I'm bringing this up because it was an actual topic of discussion today at work. I found myself defending the Pokemon community in regards to this issue. However, I'm curious as to what others are thinking about this topic, let me know what your take on it?

What issue, exactly? I'm afraid it's a little unclear what you mean.

Do you mean the controversy of going into places like cemeteries and museums just for Pokemon sake? If so, I don't really see an issue with it. While we are certainly there for the Pokemon, we are taking in the scenery too. I realize that's a little morbid when it comes to cemeteries, but many of them ARE tourist attractions anyway. I don't think there's anything wrong with catching Pokemon in either one.

I would say as long as you are not disrespecting the place in some way, then its okay. Now of course some people may say playing Pokemon is a way of disrespecting the place but I do not agree with that.

Now I do know that the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC has asked to be taken off the PokeStop list due to what I understand was disrespect by people entering the museum and being a disruption, which is bad as it is but even more so when you take into account what the museum is honoring, those who lost their lives in a horrible event in history. When it is something like that, I do agree that people shouldn't go in there for that reason, people should know better than to be a disruption. Now if they are going about their business as normal, taking in the sights and sounds of the place as well as play Pokemon in a peaceful manner without drawing unneeded attention to themselves, then I am all for playing Pokemon in those places. It's when you the cross the line into being a distraction and a disruption that I am not okay with it.

Apparently they've opened a service to ask for your residence to be removed from the areas in which Pokémon/PokéStops etc can appear so it looks like they've given in to the community here. I think that's a pretty good thing overall - the amount of people I've seen and heard running around graveyards looking for Gastly etc is quite ridiculous. Even on here several people have already posted about how they've been looking in places like that for Ghost-types and it just leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable haha. I'm happy that they're looking into removing these sensitive areas from the game as it just really isn't respectful (or at all necessary) to be using these areas in such a way given the significance of many of them.

We have a local cemetery which is really creepy at night, the gym in it is just out of range of the road so you actually have to go all the way inside the cemetery to fight the gym. I'm just hoping they move the gym slightly so you can fight it from the road.

As Squirrel says, there's now a service where you can request your area to be removed from the Gyms and PokeStops. No surprise it's a thing considering all the controversy regarding places like cemeteries and churches being PokeStop locations and people whose houses are also PokeStops and Gyms that are causing random "strangers" to be drawn to the house.

Cemeteries, museums and churches are places to pay respect so you can see why having them listed as Gyms and PokeStops is no surprise to the controversy surrounding the game.

There's nothing wrong with playing Pokemon Go in any public place, what matters is that you respect those around you and make sure not to disturb them. For example, in a museum, wandering around playing Go and talking with friends would be fine, but running around and shouting would bother other visitors. In a cemetery you have to be even more conscientious. You have to be quiet - no giggling or shouting - and give a wide berth to anyone who is standing at a grave mourning. I'd be pretty annoyed if I was trying to remember a loved one and some idiot with their phone out crashed into me.

I don't think it's about players being disrespectful for playing it so much as the game itself making light of whatever area you're playing it in. A player innocently trying to find Gastly in a graveyard with no ill intentions whatsoever is fine and they aren't being disrespectful just by walking around looking for Pokémon (although something like the famous Holocaust museum example is a bit worse as that isn't an area you can access without the intention of being there to commemorate the Holocaust), but the fact that the game is spawning these cute little fun Pokémon in these areas with no distinction is where I find an issue. It's essentially like putting up big bright posters saying "FREE ICE CREAM HERE YAY BE HAPPY :D" when you put a PokéStop somewhere as people will always flock to it to see what's around and I fail to see these big bright posters looking anything close to respectful next to an exhibit on the gas chambers haha.

There's a funeral home in our town and the sign out front is a Pokestop. It doesn't make any sense because it's literally just the sign with the name on it. I have to wonder what these people who submitted the places were thinking.

Awhile back a funeral was letting out and I was walking by playing Pokémon Go, I put my phone in my pocket because I felt it would be rude to even swipe. I was even on the opposite side of a 5 lane street.

I like the fact most Pokestops are at safe places as well as public places like churches, beaches. But honestly it's probably not a good idea to enter the Holocaust Museum with your only intention on getting 2-4 Great Balls and a Potion.
