Pokemon Roleplay Discussion

Idea 'A', if I may call it that, seems very interesting. If you make that, I may join it. A question though, in this are you going to be roleplaying as an entire nation, cause that would be epic. Hard though.

Idea 'B' is even better than idea 'A'. I like the plot, and it would be the first pokemon roleplay I've seen where pokemon don't exist. This is brilliant, and original.

Idea 'C' is my favorite. It seems interesting, fun, and I leik sableye. I also 'leik' Darkrai so it would be hard for me to resist signing up as the character who found Darkrai's fancy gem thingy... I used thing again. Darn that word!

So the results stand at:
3- Idea A
2- Idea B
And- drumroll please -it's number 1- Idea C.

A) Roleplaying a whole nation sounds difficult. You'd need to be knowledgeable in a variety of fields, from military strategy to diplomacy. And, frankly, it's character interaction that draws me to roleplays. Would you have that in a roleplay where everyone plays countries rather than individuals?

B) It's Giant Mecha meets Pokemorphs! And...it's a sport? I dunno, not my thing. By the way, it takes millions of years for bodies to fossilize.

C) Okay...sounds like a classic 'Middle Earth' type setting, with super powerful artifacts, kingdoms, and an evil ruler that you must defeat. That could work. That "the gems only work with cooperation with its rival legendary's gem" seems a little, er, contrived. And just how did Cirnovet lose the Fables, anyway? If he needed them to take over the world, how can he stay in power without them?

I have, on another forum, or rather I was in one. It went good until the RP master started to get busy. They take more dedication than regular ones. It worked, but their were some really slow spots.

Well, firstly "A" will be full of character interaction, as you actually have to control an army into battle with an other roleplayer's army. Yes, it is hard, but you should take a strategic way of playing. Since you don't play as an individual, you don't really become that heartbroken when soldiers die in battle, as you don't know them personally.

"B" This is, as the other ones, a rough sketch. I can easily say in the official RP that pokemon were extinct for 20 million years. And, you use the fossil or amber as a kind of brain for the armor, gaining the attributes and power of the respective pokemon. And, Armors can evolve! That's awesome!

"C" As I said in B, this is also a rough scetch. Details will come as I make the roleplay. And no, the setting is just as "Middle Earth" as PMD, just that some Sableye took over the world. And making the gems work only when paired legendaries meet, is a way of forcing character interaction :D Or else, everyone may had made their ways into the castle themselves! (not saying it is that easy to enter the castle)
Oh, and Cirnovet has one Fable left... so he still rules his kingdom.

OK, just so you know, I am probably going to make all these RPs, just not in the same time. This was just to see which one comes first, depending on interest.
 
Things have been kind of slow around here and I'm itching to start my own roleplay. So I have a question for all of you - yes, even the lurkers. What's the first thing you look for in a roleplay?

Oh, the lurkers? I guess I'm in. :D

The first thing I look for personally in a RP is probably...hmmm...that's tough. Probably if the OP is neat and organized and isn't just a block of text with a set of rules and a SU attached. I like bold, underlined headings and paragraphs, personally. Secondly, I look at what...genre of RP it is (journey, PMD, Pokemorph, etc.). I'm not a fan of the PMD ones, or ones where you don't go through catching Pokemon. Then, I'll look at the starters and SU, and make sure they aren't too bad, and then I go through with reading the plot.

Off that topic, though, I am thinking of making a journey RP in a modern Sinnoh region, where the characters have special abilities, more commonly known as superpowers. Is anyone interested in me explaining?

Personally, I love trainer Rps, but only if there's a twist involved, such as not just going after badges, but maybe just focusing on a major event with different choices that can lead everyone to different fates. I love stuff like that. I'm not to keen on being a pokemon, and if pokemorphs are involved it still has to be a trainer type RP. Even when its a trainer RP I'm picky as heck. Sorry if I seem hard to please. Heh.

What I like to see in the beginning is a warning to people, like you need to post at least once or twice a week otherwise no go, because honestly the way RPs have been going is way too slow for my tastes. I'm not sure if its laziness or lack of interest, but its showing in all RPs at the moment. So warnings like that, and depending on the person, no reserving a pokemon. You get that SU up fast, and its not always first come first serve. Whoever has the better SU, because each post shouldn't be crappy and/or short, but a little lengthy and enjoyable post.

Oh, and Kingo! I would like to hear more about your RP. :)
 
What's the first thing you look for in a roleplay?
What I personally look for are the following (in no particular order):

1. Decent grammar and spelling: I do not mind the occasional typo or sentence fragment, however of the opening post is filled to the eyeballs with syntax errors, I have to go away. It not only hurts to look at, but unfortunately gives me some insight as to what I'll see from the OP's poster in the rp itself.

1b. Quality of the posts: both the OP and the actual IC-posts have to look decent. This kind of falls into the whole scope of grammar and spelling, but if I'm staring at a wall of text for the OP.... ow. No. I have bad eyesight as it stands; I do not need to strain my eyes more trying to decipher what's going down in this roleplay.

2. The DM/Original Poster has an open mind: a little lei way and variation from the standard "new trainer" or "usual starting Pokemon" is lovely to see. I'd like to be allowed to play a Gastly as my character's starter (or, if this is a Veteran-Trainer roleplay, have that starter have been a Gastly at some point-- see where I'm going here?) I don't want to be told "no u can not use gastly it is not an original starter!!".

If you have a good reason to tell me "no", however, then I don't frowny-face at you. *nodnod* Now, am I saying that folks can pull Mew outta their bums for a team member? No! Just... y'know, if you see someone apply a character and a team that has slight variation from the norm to give it a little thought and consideration before you go ahead and a decline them.

3. Decent rp plot: this ought to be obvious, yes, but when I consider joining an rp, I want to know that the plot I plan to throw my character into is well thoughtout, enriching, and won't go down in flames due to sudden disinterest.

Really? Awesome. :) Okay, so these people with abilities are called Supremes, and at around twenty to thirty years before the RP takes place, these people were everything- the most owerful and looked-up to people not only in Sinnoh but the whole world. Especially after the Supremes, kind of like superheroes, saved the day-big time. A conflict between the three Regi's almost caused Mt. Coronet to fall apart, but the Supreme's saved the day. Ten years later, however, a conflict at the same spot arose again, and this time, the Supremes were too late. over a million people and Pokemon died, and 2/3 of Mt.Coronet crumbled. The president banned the Supremes from travelling out into the world, and they were all either held by the government, or forced to stay in one place. However, Pokeman, the head Supreme, escaped from his prison one night, and asked his two main colleagues to collect all of the reamining Supremes they could get a hold of, and bring them to their headquarters, which was hidden behind Pal Park.

Ten years after being banned, the president lifted the ban, and is holding an event in Sandgem for any remaining Supremes that want to go on a journey, to get a license and have papers signed and stuff. However, they are not providing Pokemon. During the ten years, Supremes were brought to the Pal Park base and raised by higher-ranking Supremes.

IN this RP, you are either a young Supreme who is embarking on his journey after being stuck in Pal Park for ten or so years, or someone who for some reason does NOT like the ban lifting, and wants to do something to stop them.

Sound good? :D
 
What's the first thing you look for in a roleplay?

I suppose, as already mentioned, such things as a nice, organized OP post, as well as a decent story and an interesting setting is key to catching the interest of RP'ers. I also like to see them do something new and interesting, insetad of just going with the same old, same old. That's just about it. I'd have loved to write a little more, but it's tough to explain really. I just look at the RP, see if I can get a good idea, and join if I feel like it. Of course, a good setting and story helps on that XD

I'm actually working on an RP myself as well with some help by Zeo, though it won't be posted here, but instead have its own forum, and will be alot bigger and structured... But Rabbit, tell me when/if you start your RP, I'd love to take a look at it and possibly join ^^ I need to get back in the game xD

It can't be a trainer RP. I have a lot of trouble creating a sign up for a trainer.

So, I take it that catching Pokemon is most important to you? Would you be interested in a RP if it focused on Pokemon battling rather than catching?

Do you prefer trainer RPs where the trainer can be any kind of OC, or RPs where the trainers are all newbies receiving their first Pokemon?

Very good point about the warning, I think. Posting often is key to keeping a roleplay alive. XD Unfortunately it can be difficult, if not impossible, to kick players out when they've gone inactive in the middle of the plot!

:o What's it gonna be about? I would totally be interested in that. I've been looking for a forum devoted to Pokemon RPs for a while, but 99% are completely inactive. Don't hold your breath about whatever I'm working on - it's devoid of any shape or focus at the moment. XD
 
Rabbit~ Well, as long as it is organized, and you aren't battling 24/7, I suppose it wouldn't be too much of a problem. I actually meant a journey by that, but yeah, :)
 
Well... Basically it's what people make it... It's based in a Region called Worah(which was actually just a random word I said out of boredom once while talking to Zeo on MSN XD)... Everyone will start out as a beginning trainer, earning their licence and first Pokémon(so far there is about 23 different starter Pokémon, to create diversity and freedom of choice)... From there, the player can basically do what they want...

They could, for example, take the normal path of a trainer, wanting to compete in the Regional Pokémon League, which may give them the chance of taking the title of Champion or become a member of the Elite four... Though they can go further then that and aspire to compete in the "Path of the Elite" Championship, which requires it's contestants to get hold of ALL badges in the region(which is a total of 16... twice the number required for the League)... Though... You could also join a Gym, maybe even take over as its head, competing with the other Gyms for the title of "strongest"... You can also join the Regions main crime syndicate(details still being worked on), or whatever else you want... In a way, the players BECOME the story, as they help shape the world around them in different ways.

There'll also be some features that would be hard to make work on a site like this, where RP's have only one thread, but basically, your Pokémon will have levels and stats, to give an image of power, and even your Trainer get's experience, which can be used to make them specialized, such as increasing their knowlegde of Pokémon breeding, allowing them to get better results from this.

There's still alot to do before it's ready for opening, but yeah. Right now I'm making some graphics, just because I like to do that, such as VS sprites for the various Gym Leaders by recoloring, mixing and, to some extend, freestyling on the original ones from the games. I actually managed to turn Aaron into a girl XD

Hm, I've never submitted an idea her before, maybe I ought to?

But first, what strikes me most in a rp.

I, personally, like journey roleplays simply because of the character development, but that is not to say that I don't like other roleplays. I have a soft spit in my heart for historical, should I see that than I am most likely to sign up.

To me, layout is the key. I have a patience of 0, which means you have to captivated my attention. Layout will do that for you, make things clean and perhaps colour coded and my OCD brain will thank you by reading it. Also, it has to be interesting, if it's a boring and a(digitally) monotone telling of something, than I am most likely to click the big red X on top of the screen. I am someone who glances something over for a second before I decide to go on reading. I don't like PMD or Pokemorph roleplays, so those get X-ed right away. The whole Crime Syndicate thing is overdone in my mind as well and will most likely receive the X as well.

Of course the started Pokemon are important was well. I am one who likes choices. I like to have a couple of creatures in front of me to choose from, I don't like to have to chose myself unless I can chose a full team right away. I like the challenge of doing with what I get to do, it's a challenge, and Swan likes challenges.

But off to the actual idea. I was thinking of something historical, for that is what pulls my heart strings. My thoughts immediately go out to Ancient Rome, I have most of it figured out already but I don't want to spoil too much!
Basically you will be a slave in a world where Pokemon don't have such a heavy roll (Nor will get called Pokemon), and they are heavily taxed as well. Only the rich own a domesticated one, or the soldiers and gladiators own ones for battle. Now you have to understand that creatures such as Gabite or Charizard won't really come into this, no one would have them as a domestic animal and they are too temperamental for the battlefield. They might be used in gladiator matches, but that's it.

You will play a slave whose master is in with some plot (Spooooilers) and commands you to take the Emperors offer to become a gladiator. The Emperor has offered to give slaves a chance of a better life should they do well in the arena, and you will get a Pokemon to help you. Should you do well then the Emperor would offer you a place to work on the Palatine. Should you not do well... you would most likely die.

I am not sure yet if I want the people to fight alongside the Pokemon. These aren't like ordinary Gladiator battles, the slaves will be entirely unprepared with little to no fighting experience, so it might be better to have the creatures fight for them.

Any thoughts?
 
That actually sounds really interesting ^^ Only problem might be that you're so restricted(I mean, you're a slave... what choices can you really make?), but I'd consider it nevertheless

Again the association of journey RPs with starter Pokemon... Would you be completely uninterested in a journey RP where your character is an experienced trainer, or is that just the kind of journey RP you're most familiar with?

Your idea sounds very interesting. Would it be like a tournament RP, but with a different style of battling, and higher risks? The only problem I can see is that players might be upset at their characters' sudden death. :P

Sounds like a MMORPG, but in written format. I'm not really a fan of text-based games, though. I'd prefer something with more plot and less leveling. :|

It's not a tournament roleplay, basically you will get given a position on the Palatine because you will win the Emperor's tournament and things go down from there on xD Seriously, I have so many plot twists and things planned.

Getsumei, the reason why you are a slave is so that you won't have any choices, if that makes sense. You won't be in the position to argue when someone tells you something, but you're safer than the others are. The period I am thinking of carries a great amount of death and a crazy Emperor (Yes, it will be an actual Emperor that this is about, not just an invention of mine).

And about the Journey roleplay, I just like starting off with a clean slate. I usually only participate in full-team roleplays when it has an interesting plot, like the Gladiator Prison :)
 
Trust me, I can't stand MMORPG's XD but well, it IS an RPG... And thus basically a game... But the stats and stuff are really just to give a feel of the different Pokémons' power... I know it may sound like it's all about the leveling, but it's not... But the story would be mostly based on what people decide to do, how they decide to use their character, and what paths they wish to take.

Then, every now and then, we'll make events, which people can take part in... But generally, the characters create their own stories. And from that, we award them with EXP, depending on the quality and creativity. I've been playing this sort of RP for about 4 years now, though that was based on Naruto, and it's not just mindless MMORPG style grinding... The characters and the story is still the most important... The numbers are all just for the technical parts where people need to get a general image of each others' level of power.

And to Swan, yes, I understand completely, and I didn't say it was bad... It's just that, it could cause a problem, but if people can keep themselves occupied with what little they have, and you can keep throwing in new stuff, it'll work out just fine ^^
