Hey people, Brony here.
After recently playing through Mystery Dungeon: Red rescue team a bunch of times, I came up with a theory.
This theory may seem a little...Farfetch'd (hehe, see what I did there?) But bear with me and continue reading on.
As alot of you know, Gengar is portrayed as the villain character through Red and Blue Rescue Team...but what if he is actually a good guy, putting on an evil mask.
I made a few points while progressing through the game.
Warning: if you haven't played Red or Blue Rescue team, don't continue.
I hope you kept an open mind through reading this. Let me know your thoughts and opinions on my theory (: Later people of PC.

Spoiler:
Point 1:
Okay, so a little early on, Gengar and his "Rescue team" Steal job requests from your team. What if Gengar only did that to stop you from going into the dungeons to prevent any risk of danger, seeing as you are a newbie to the rescue team business.
Point 2:
When Caterpie comes to you to for help, Gengar steps in to try and take the job off you, again, possibly for the same reason I just mentioned.
Point 3:
When you find out about the Ninetales curse and the whole Gardevoir incident, Gengar goes to Pokemon square to spread the news. What if after the battle with Gengar and his team, in Sinister woods, he saw that you are tough for a new rescue team, so wanted to test your abilities by sending you out into the...Unown (heheheh, another Poke-Pun) and seeing how you cope with the extreme. Again, I know it may sound a bit of a ridiculous theory, but try to keep an open mind.
Point 4:
The night before you have to take on Sky Tower, Gengar tries to give you a nightmare, and make you feel horrible. What if, even though you are a tough team, he thought Rayquaza might be too big of a challenge for you, so tried to stop you from going.
Point 5:
After the fight with Rayquaza, you are laying in the middle of nowhere, in limbo, and Gengar comes along. Gengar begins to drag you off, but "gets lost" and leaves you. Gengar could have possibly done that to save you, and get your...soul? back into the real world.
