directly to the south of the nearest NPC)
Interface: Celebi sighting information (accessed through the lab computer) also shows the player's money
Missing Cries: some cries are missing (e.g. Grattle, Ursaluna, Laprealm)
Item/Ability: The Pickup ability can give Escape Rope, which is now a key item and infinite; there is also an Escape Rope in Frozen Cavern (not sure if intentional)
Item/Ability: There are two U-Turn tms available (not sure if intentional)
Graphics: Battle animations sometimes get mixed up. For example: triggering held item behind a substitute causes the combatant to re-appear in place of the substitute, Brick Break inexplicably becomes Bubble in animation and sound sometimes, avoiding an attack using Fly/Dig sometimes makes the combatant reappear, combatants hit with Body Press remain forever flattened (probably not intended but this one was pretty funny)
Flavour: an NPC was "stocking up on Fresh Water" at the pokémart in Lava Overpass, but Fresh Water is unavailable for purchase. Would be cool if the wall actually had a vending machine!
Final thoughts:
1. I'm sure Julia (the little girl watching the champion battles) would grow up to be quite a trainer!
2. It's nice that Mewtwo gains Calm Mind and loses Terrify.
Personally, I did not go to catch Mew. I released the three legendaries from the PC and retired home, and that was a very satisfying ending for me :)
For Wild Lands: I will definitely check it out. Maybe after a little break -- but looking forward to unwrapping it in the future!
